Several people fell into silence at the same time. Such a cruel method of suicide was indeed rare, almost unheard of. The cell was sealed, making it impossible for anyone to enter and commit murder. Could it really be suicide?
"Captain Xing, can we go to the scene?" Chu Feifan suddenly said.
"Sure!"
The prison still reeked of blood, with uncleaned stains all over the floor, now turned black and horrifying to behold.
"It looks like he must have suffered greatly before he died. But why are there drag marks? And why do they look so strange?"
Chu Feifan pointed to two long bloodstains, one of which was at least two meters long.
"These aren't drag marks; they're from knee friction," Captain Xing said.
"So that means he must have knelt on the ground. But that's strange—if he wanted to commit suicide, why would he kneel down and leave such a long blood trail?"
"Therefore, it's obvious this isn't a suicide; we just don't have evidence yet of who killed him. The only footprints and fingerprints at the scene belong to him."
"This is too bizarre," Zuo Yi also found it hard to believe.
Suddenly, Chu Feifan spotted something. He slowly walked toward the bed and noticed a small yellow object peeking out from under one of the bed legs. He bent down, lifted the bed leg, and pulled out a cigarette butt.
"He used to smoke?" He handed the cigarette butt to Captain Xing.
Captain Xing took it, smelled it, and then instructed an officer to send it for testing.
"Could it be that Qin Yu sent him cigarettes?" Zuo Yi mumbled.
"Yeah! She visited him that day. Is there something wrong with the cigarettes?"
"But the guard didn't see her bring anything in," a Junior Officer said.
"Maybe she threw away the cigarette box and just brought a few cigarettes inside. If she hid them, it would be hard to find," Chu Feifan said.
"Did you find any cigarettes on Hao Hongtao?"
Captain Xing shook his head; he had nothing on him when he died.
"That's strange."
The smell of blood in the cell was overwhelming. After failing to find more clues, they stepped out.
At the same time, Su Jin'er and Cheng Xiaoying were sitting on the bed anxiously waiting for news, with Cheng Xiaoying's face stained with tears. Even now, she couldn't believe that the boy she had liked for years was dead.
"Perhaps this is really karma!" she sobbed. "You know? After I found out he insulted Zhuo Man at Qin Yu's instigation, I hated him. I even wanted to kill him. How can love drive someone to such madness? What value does that love have?"
Su Jin'er fell silent. There are indeed people in this world who kill in the name of "love." Some love to the extreme, to madness, losing their reason, believing that "it is better to be shattered as jade than to remain whole as tile." Such love is terrifying. If given a choice, she would rather have never loved than fall for someone with such thoughts.
She had heard from classmates about a boy who killed his girlfriend and her family because her parents opposed their marriage. Is that really love?
Just thinking about it sent chills down her spine; such love is truly better off not existing.
Cheng Xiaoying was still trembling in her arms, resembling a child who had lost a beloved toy. Su Jin'er held her shoulder tightly.
"Jin'er, do you love Chu Feifan?" Cheng Xiaoying suddenly looked up, tears in her eyes as she asked Su Jin'er.
Su Jin'er was taken aback; she hadn't expected that question.
"Actually, I knew he liked me from the beginning, but at that time I didn't plan to accept him because I didn't understand him. However, later I realized I couldn't forget him; his face would suddenly appear in my mind unexpectedly. At that moment, I knew I had started to like him. But even then, I didn't want to agree to him because I didn't know him well enough, and the love I wanted had to be pure."
"What kind of love is pure?"
She brought up this question to Su Jin'er, who wasn't quite sure what she meant by having no impurities, but still smiled and said, "No betrayal."
Cheng Xiaoying widened her eyes and said, "Is that all? Heh, you know? I always thought that loving someone just meant they had to be good. I never expected them to love me back, so if Hong Tao likes Qin Yu, then so be it! I don't care. But he loves her so much that he's willing to do things against his conscience. At that moment, I really wanted to kill him." Tears streamed down Cheng Xiaoying's face.
Su Jin'er felt a complex mix of emotions. She didn't know how to express herself; loving someone who doesn't love you back is a painful experience. And the one shedding tears had loved for several years without complaint. If it were her, she definitely couldn't do that. She had always been afraid to open her heart to love someone because she feared getting hurt. She admitted to being weak, at least when it came to love.
Suddenly, she really wanted to see Chu Feifan. Although he might have betrayed her in the past, they had gone through life and death together.
"Actually, I've heard a bit about your situation," Cheng Xiaoying said as she wiped away her tears.
Su Jin'er tilted her head, waiting for her to continue.
"I heard that you cracked the case involving Xiao Mei and even caught the Killer."
Cheng Xiaoying's words reminded her once again of the incident that had cost her the best friend she could never forget.
"I'm sorry, did I bring up something sad?"
Su Jin'er's face turned pale; she smiled and shook her head, though she knew her smile must look stiff.
Cheng Xiaoying fell silent as well. The two sat quietly, lost in their own thoughts.
At this moment, it was almost eleven o'clock. The nurse would probably come by soon to bring them food. After the last incident, that nurse no longer dared approach Cheng Xiaoying; she would just place the food by Su Jin'er's bedside and wait for her to eat on her own. This time would likely be the same!
About eight hours later, footsteps echoed outside the door. Su Jin'er jumped onto her bed and sat there dazedly. This time she didn't look out the window but instead stared at her fingers, which were intertwined.
However, the people who entered were not nurses but Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi, each carrying two lunch boxes.
"Why are you two here?" Su Jin'er asked in surprise when she saw that the nurse hadn't followed them in.
"Yeah! That nurse looked like she really didn't want to come in, so we took care of it."
Cheng Xiaoying stuck out her tongue apologetically; she knew the nurse didn't want to come in because she was afraid of hearing her screams.
A few people sat down together to eat, and no one spoke.
Su Jin'er chewed slowly on her rice, seeming like she had something to say.
After a while, she finally couldn't hold back: "Um, did Hongmei's family come to the school?"
Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi were both taken aback. They had been avoiding mentioning this matter, and now that she brought it up herself, they had no choice but to respond.
"Her parents came and took her belongings because she was the only child in the family. Now that she has suddenly died, her mother almost fainted from crying. They even caused a scene at the police station, saying that if they didn't catch the killer, they would smash the police station and demand that everyone pay for their daughter's death."
Su Jin'er trembled. Although she already knew this would be the outcome, hearing it for real still made her throat feel tight and tears welled up in her eyes. Recently, she had been trying hard to think about what happened that night, but all she remembered was throwing a rock at that head. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't recall why it was Hongmei's head. She felt like a murderer; how could she hide like a turtle in a mental hospital, evading the law?
Tears fell into her bowl, disappearing into the white rice.
"I'm sorry; I shouldn't have said that." Chu Feifan looked at her tears with a face full of guilt.
"It's fine. I just feel like I shouldn't be hiding here; after all, I killed Hongmei."
Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi stared at her in shock. They hadn't expected her to admit that she was the one who killed her.
"You remember what happened that night?" Zuo Yi asked.
Su Jin'er shook her head. "I still remember that I smashed a head, but I don't know how it turned into Ruan Hongmei's head. Maybe I really saw it wrong and accidentally killed her."
"Jin'er, you..." Chu Feifan didn't know what to say. Su Jin'er admitted to murder; she would definitely go to prison, and it could even be a death sentence. He looked at her with deep sadness.
Su Jin'er said with a bitter smile, "I can't keep evading the law just because I'm afraid of death. It's only natural that a life is paid for a life. I'm grateful that Captain Xing believes I didn't kill anyone."
"But have you considered that this might all be a trap set by the Killer? He wants you to take the blame for him. Are you really willing to die for him? He has killed so many people; do you intend to bear that responsibility?"
"What can I do? I can't think of any way to clear my name."
Su Jin'er was not someone who would easily give up, but she had been tormented by Ruan Hongmei's death. She didn't know if she was the one who had killed her, but she was very clear that if she hadn't let her come out that night, she wouldn't have died. Yet, she had indirectly caused her death.
"Jin'er, trust me, I will find evidence to prove that you didn't kill her." Chu Feifan's gaze was firm, which made Su Jin'er believe he could do it, but she no longer believed in herself.
Zuo Yi suddenly lowered his head and said, "Maybe we've all overlooked something."
His sudden remark surprised them all.
"What? You need to say it quickly," Chu Feifan asked eagerly.
"Didn't you notice something strange? When Ruan Hongmei's parents came, they seemed not to recognize me at all. Don't forget, Ruan Hongmei is my betrothed!"
Chu Feifan recalled that when her parents came that day, they didn't even glance at Zuo Yi. Even in their sorrow, they should have exchanged a few words with him since they were good friends with Zuo Yi's father.
