Su Jin'er's hand trembled slightly as she held the mirror, her face pale. This realization filled her with terror, and in a fluster, she removed the bracelet from her wrist and tossed it onto the bed.
She began to doubt Zhuang Lingtian's motives for giving her the bracelet. Although he claimed he thought it looked nice, one could never truly know what was in another's heart.
Despite these thoughts, Su Jin'er decided to find out what Zhuang Lingtian's true intentions were.
Fortunately, she had discovered this in time, and she let out a slow breath of relief.
Cheng Xiaoying remained hidden in the corner, watching Su Jin'er warily.
"I'm sorry for scaring you," Su Jin'er said, feeling a bit embarrassed; her earlier reaction had indeed been excessive.
Cheng Xiaoying continued to hug her legs tightly, watching her with caution, constantly retreating as if trying to sink into the wall behind her.
Su Jin'er picked up the bracelet from the bed and placed it in the drawer before sitting on the bed with her legs hugged close.
"I know you're very scared. Actually, I'm scared too, you know? I can't even sleep! Every time I close my eyes, I dream about what happened that night. All I remember is seeing a green-skinned head flying towards me, and then it opened its mouth and bit my arm. I was terrified and hit it with a rock, but when I looked closely, I realized I wasn't hitting that head but Hongmei's skull. Do you know what that kind of horror feels like?"
"Green... green..." Cheng Xiaoying suddenly murmured softly.
"What did you say?"
"Green... I saw a green face." Cheng Xiaoying's expression shifted from alertness to panic as she glanced around frantically, as if something might pounce on her at any moment.
Su Jin'er was taken aback. Could it be that Cheng Xiaoying had also seen that green face?
She sat on Cheng Xiaoying's bed and asked, "Did you see a green face?"
Cheng Xiaoying nodded, her gaze unfocused as she kept mumbling: "Green."
Su Jin'er looked at her in surprise. The fact that she nodded meant she could understand what was being said. That meant Su Jin'er could ask who had tied her up in the dormitory.
"Xiaoying, don't be afraid. There won't be any green faces here. Can you tell me who tied you up in the dormitory?"
As soon as Su Jin'er finished speaking, Cheng Xiaoying's eyes widened in terror, and her breathing became rapid, resembling an asthma attack.
Su Jin'er was startled by her sudden action. She patted her back and said, "I'm sorry, I was too anxious. It's okay, you don't have to answer me."
However, Cheng Xiaoying only took a moment to catch her breath before returning to normal. Still, her face remained pale as she haltingly recounted what had happened that night.
It turned out that after they took her to Lin Yazhi, she regained some awareness but remained very timid. Any little sound would frighten her terribly. Yet, she was still quite clear-headed; Lu Lili had been taking care of her, while she was on guard against everyone else. She only trusted Lu Lili. That night, Lu Lili said she was tired and wanted to sleep early, so she went to bed around eight o'clock. However, Cheng Xiaoying couldn't fall asleep. She felt uneasy as if something was about to happen, so she stayed awake until eleven o'clock. Out of fear, she covered her head with the blanket, but the air inside was limited. Soon, she felt suffocated and uncovered her eyes, nose, and mouth. At that moment, she saw a terrifying scene.
A woman in white floated around the dormitory as if searching for something. Cheng Xiaoying was terrified and trembled under the blanket, not even realizing her lips were bleeding from biting them. The woman searched the room for a long time but seemed unable to find what she wanted and then decided to leave.
Naturally, Cheng Xiaoying was shaking all over with fear as she nervously watched the White-Clad Woman walk toward the door. She let out a slow breath of relief; however, the woman suddenly floated back and stood right beside Cheng Xiaoying's bed. She was so frightened that she almost jumped up but knew that if she did, it might lead to her demise. She thought that since the lights were off in the room and she was hiding under the blanket, the woman shouldn't be able to see that she was awake. So she bravely looked at what the woman intended to do next and saw a green face with a mouth stretching almost to her ears, blood continuously dripping from the corners of her mouth. She could even smell the nauseating scent of blood. The woman stood by her bed for a moment before giving a sinister smile and floating toward the door to leave.
Cheng Xiaoying watched her leave but still dared not emerge from under the blanket; she could only gasp for air with her mouth wide open as the faint smell of blood lingered in the air. At this moment, she noticed that she was drenched in sweat, and her pajamas clung uncomfortably to her skin. So she thought about getting up to wash herself and check on Lu Lili. However, just as this thought crossed her mind, drowsiness washed over her; she felt completely drained of energy and couldn't even open her eyelids before quickly falling asleep.
Afterward, she had a long dream in which the woman in white with a green face kept appearing, always smiling sinisterly at her. It was the same dream repeating over and over again, which terrified her but left her unable to wake up from it.
It wasn't until Chu Feifan and others opened the door that she finally woke up. However, due to the dream's influence, she lost her composure again; anyone who approached would make her scream.
After hearing her words, Su Jin'er thought that the woman in white might be the one she had seen too; however, she didn't remember the face being green. But there was something very important in Xiaoying's words: people usually say ghosts are formless and can pass through walls. Yet Xiaoying mentioned that the woman floated out through the door. Su Jin'er felt that this white-clad green-faced woman must be someone in disguise—most likely Lu Lili.
But why would she pretend to be a ghost?
And who was that green face peering through the window? How did it manage to get there?
Cheng Xiaoying watched Su Jin'er fall into deep thought and slowly moved her body to say, "Jin'er, can I trust you?"
Su Jin'er turned back to look at her; Cheng Xiaoying's sudden recovery surprised her. However, instead of answering directly, she countered with a question: "Can I trust you?"
Cheng Xiaoying paused at Su Jin'er's counter-question before forcing a smile and saying awkwardly, "I'm telling you the truth."
"Then why are you pretending to be crazy?"
She began to doubt Dr. Gao now; he claimed that she was genuinely insane but it seemed he had been lying.
Seeing Su Jin'er's disbelieving gaze made Cheng Xiaoying sigh and say, "Actually, I'm not pretending; I really went crazy. It's just that when Dr. Gao took me for an examination earlier, he found out I wasn't actually mentally ill—I just hadn't completely woken up from that dream yet. So he treated me on the side but I'm still very scared; that's why I asked Dr. Gao to keep it a secret for me at first. He didn't agree initially but I begged him until he reluctantly complied."
"Then why did you suddenly let me know you're better now?"
"Because I saw your sincerity, I know you won't harm me. At least you told me the truth."
Su Jin'er raised her head to look into her eyes. Cheng Xiaoying did not avoid her gaze. Generally, when people lie, they subconsciously avoid eye contact, so Su Jin'er could be sure that she was not lying.
Su Jin'er smiled and said, "I believe you, and you can believe me too."
Cheng Xiaoying sighed in relief, then lowered her head and said sadly, "I don't know if there are ghosts in this world, but that night I really saw Zhuo Man. She was upside down, just like in that story. Then Xiangxiang died; she was scared to death by Zhuo Man's ghost, and I fainted too. Jin'er, are there really ghosts in this world?"
Xiaoying's question left Su Jin'er stunned. She didn't know how to respond. If it were before, she would have definitely said no, but now she wasn't sure because she had clearly seen the spirit of that baby at her grandmother's house.
"Heh heh, have you also started to doubt that there are no ghosts in this world?" Cheng Xiaoying's laughter was somewhat desolate, making Su Jin'er feel sad.
"Actually, that night, I thought I would be the one to die."
"Why?"
Su Jin'er suddenly recalled the tragic cry on the day Zhuo Xiaoman died.
