Ruan Hongmei looked out the window again, still seeing nothing.
She frowned and said, "How is that possible? We're on the fourth floor!"
Ruan Hongmei's words startled Su Jin'er. They were indeed on the fourth floor, so it was impossible for anyone to be crouching on the windowsill. What about that distorted face she saw earlier? Was it just her imagination? However, the feeling of being watched couldn't be fake; it meant someone was definitely staring at her, but she wasn't sure if that person was the one with the distorted face outside.
She turned around again, and this time, the feeling of being watched disappeared, along with her fear.
Was it really just an illusion?
She found it hard to believe.
Turning on the faucet, the cold water stimulated her skin, making her shiver involuntarily. Wasn't this water a bit too cold? Although the weather wasn't that hot yet, it shouldn't be this chilly! It could even be described as bone-chilling.
So much had happened recently that she found it hard to accept. The last case had just concluded, and she thought such terrifying events wouldn't occur again. Unexpectedly, someone jumped off a building right after. The connection was too tight!
She wondered if that eerie knocking sound and the strange White-Clad Girl would appear again tonight.
Holding the already cleaned bowl, she walked out of the bathroom. Ruan Hongmei was already lying in bed reading.
"What are you reading?"
"A book!"
Su Jin'er shot her a glare and said, "I know you're reading a book; I'm asking what book."
"Oh! Right."
She knew Ruan Hongmei wasn't studying.
"It's a horror book." Ruan Hongmei suddenly sat up straight and looked at Su Jin'er with a strange expression. "The book is called 'Midnight Knocking Sound.'"
Su Jin'er couldn't help but shiver. "You really have a lot of leisure time."
"Hehe!" Ruan Hongmei chuckled twice and continued reading.
After the scare earlier, Su Jin'er's heart was still racing, and her eyes kept darting toward the balcony, as if a twisted, distorted face could appear at any moment.
After staring at the window for a while and realizing that nothing would show up, she lay down. However, because she had napped too much in the afternoon, she felt wide awake now, staring at the ceiling.
The sound of pages turning from Ruan Hongmei's bed provided her with some comfort. For some reason, she suddenly felt like she had become very timid.
Suddenly, she sat up and opened the small bottle her grandmother had given her from her backpack.
A foul odor wafted out immediately, almost making her gag.
"Wow! What is this awful smell?" Ruan Hongmei tossed aside the book in her hand, pinching her nose with one hand while fanning her face with the other.
"I don't know either; my grandmother gave it to me to get rid of this mark." As she spoke, she got out of bed and took a small mirror from the drawer, then used a cotton swab to apply the ointment to her face.
Once applied, her originally burning skin felt a bit cool, instantly providing much relief. Strangely enough, after putting it on her face, the foul smell seemed less intense.
"How does it feel?"
"Very cool and comfortable."
Ruan Hongmei frowned and said with a grimace, "What if when the red mark on your face disappears, that pungent smell lingers?"
"How could that be? I'd rather keep this red mark on my face for life," she replied as she pulled the blanket over herself and lay back down.
"Alright! Forget I said anything." She picked up her book and continued reading.
Just as Su Jin'er had just laid down, she felt that unsettling sensation of being watched again. She looked out the window in fear, but it was pitch black outside, with nothing to be seen.
Yet, the feeling of being observed persisted.
Could someone have installed a camera in the dorm room?
The thought sent a shiver down her spine.
She rolled out of bed and began searching the room. Nowadays, pinhole cameras are nearly invisible to the naked eye; one would need special equipment to detect them. However, it was already midnight, and finding such equipment was impossible. Although she knew she probably wouldn't find anything, she decided to give it a try for her own peace of mind.
Su Jin'er glanced at Ruan Hongmei, who was looking at her in confusion. Since there were only the two of them in the dorm, Ruan Hongmei was only wearing her pajamas, which made her feel exposed.
"Hey, Hongmei, why don't you put on something else?"
"Why? What are you looking for?"
"I've had this feeling of being watched. Since there can't be anyone outside the window, I suspect someone might have installed a camera in our dorm."
"No way!" Ruan Hongmei immediately dove under the covers. After some rustling, she emerged wearing a pajama top and got out of bed to help search.
They turned the dorm upside down but found no camera. Both of them sat on the bed feeling defeated.
Ruan Hongmei casually grabbed a light yellow teddy bear from the bed and hugged it as she walked over to Su Jin'er. "Are you being too sensitive? How could there be a camera? The keys to our dorm are only with you, me, and the administrator. How could anyone else get in?"
Su Jin'er thought about it and realized Ruan Hongmei had a point. Moreover, that unsettling feeling had faded away; perhaps she really was just too tired!
Ruan Hongmei patted her shoulder and said, "Let's just go to sleep! It's already 11:20 PM; the lights will go out soon."
With that, she crawled back into her blanket and tucked her book under her pillow.
Su Jin'er lay back down on the bed, but she couldn't fall asleep. It felt as if something heavy was pressing on her heart, making her uncomfortable. She sighed softly, yet the weight in her chest continued to make it hard for her to breathe.
The lights went out!
After a long while, she still hadn't heard Ruan Hongmei's steady breathing. She probably wasn't asleep either!
Turning over and resting her hand under her head, she asked, "Hongmei, are you asleep?"
Then she heard the sound of rustling as Ruan Hongmei turned over. "Not yet. I don't know why, but I feel like the air is suffocating, as if there's a stone on my chest. It's really uncomfortable."
"Me too, I feel so sad." Su Jin'er patted her chest and took a deep breath, trying to expel the suffocating feeling.
However, this method seemed ineffective; the anxiety in her heart remained.
"Why is this happening? Is it because the air in the dormitory isn't circulating?" Ruan Hongmei's voice trembled slightly.
Hearing her words, Su Jin'er turned her gaze toward the window on the balcony. They had left the balcony door open to ensure good airflow in the dormitory, but upon looking, she was immediately startled and broke out in a cold sweat.
On the window was a distorted face that appeared pressed against it again. Even more terrifying was that she could see it was a woman's face with green skin and wide-open eyes. Strangely enough, against the dark sky, that face seemed to glow.
"Hongmei, look at the window," Su Jin'er's voice trembled and lost its tone.
Ruan Hongmei also turned to look at the window. She didn't understand why Su Jin'er kept saying there was someone at the window today, and now that she looked, she too was terrified and trembling.
"There's a ghost! Ah!"
At Ruan Hongmei's scream, the face moved slightly; its mouth curled into a sinister smile as blood trickled down from the corner of its cracked lips.
Then, without knowing where it came from, a pair of hands slammed forcefully against the window with a loud bang.
"Oh my god! Does it want to come in?"
Since they were on the fourth floor and the window wasn't very sturdy, if it kept banging like that, it would definitely break the window. However, strangely enough, despite Ruan Hongmei's loud scream and the loud noise of it hitting the window, why hadn't any of the students next door been awakened?
She didn't remember the school's soundproofing being this good!
"What should we do? It might come in soon." Ruan Hongmei ran to Su Jin'er's bed, clutching her blanket, and the two girls held each other tightly.
"Don't you find it strange? How come no one in the next dorm heard your scream or the sound of it hitting the window?"
"Exactly! How could that be?"
"I wonder if it's just our illusion?"
"An illusion? Are we both experiencing the same illusion at the same time? That seems unlikely!"
Ruan Hongmei was right; it seemed impossible for both of them to have the same illusion simultaneously. But then why couldn't anyone else hear it?
"Ah! Jin'er, it's going to come in soon; the window is about to shatter."
Hearing Ruan Hongmei's words, Su Jin'er quickly glanced at the window. There were indeed several cracks on the glass; it wouldn't hold much longer.
Right, call for help!
Just as Su Jin'er was about to grab her phone, there was a knock on the door.
Did someone hear it?
However, that thought was quickly dismissed because, just like before, it was that eerie knocking sound with three knocks followed by a pause.
"Someone is knocking at the door, hurry and open it, we are saved."
Su Jin'er didn't have time to stop her; she had already run barefoot to open the door. However, there was nothing outside, only that Su Jin'er noticed that at the moment the knocking began, the face outside the window had disappeared as if it had never been there. Only a few cracks on the glass proved that it had indeed existed.
Seeing that Ruan Hongmei, who went to open the door, remained silent, Su Jin'er quickly ran over. Ruan Hongmei was stretching her head out to look around.
"Is anyone there?"
"Strange, I clearly heard knocking! Why is there no one?" Ruan Hongmei pulled her head back and turned to look at Su Jin'er.
Outside the door, a White Shadow suddenly floated by.
Su Jin'er widened her eyes in terror.
It appeared again!
Seeing Su Jin'er's terrified expression, Ruan Hongmei was taken aback, then turned her head back to peek through the slightly opened door. She had just seen a white figure floating toward the staircase.
Ruan Hongmei slammed the door shut with a bang, looking pale as she stared at Su Jin'er.
"There... is a ghost..."
