They already knew that Ruan Hongmei and Zuo Yi were waiting for them at the door. When she saw the red mark on Su Jin'er’s face, if it weren't for Chu Feifan signaling her from behind not to speak, she would have exclaimed. The classmates, upon seeing Su Jin'er’s face, first showed expressions of horror, followed by glee, because the campus beauty Su Jin'er had been disfigured, which was something many girls secretly wished for.
Back in the dormitory, when Su Jin'er saw the red mark on her face, she did not show any signs of surprise. In fact, throughout the journey, she had already sensed how everyone looked at her.
“Aren't you upset?” Ruan Hongmei asked as she looked at the mark on Su Jin'er’s face through the mirror.
“What’s there to be upset about? This isn’t bad at all!”
“Not bad? My goodness! Your face looks like this, and you say it’s not bad? Are you okay?” Ruan Hongmei was so shocked her mouth nearly dropped to the floor.
“It’s fine; it will get better after a while.”
Although Su Jin'er didn’t care, that didn’t mean others didn’t. The news of Su Jin'er’s disfigurement spread through the university like wildfire. Boys lamented her fate while girls reveled in it. Many girls gathered at the door of Room 414 to see what had happened to Su Jin'er, while boys who couldn’t enter the Girls' Dormitory surrounded the entrance tightly, much to the annoyance of the dormitory manager.
Su Jin'er and Ruan Hongmei leaned on the windowsill watching the boys outside. They didn’t show much surprise; people often feel a sense of schadenfreude when someone else experiences tragedy.
“Heh, it seems like you’ve suddenly become a celebrity at school,” Ruan Hongmei said helplessly.
“That’s just human curiosity.” After saying this, she returned to her dorm room, still thinking about her grandmother. There was no phone over there, and she couldn’t contact her grandmother.
After thinking for a long time, she finally decided to tell her father about this matter; he should handle it better than she could!
Su Jin'er called her father, but he didn’t answer; he was probably busy! Just as she was about to hang up, he picked up on the other end. She heard her father's tired voice from the receiver. For a moment, she suddenly didn’t want to speak anymore. However, for her grandmother's safety, she still managed to say something.
“Dad, it’s me, Jin'er.”
"Jin'er, what's wrong?"
"Are you at work?"
"Yes, I just finished a major surgery."
Dad is a Surgeon and often takes on big operations. Because of his high success rate, many people go directly to the hospital looking for him, so he is usually very busy.
"I just got back from Grandma's today, but some terrifying things are happening there, so I wanted to ask you to come home and take a look."
Su Jin'er took a breath after speaking. Dad is a doctor and naturally doesn't believe in ghosts or supernatural events. If she told him directly, he would definitely say she was overthinking it, so she didn't say it outright.
"What terrifying things?"
Su Jin'er thought for a moment but still didn't clarify. She only said, "You'll know when you come home. I'm not really sure; Grandma insisted on sending me back."
She knew that saying this would make Dad believe her.
"Alright, I'll go back tomorrow."
"Can't you leave right now?" Su Jin'er said anxiously, worrying about Grandma every moment.
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone. After a while, she heard Dad say, "Okay then! I'll come back today."
After hanging up the phone, Su Jin'er finally felt relieved. Although Dad doesn't believe in those things, as long as he is there, she feels secure because he is her support. With him around, she feels safe.
Ruan Hongmei slowly walked over to Su Jin'er. She had been wanting to ask what had happened to them and how the red marks on her face appeared, but seeing Su Jin'er's furrowed brows made her hesitate. Now that she finally saw Su Jin'er's expression relax, she leaned in closer.
"Um, what happened to you guys?"
Su Jin'er glanced at her and recounted everything that had occurred.
After listening, Ruan Hongmei's eyes widened in surprise. "The resentment of a baby is very strong, even more so than that of someone who died with a grudge. How did you encounter this?"
"Is there really such a thing as a soul?" This was a question she had asked countless times without receiving a clear answer. Even after witnessing it herself, she still found it hard to believe. The feeling of the baby lying on her was something she would never forget; it felt as hard and cold as holding a stiff, icy stone in the middle of winter, while her own arms felt like two iron clamps.
"I don't know, but I believe there is."
After an unknown amount of time, the noise outside had diminished significantly. Ruan Hongmei leaned on the windowsill and looked out, noticing that most of the students downstairs had left, with only a few remaining whispering among themselves. It seemed that the girls gathered outside their dormitory had mostly dispersed as well.
"It looks like they all left!"
"Doesn't matter; they were just a bunch of busybodies anyway. I'm a bit tired and want to take a nap." After saying this, she turned to go to bed but suddenly remembered something and turned back to ask, "Has anything happened at school recently?"
Ruan Hongmei hesitated; she wasn't sure if what happened could be considered an event.
Seeing her uncertain expression, Su Jin'er sat up and asked, "Did something happen?"
"I don't know if it counts as something happening."
Su Jin'er looked at her with curiosity, waiting for her to elaborate.
Ruan Hongmei took a deep breath and said, "After you left, Qin Yu came by. She told me something."
Su Jin'er remained silent, quietly waiting for her to finish.
"Qin Yu said that Zhuo Xiaoman's death has nothing to do with her, but she mentioned that the next person to die might be Xiaoying."
The first part of the statement did not concern Su Jin'er because she didn't believe that Zhuo Xiaoman's death was unrelated to Qin Yu. However, the latter part—about Xiaoying being the next to die—made her uneasy.
Did she know who the Killer was? Or could it be that she was the Killer herself?
"Did she say anything else?"
"She also said... she would definitely take Chu Feifan back, and if she couldn't have him, no one else could either."
"Well then, let's just wait and see."
Although she said this, fear still lingered in her heart. It wasn't that she was afraid of Qin Yu taking Chu Feifan away; rather, it was the implication of the latter statement. Looking at Qin Yu, it was clear that she was someone who followed through on her words. However, she wasn't the type to destroy what she couldn't have.
"Aren't you afraid?"
"Is fear useful? My fear will only make her more arrogant." With that, Su Jin'er lay back down. Would the next person really be Xiaoying? Or was Qin Yu just trying to scare her?
Forget it; I'll deal with it after I wake up! I didn't sleep well last night, and although I napped a bit on the car ride today, I never fully fell asleep. I remained in a half-dreaming state, which is even more exhausting. Although I didn't dream, my mind felt muddled, like an unbreakable paste.
"Then you should sleep for a while! I'll go read."
Su Jin'er nodded. Ruan Hongmei seemed a bit different from before, but she couldn't quite put her finger on what had changed. She felt muddled and soon drifted off to sleep.
How could she be so tired?
That was the last thought she had before falling asleep.
When she woke up, it was completely dark outside. Her stomach growled with hunger, and she reluctantly got out of bed to look for something to eat. However, when she saw that the hour hand on her watch pointed to ten o'clock, she gave up on the idea of going out.
I wonder if there are any instant noodles in the dorm?
"Are you hungry?" A sudden voice startled Su Jin'er. When she saw it was Ruan Hongmei, she let out a sigh of relief.
"Here, take this." Ruan Hongmei handed Su Jin'er a food container. The container looked familiar, but she couldn't immediately recall whose it was.
"Fish! Where did you get this?" Su Jin'er asked in surprise after opening the lid and discovering it contained her favorite fish.
"I don't have such great skills, and I didn't even know you liked fish! This is from Chu Feifan. Look how much he cares about you!"
So it was him; no wonder the container looked so familiar.
A warm feeling spread through her heart. But how did he know that she liked fish?
"Mm, it's really delicious! Do you want to try some?" Su Jin'er said as she poured a little fish from the container and offered it to Ruan Hongmei.
"No way! This is for you; how could I eat it?" Ruan Hongmei pouted, looking a bit jealous.
"Alright, hurry up and eat, it's really delicious!"
The two chatted happily while eating.
After finishing, Su Jin'er was about to wash the dishes when she suddenly felt as if someone was staring at her. The uncomfortable sensation was like thousands of ants crawling on her back. She turned around abruptly to find Ruan Hongmei lying on the bed, flipping through a book, not looking at her. However, as she turned back, the feeling of being watched returned. Her scalp tingled, and when she glanced out the window, she saw a distorted face pressed against the glass.
"Ah..." she screamed, dropping the bowl in her hand onto the floor.
"What happened?" Ruan Hongmei jumped up from the bed in shock, accidentally hitting her head against the wall. Rubbing her head in pain, she followed Su Jin'er's gaze out the window.
It was pitch black outside; there was nothing there.
"What happened?" she asked again. She knew Su Jin'er wasn't one to overreact; she must have seen something.
Su Jin'er trembled all over, her teeth chattering as she said, "There's someone outside."
