"Let her lie on that bed," Lin Yazhi said, pointing to the single bed.
Lu Lili glanced at Su Jin'er and then carefully helped Cheng Xiaoying lie down. However, as soon as she lay down, she immediately sat up again, clutching Lu Lili's arm and screaming. Lu Lili leaned close to her ear and whispered something, and Xiaoying quickly calmed down, obediently lying back on the bed.
"You all can go out now!" At this moment, Lin Yazhi's teasing expression had completely vanished.
This time, only the four of them had come over, so the three waited outside. The waiting time always felt long. During this period, Chu Feifan explained his relationship with Lin Yazhi to Su Jin'er.
It turned out that Lin Yazhi was the daughter of a close friend of his father. Lin Yajie's mother had died shortly after giving birth to her, and her father, fearing that she would suffer, never remarried and raised her alone. However, fate did not favor this girl; when she turned 18, her father passed away from liver cancer. Later on, it was Chu Feifan's father who supported her financially. She was a very obedient child who not only got into college but also pursued a doctorate in psychology. Most importantly, she had a great personality and was not at all self-conscious about being an orphan; instead, she was even more lively and optimistic.
After listening to Chu Feifan's account, Su Jin'er felt a newfound respect for Lin Yazhi. Earlier, she had been filled with fear towards her, but now it was awe—yes, awe. She didn't understand why she had been afraid of her. Wasn't it often said that if one did not do anything wrong, there was no need to fear? And she hadn't done anything wrong; why was she afraid of having her thoughts seen through?
Perhaps everyone fears being understood too well!
She comforted herself with this thought.
The door to the room opened, and Lin Yazhi walked out with a pale face. Su Jin'er and Chu Feifan stood up simultaneously and approached her, while Lu Lili, who had been silent on the side, dashed into the room.
"How is she?"
"Although it took a lot of effort, I didn't let you down."
Lu Lili came out of the room and asked, "What happened to her?"
"Don't call for her; she hasn't had a good sleep in a long time. Let her rest for a while!"
Lu Lili turned to look at Cheng Xiaoying's peaceful sleeping face and said, "Alright, but can I stay with her inside?"
Lin Yazhi nodded in agreement.
"Let's go to another room."
The walls of a typical psychological clinic are soundproof, so no matter which room you speak in, people outside cannot hear. Lin Yazhi led them to an adjacent room, which contained simple furniture like a bed and a wardrobe. This room seemed to be where she lived.
"Do you usually live here?" Su Jin'er asked while surveying the room. It was very tidy, clearly a girl's space, with cute pink curtains. There was a desk by the bedside filled with psychology books and a laptop. On one wall stood a white wardrobe, the bed facing east, while the west wall had a door that likely led to the bathroom.
Lin Yazhi filled two cups with water from the water dispenser at the door and placed them in front of them. She then poured herself a cup, took a sip, and said, "That girl really watched some terrifying things; no wonder she was so scared."
"What exactly did she see?"
Lin Yazhi's body involuntarily trembled slightly, her face turning even paler. She organized her thoughts and slowly recounted Cheng Xiaoying's words.
Zhuo Man was my rival in love; she died, and I should be happy about it. However, I couldn't feel any happiness at all. That afternoon, I sat in my dormitory for hours, filled with sadness. At that moment, I realized I didn't hate her as much as I thought. Zhuo Man had a good relationship with Xiangxiang, but after Zhuo Man died, Xiangxiang became strange and erratic. I was scared and wanted to move out, but before I could do so, something horrifying happened.
That night, I went to bed early because I wasn't feeling well. In the middle of the night, I woke up needing to use the bathroom. I really didn't want to get up, but it was something I couldn't hold back, so I got up and went.
As soon as I lay back down on my bed, I noticed Wang Xiangxiang was also awake. I thought she was going to the bathroom too and turned over to continue sleeping. However, I didn't hear her footsteps going to the bathroom, so I turned back to see what she was doing. Just then, I saw a pale face that nearly made me scream. But upon closer inspection, it was Wang Xiangxiang. I asked her why she was standing silently by my bed, but she didn't answer; instead, she looked at me with a strange smile that sent chills down my spine.
Just as I was about to scold her, she turned around and returned to her bed, lying there stiffly like a zombie. I was terrified but didn't dare make a sound. Fortunately, she closed her eyes and went back to sleep; I thought she might be sleepwalking! So I didn't pay much attention. However, just as I was about to fall asleep again, there came a "thud thud" sound from outside the door. It wasn't knocking; it sounded like a boy dribbling a basketball against the floor. Terrified, I covered my head with the blanket but continued shaking uncontrollably. Gradually, the sound seemed to fade away, but the air inside the blanket became suffocating. So I let my eyes, nose, and mouth peek out. But immediately, I was horrified by what I saw: at that moment, my body froze in place because I saw someone walking on their head—not upside down but literally walking on their head. The person had their back to me; although I couldn't see their face, I recognized their clothes—those were what Zhuo Man wore on the day she died. Hiding under the blanket in fear of moving, I could clearly see her body and even smelled a decaying odor.
Then I realized that Wang Xiangxiang lying on the bed had disappeared. Suddenly, I remembered the story Zhuo Man once told about that woman who committed suicide.
Just when I didn't know what to do, Zhuo Xiaoman suddenly spoke, just like the story she told: Hehe, I found you, hehe, I found you...
She kept repeating this phrase, her voice cold and terrifying. My breathing became increasingly rapid; it seemed she heard me. Suddenly, she turned her face towards me as if jumping. In the moonlight, I clearly saw her face—covered in blood with white bones showing, severely deformed. If it weren't for her clothes, I wouldn't have believed she was Zhuo Xiaoman. She laughed eerily, her mouth stretching back to her ears. However, the strange thing was that she seemed unable to see me. This did not provide me any comfort because the chilling aura emanating from her almost froze my body. Even though I was covered with a blanket, that coldness felt like it was coming from deep within my heart. Gradually, I lost consciousness.
After hearing Lin Yazhi's account, Su Jin'er and Chu Feifan were both drenched in cold sweat. They could imagine how terrified Cheng Xiaoying must have been at that moment. However, what they needed to worry about now was whether that thing walking on its head was really Zhuo Xiaoman.
"Could she be lying?" Su Jin'er suddenly asked.
Lin Yazhi shook his head and said, "Impossible. What a person says under hypnosis is the truest expression of their inner self. She was initially unwilling to speak; it took a lot for me to open her heart. Moreover, her expression at that time was one of fear; it didn't seem fake at all."
"But how can there be ghosts in this world?" Chu Feifan said in confusion.
"Actually, I've seen one too—the one that did this to my foot was also Zhuo Xiaoman's ghost." Su Jin'er didn't know why she said this; although she had never believed before, having witnessed it herself made it hard to convince herself otherwise.
"You've seen it too? Can you tell us about it?" Lin Yazhi seemed very curious about her experience.
Su Jin'er took a deep breath and recounted what happened that night and her encounter with the old man. She knew very well that each time she recalled those memories, they became more vivid in her mind; in fact, she wished she could forget them.
"From this perspective, you and she must have seen the same person."
Su Jin'er questioned, "How can you be sure it's a person and not... a ghost?"
"Hehe, you're studying medicine; do you really believe there are ghosts in this world? At least I don't believe it. I always think human hearts are much scarier than ghosts."
Su Jin'er understood that she shouldn't believe in the existence of ghosts; however, the experience from that night made it impossible for her to convince herself it was a person because no human could walk on their head. Moreover, she clearly saw white fluid flowing from inside its head so close that it forced her to believe otherwise.
"But how is it possible for a person to walk on their head?" After thinking for a long time, she finally asked the question that was on her mind.
"People can't do that, but what if it's not a person? Oh! Of course, I don't mean a ghost, but if something else replaces the person, then it might be possible." Su Jin'er tilted her head in confusion.
"For example, a mannequin. You should know that with the advancement of science, it's not impossible to make a mannequin that looks almost like a real person. Besides, it was nighttime, so it was hard to see clearly. Coupled with people's fear, it's easy to misinterpret what they see."
Su Jin'er thought about it and realized Lin Yazhi was right; she had indeed been very scared at that time, and it was pitch dark, so it was normal for her not to see clearly.
"There is indeed such a possibility," she said with an awkward smile.
Lin Yazhi glanced at her watch and said, "Alright, she should be waking up now. Let's go back!"
"Wait a minute, after she wakes up, will she be able to return to normal?" Chu Feifan asked.
"That's hard to say. Generally speaking, as long as someone who has been frightened is not scared again, they will naturally recover over time. However, there are some people who may never get better."
As she spoke, she pushed open the door of the psychological clinic and happened to see Lu Lili supporting Cheng Xiaoying as they walked out.
