Su Jin'er looked at the silent Ruan Hongmei in disbelief; everything was indeed hard to explain.
"I don't know either. When I went in, I only saw you alone in the dormitory, choking yourself with a red face. Could it be that someone controlled your thoughts?"
Controlled thoughts?
She had heard before that some people used psychological knowledge to control others' behavior, but she had only heard about it and never seen it.
"I don't really believe that people's thoughts can be controlled. If we're talking about hypnosis, that's possible, but control seems a bit too supernatural," Su Jin'er shook her head skeptically.
Ruan Hongmei lowered her head, her fingers intertwined as if she had something to say. Su Jin'er understood that she always showed this demeanor when she had something difficult to express.
"Alright, just say whatever you want. I won't be angry."
"Have you ever heard of raising a ghost?" After holding back for a long time, she finally spoke up.
Su Jin'er did not show surprise because she knew that the things Ruan Hongmei found hard to say were usually related to demons, so she nodded and said, "I've read about it in books, but I've never seen it."
"My grandfather said that when he was young, he saw someone raise a ghost. Although he never saw what the ghost looked like, he said that person made a lot of money using the ghost."
"Making money?" She found it hard to believe; previously, she had only heard that raising ghosts was for killing people and had never heard of it being used for profit.
"Yes, that person was a fortune teller. Actually, he didn't know anything, but somehow learned the technique of raising ghosts and kept one at home to tell fortunes. Later, I heard he was discovered and his ghost was killed."
"Killed the ghost? How is that possible? I read before that ghosts can't die!"
"I don't know; my grandfather said it was killed," Ruan Hongmei pouted.
"I don't think it's about raising ghosts. By the way, have Captain Xing and the others come?"
"Yes, he came to ask me some questions and then left. He seemed to say he was going to check on the construction site."
"What happened at the construction site?"
"I'm not very sure. It seems that today during construction, a worker suddenly fell from the scaffolding and apparently saw something he shouldn't have."
"Something he shouldn't have seen?" She paused in confusion.
"Right, by the way, the doctor said you can go back to school once your IV is finished."
Su Jin'er looked at the IV bottle, which still had a third left. She pulled out the needle and stood up. "Let's go back now."
"You—why did you take it out? Hey, Jin'er." Ruan Hongmei quickly followed Su Jin'er, who had already run out.
They were on the eighth floor. Su Jin'er stood at the elevator waiting for it, while Ruan Hongmei sulked beside her.
The elevator arrived, and the doors slowly opened. There wasn't a single person inside; it was rare to find an empty elevator in a hospital. Su Jin'er glanced around, feeling strange but still stepped inside.
She pressed the button for "1," and the elevator shook slightly before beginning its descent.
The elevator felt oppressive, a nearly enclosed space where she could hear her own heartbeat in the silence. Ruan Hongmei obediently stood to one side, the air thick with tension.
The elevator stopped, and the doors slowly opened. Su Jin'er stepped out with one foot, but what she saw made her hair stand on end. The area that should have been the first-floor lobby had turned into a terrifying morgue. Her eyes widened in horror as she saw the word "Morgue" right in front of her, written in red letters that looked as if they were stained with blood. It seemed like blood could drip down at any moment.
Ruan Hongmei pressed her body tightly against Su Jin'er, trembling violently as she looked at the morgue.
Su Jin'er slowly turned her eyes to the elevator buttons. She had clearly pressed for the first floor; why did the elevator go down to the basement? This was too unbelievable.
"Is this our school's Affiliated Hospital?" Her voice trembled slightly.
"Yes!" Ruan Hongmei nodded.
The school's Affiliated Hospital indeed had a basement level, and it was also a Morgue, but it was said to have been unused for a long time. So why did the elevator go down to the basement?
In just a few seconds, it felt like an eternity had passed. The elevator doors slowly closed, the bright red letters disappearing from view, but the fear in both of their hearts did not fade.
She pressed the button for the first floor again, and this time she clearly saw that she was pressing the button for the first floor.
The elevator ascended slowly and soon stopped again. The doors opened gradually, and Su Jin'er’s breathing became rapid. However, the terrifying situation occurred once more: outside the doors was still the Morgue.
"What should we do? Jin'er, I'm so scared. Why is this happening?" Ruan Hongmei quietly cried as she clung to Su Jin'er’s arm.
"It's okay, don't be afraid. We'll try again." Although she said this, Su Jin'er felt fear in her heart as well.
This time, Ruan Hongmei pressed the button. The elevator's display indeed showed 1. They kept their eyes fixed on the elevator's numbers, not daring to blink.
But then, something that shattered their hopes happened again: the elevator stopped at a floor that simply did not exist.
Since it was the school's Affiliated Hospital, although nearby residents would come here for treatment, it wasn't in the city, so there wouldn't be many people. Therefore, when this building was constructed, only 11 floors were built. Now, however, the elevator displayed the number 12.
"How is that possible?" Tears streamed down Ruan Hongmei's face. "I don't want to die, Jin'er. I don't want to die."
"Don't be afraid; fear will make us lose our composure." She tightly grasped Ruan Hongmei's hand, which was already sweaty.
After waiting for a long time, the elevator doors still did not open, and the air inside began to grow murky. This made Su Jin'er feel uneasy.
The elevator remained stuck on a nonexistent floor, not moving for a long time. Just when they thought they would be trapped inside forever, the elevator suddenly jolted and began to descend rapidly.
"Ah—" Su Jin'er and Ruan Hongmei both screamed as the elevator plummeted.
This was it; they were doomed.
Just as they believed their end was near, the elevator came to a halt, and by then, they had crouched in the corner, terrified.
After a long while, they slowly lifted their heads.
"Are we dead?" Ruan Hongmei asked with wide eyes.
"No, the elevator stopped."
Then, the elevator doors slowly opened, revealing two people standing outside, looking at them in surprise.
"Are you okay?" one of them asked.
They were wearing uniforms from the elevator maintenance company.
The two women were drenched in sweat, staring fearfully at the people outside.
"Is the elevator broken?" Su Jin'er took a deep breath and spoke slowly.
"Yes, we were just repairing it. The camera was also malfunctioning, so we didn't know anyone had come up," the repairman said apologetically.
Upon hearing that the elevator was under repair, Ruan Hongmei angrily exclaimed, "Then why didn't you put up a sign saying it's under maintenance? Don't you know this could lead to someone's death?"
"I'm sorry, we did have it written down, but someone on the eighth floor tore it down, so..." the Repairman said apologetically.
Ruan Hongmei wanted to say something else, but Su Jin'er stopped her: "You all need to be more careful next time; this is too dangerous."
"Yes, yes, we will definitely be more careful next time."
The Repairman left with an apologetic demeanor, and they could still hear him talking about who had torn down the sign as he walked away.
"Fortunately, it was a close call," Ruan Hongmei said, patting her chest.
"I think someone wants to put us in danger," Su Jin'er's words made Ruan Hongmei's face turn pale.
"You mean someone wants to kill us?"
"Yes, that person knew beforehand that I would definitely want to go to the construction site after waking up, and the broken elevator just happened to be closest to our hospital room. So they tore down the sign above to make us think the elevator was working, then used it as a tool for murder. That tactic is really ruthless."
"Why would they want to kill us?"
"I think we might have grasped some of their secrets, so they had to silence us. But what could those secrets be?" She began to suspect that someone might be seeking revenge for Akasaka.
Akasaka shouldn't have been caught so easily; he actually ran out himself and got caught. She had always found this puzzling. She knew something must have happened at that moment that he couldn't bear, which led him to prefer being caught by the police and then committing suicide. But what could it have been?
Oh right, the thing she found in the dormitory seemed not to have been tested yet!
Thinking of this, she couldn't help but quicken her pace.
There were many people at the construction site; the police had cordoned off the area with caution tape. Officers were taking photos for evidence while Captain Xing was questioning witnesses. They squeezed through the crowd.
Seeing them approach, Chu Feifan quietly walked over to Ruan Hongmei and said, "Didn't I tell you not to tell her? Why did you say it again?"
"I forgot! But how did he die?"
Ruan Hongmei stretched her neck to try and see the scene.
Su Jin'er heard their conversation, but pretended not to and stepped forward. The body had already been removed, but there were still large bloodstains on the ground. She bent down and crawled under the police tape, walking towards the bloodstains.
"Jin'er—" Chu Feifan called out when he saw her go over.
"Hey! Classmate, you shouldn't come in here; it will disturb the scene," a police officer said when he saw Su Jin'er. She smiled lightly; it was exactly what was said when they discovered Wang Xiangxiang's death.
Even though she thought this way, she still stopped. After all, they were police officers, and she was just an ordinary student. She looked around and suddenly noticed something white under a brick.
"Captain Xing, what is that?" she pointed at the brick.
Captain Xing looked at the spot she was pointing to, then walked over and pulled out a piece of paper from underneath. Upon seeing the paper, Su Jin'er's face immediately turned pale.
Because that paper clearly depicted an eye.
