Looking at the terrifying monster lying on the ground, everyone was drenched in cold sweat, unsure of what the creature would do next. It was so close to Jin'er that they had to ensure her safety.
The expression on the monster's face was strange; it looked at them as if it were a child. Although its appearance was quite horrifying, its expression gave off a completely harmless vibe.
Chu Feifan glanced at Zuo Yi and then frowned as he looked at Su Jin'er, who lay unconscious on the ground. All he wanted was to save her.
"It seems like it can understand us!" Ruan Hongmei whispered to Chu Feifan as she moved closer.
"Yes!" He then patted Zuo Yi's shoulder and said quietly, "You keep it occupied; I'll see if I can rescue Jin'er."
Zuo Yi nodded.
Chu Feifan pressed his back against the wall and slowly moved inward. The monster continued to lock eyes with him, its expression seemingly about to smile.
As if sensing Chu Feifan's approach, it suddenly turned its head, glaring angrily at him. Its mouth opened wide, and a large amount of blood flowed out. Its teeth were sharp, resembling those of a dog, and it stretched its head forward as if ready to bite.
Chu Feifan stopped in terror, watching it. When he ceased moving forward, the monster retracted its head but kept its gaze fixed on him. Yet, it clearly had no eyeballs—how could it still see?
A few people stood rigidly, unsure of what to do. The creature seemed to regard Su Jin'er as its prey, not allowing anyone to come near.
"What should we do? What exactly is that thing? It looks like a human but also like a dog," Ruan Hongmei whispered.
"I think it should be human. Don't you find it strange? There's so much blood here; hasn't anyone noticed?" Chu Feifan leaned against the wall, noticing that the blood on the ground seemed to be increasing. But why wasn't any flowing outside?
"You're right! What's even stranger is that this blood has already submerged our feet, yet we don't feel anything," Zuo Yi said, looking curiously at the blood that was nearly covering his feet.
"Could this be an illusion? This terrifying monster might not even exist," Chu Feifan noted.
With this thought in mind, he decided to test it out. If their assumption was wrong, at least they could observe how this monster harmed or killed people. They all understood that if any one of them faced this creature alone, they would be terrified. But now there were three of them, and this monster should have a physical form—unlike those formless entities. Chu Feifan slowly began to move his feet again. The monster issued another warning, but this time Chu Feifan paid no attention. It seemed the creature sensed his intent and began to approach him slowly as well, its mouth wide open. Its hands were hidden in the blood, making them invisible. The distance between them grew smaller while beads of sweat formed densely on Chu Feifan's forehead. His legs trembled, but seeing his beloved girl lying unconscious in a pool of blood made it impossible for him to ignore her plight.
Finally, they were only one meter apart. Chu Feifan took a deep breath and suddenly stepped forward. He thought the monster would surely pounce on him, but strangely, he felt no pain. Ruan Hongmei and Zuo Yi, who stood nearby, were also tense and dared not breathe. However, they did not hear any sounds of fighting. When they opened their eyes, they realized that the room was empty—no monster, no blood everywhere—only Su Jin'er was unconscious near the window.
"It seems that was really just our illusion!" Chu Feifan said with a mocking smile.
He walked over and picked up Su Jin'er, and the three of them left the room. It was strange that their illusion had felt so real, and this time it was an illusion experienced by all three of them together, which was indeed puzzling!
Su Jin'er remained unconscious. The administrator allowed Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi to enter their dormitory this time. He placed her on the bed and sat beside her, looking at her pale face; she seemed to be dreaming, her brows tightly furrowed.
Zuo Yi leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed as he watched them. It was already late, and the other students had gone to sleep. Suddenly, footsteps echoed from downstairs. Zuo Yi looked warily toward the stairs as the footsteps reached the third floor and then climbed to the fourth floor, slow and heavy.
Gradually, a figure appeared at the top of the stairs—it was the administrator.
Zuo Yi sighed in relief and turned his head away.
"Students, you can go back now; the girls are all asleep. It's not good for you to be here," the administrator's voice sounded even hoarser than last time.
Zuo Yi moved slightly and replied, "Understood."
Chu Feifan stood up and said to Ruan Hongmei, "Please take care of her tonight. Call me if anything happens."
"Okay!"
After seeing off Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi, Ruan Hongmei sat dazedly on the bed, staring at Su Jin'er’s still sleeping face. She couldn't help but frown; everything she saw in the data room was still vivid in her mind. Although she tried hard to forget it, the image of that monster was etched in her brain so clearly. She knew she wouldn't be able to sleep tonight. Wiping Su Jin'er’s face and hands with a towel, she leaned against the wall, reflecting on everything that had happened. That girl who jumped off the building was really foolish; it wasn't worth it to commit suicide for a man who didn't love her. However, she wondered if Captain Xing had interrogated that despicable boyfriend of hers. His girlfriend jumped off a building for him, yet he didn't even show up. If she found out who that man was, she would definitely beat him until he couldn't be recognized—better yet, make his mother not recognize him either.
Su Jin'er’s fingers twitched slightly before she slowly opened her eyes. Ruan Hongmei was still staring at the ceiling and did not notice that Su Jin'er had woken up.
"Hongmei!" she called softly.
"Jin'er! You're awake?" Ruan Hongmei exclaimed excitedly.
She slowly sat up, "What happened to me? It hurts so much."
She reached back to touch her back, where it felt like she had been hit, a piercing pain.
"Where does it hurt?" Ruan Hongmei asked as she supported her.
"On my back."
Ruan Hongmei gently lifted her shirt, revealing a large purple bruise on her fair skin.
"Someone hit you!" Ruan Hongmei said with concern.
"I don't know. I only remember having a very strange dream. After waking up, I went into the bathroom, and then I don't remember anything else."
"Well, when I came back, I heard you shouting loudly in the bathroom. When I went in, I found you sitting on the floor with water everywhere, and you kept saying 'blood.' I looked around but didn't see any blood, but you seemed really scared, and then you rushed out of the bathroom."
Ruan Hongmei recounted how she discovered Jin'er and how she, along with Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi, managed to rescue her.
The more Su Jin'er listened, the deeper her frown became. They had seen that monster before in the data room, and now they had encountered it again. They were certain it was just an illusion.
An illusion?
"I understand now," she suddenly said happily.
"What do you understand?"
"I know why the illusion occurred and where that so-called drug from Akabane Research is." After saying this, she jumped off the bed and ran toward the bathroom.
She dashed into the bathroom and began searching. Ruan Hongmei looked at her in confusion and then started searching as well.
The bathroom and toilet were inside, while their usual washing area was outside. The restroom was divided into three cubicles, with the toilet on the right and the bathroom on the left. She didn't find anything at the sink outside, so she entered the bathroom but found nothing there either. The same went for the toilet. When she returned outside, she frowned. Could her intuition be wrong?
No, it couldn't be wrong; she trusted her instincts.
She slipped back into the bathroom, her intuition telling her that whatever she was looking for should be inside.
The bathroom was simple, just a few square meters with only a showerhead. If something were hidden there, it would be easy to find, yet they had always used the bathroom without discovering anything.
Leaning against the wall, she looked up at the milky white ceiling.
Suddenly, she noticed a small black object above the showerhead that would have been easy to miss if one wasn't paying close attention.
So it was here.
"Hongmei, bring me a stool."
Ruan Hongmei moved a stool over and asked, "What do you need a stool for?"
Su Jin'er didn't respond; she simply placed the stool on the ground and stood on it. She reached up and took down the small black object, which was wrapped in a tiny piece of black cloth. Inside was something small, resembling a bean.
"What is that?"
"I think this must be what Akabane Research calls something that can induce hallucinations!"
She found another piece of cloth and wrapped the object several times before placing it in a drawer, planning to hand it over to Captain Xing tomorrow.
Sitting back on her bed, she sighed in relief. "Although this situation is quite frightening, at least we found that research material."
She smiled, forgetting about the horrifying scream from earlier that afternoon.
"Yeah, that's right!"
"I think there should be that thing in the data room as well, and definitely more than what we have in our dorm. But what puzzles me is that this thing is in our dorm, so why does it only affect me?"
"Exactly! Why am I fine?" Ruan Hongmei pouted.
"Forget it, I guess only the deceased Akasaka knows about this. I'm so hungry! Is there anything to eat?"
Ruan Hongmei said dejectedly, "I brought you food when I came back, but as soon as I reached the door, I heard your scream and got so scared that I dropped it. Luckily, we still have instant noodles in our dorm. Let's make do with that for now!"
"Instant noodles are fine too!"
