A gust of wind blew into the bedroom, and Su Jin'er slowly opened her eyes. It was pitch black in front of her; she remembered that the light was on before she went to sleep. Why was it off now? Had Hongmei returned? She rubbed her temples and sat up.
"Hongmei, are you back?"
The room was silent, with no sounds at all, only the rustling of the curtains as the wind blew. It was so quiet that she could almost hear her own heartbeat.
Had she not returned yet? Who turned off the light?
She recalled the mournful cry she had heard in the afternoon and shivered involuntarily. She got out of bed to put on her shoes but noticed a pair of white cloth shoes by her bedside.
"Whose shoes are these?" As she bent down to take a closer look, she suddenly raised her head because there were feet inside those shoes—feet without legs.
Terrified, she moved backward, accidentally bumping into something hard. She turned around and saw a pale face devoid of color. Her mouth dropped open in horror as she let out a scream.
"Ah—"
She sat up abruptly, gasping for breath, sweat soaking her clothes.
The light was still on, the window was closed, there was no wind, and there were no shoes on the floor or any pale faces behind her.
It had just been a dream!
But why did she have such a terrifying dream? And why did it feel so real?
She walked to the window and opened it. The breeze rushed in, clearing her mind significantly. Some students were still strolling around campus, their shadows elongated by the streetlights on the ground. The leaves rustled in the wind, and a mischievous student had hung a piece of white cloth from a tree branch, resembling a ghost floating in mid-air.
Shaking her head, she turned and walked toward the bathroom. She splashed cold water on her face and looked at herself in the mirror. The dark circles under her eyes indicated insufficient sleep. A droplet of water slid down her smooth, fair cheek to her chin before slowly dripping into the sink. Her face was perfectly shaped, with features that complemented each other well; however, no one is perfect. Beneath her right eye was a tiny black dot that, while not very noticeable, still detracted slightly from her beauty.
She looked down at her hands but noticed a small black stain on her left index finger. She turned on the faucet to wash it off again, but the stain wouldn’t come off; instead, the water gradually turned red and then increasingly crimson until it became blood. A torrent of blood flowed from the faucet, staining her hands and clothes. The blood kept pouring out until it transformed the entire bathroom into a pool of blood while she stood there like a lifeless puppet in the blood pool.
Just as the blood was about to engulf her, she seemed to awaken and let out a heart-wrenching scream.
"Jin'er—" Ruan Hongmei, who had just returned and reached the doorway, nearly fell to the ground upon hearing Jin'er's cry.
She opened the door and did not find Jin'er; the sound was coming from the bathroom. Pushing open the bathroom door, she saw Su Jin'er curled up in the corner, her eyes fixed on the sink, where water was still flowing. A puddle had already formed on the floor, and Su Jin'er was sitting in it, hugging her legs.
"Jin'er, what's wrong? Why are you sitting in the water?" She turned off the water and then gently placed her hand on Su Jin'er's shoulder.
She rushed over to embrace her; her body was cold and devoid of warmth, trembling as she leaned against her.
"Blood, so much blood," she whispered.
Hearing her words, Ruan Hongmei was startled. She turned to look behind her; there was nothing but the water on the floor.
"Where is there blood? There's nothing here!"
Su Jin'er's appearance filled her with dread.
"Blood, so much blood. Run, it's going to drown us." Her eyes remained fixed on the sink, devoid of any emotion. Yet, she was clearly afraid; why were there no traces of fear in her eyes?
She recalled what that girl had said about the eyes of the dead.
Her heart raced wildly as she held Su Jin'er tightly. "Jin'er, wake up! It's me, Hongmei! Please don't scare me."
Ruan Hongmei was on the verge of tears; she had never seen Su Jin'er like this before.
"Blood, so much blood! Run, run!" With that, Su Jin'er suddenly pushed Ruan Hongmei to the ground and dashed out of the bathroom.
Ruan Hongmei immediately chased after her but could no longer see Su Jin'er's figure. As she ran downstairs, she called Chu Feifan, but by the time she exited the dorm room, there was no sign of Su Jin'er anywhere.
Where could she have gone?
Ruan Hongmei stood at the dorm room door, unsure of which direction to search.
"Hongmei, what on earth happened?" Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi rushed over, panting. He had just stepped into the dorm room when he received Ruan Hongmei's call.
"I don't know either. When I returned to the dormitory, she was sitting alone in the bathroom, repeatedly saying 'blood, so much blood,' and then she ran out. By the time I chased after her, I couldn't see her anymore."
Ruan Hongmei cried.
Chu Feifan looked around and said, "Let's split up to search. If you find her, call me. If not, let's meet back here."
"Okay!"
Ruan Hongmei searched to the right of the dormitory while Chu Feifan went left, and Zuo Yi headed forward. It was already ten o'clock at night; most students had returned to their dorms to sleep. The vast campus was shrouded in darkness, illuminated only by dim streetlights, while a few dormitories still had their lights on.
Jin'er, where are you? Please don't let anything happen!
As Chu Feifan searched, he prayed silently. Recently, he had been busy with the Singing Competition and had neglected Jin'er. Earlier that afternoon, another girl had suddenly committed suicide, and he heard from Ruan Hongmei that the girl's screams had frightened Jin'er. He never expected that something would happen to Jin'er that night. He remembered the last time he lost consciousness in the study room; it was Jin'er who saved him with her prayer beads. Why did Jin'er always wear those beads? Since he met her, she had almost never taken them off. Suddenly realizing something, he took out his phone and immediately dialed Ruan Hongmei's number.
"Hello! Hongmei? Have you found Jin'er?"
"Not yet. Do you have any news?" Ruan Hongmei's voice came through, breathless and hurried.
"I don't either. I just wanted to ask you something."
"Go ahead."
"You should know about the prayer beads Jin'er often wears on her wrist, right?"
"Yes! What about them?" Her voice seemed calmer now, as if she had stopped running.
"When you were showering together, did she ever take them off?"
Ruan Hongmei replied without hesitation, "No, I found it strange too, so I asked her about it once. She said she has a weak constitution and easily attracts unclean things, so she always wears them. She mentioned that although she doesn't believe in it, she's gotten used to wearing them and never takes them off."
Easily attracting unclean things? Could it be that what happened to him in the study room was also related to something unclean? He gradually slowed his pace.
"I might know where Jin'er is," he said, a hint of fear in his voice.
"Where?"
"The data room!"
The three of them stood beneath the office building. Just this afternoon, a girl had jumped from here, ending a young life.
"Are you sure she's in the data room?" Ruan Hongmei's voice trembled.
"I don't know," Chu Feifan replied.
His voice was cold and devoid of warmth, and it felt as if the temperature around them had dropped suddenly.
"Should we go up and check?"
"Of course!"
After Chu Feifan finished speaking, he quickly walked upstairs. Although the data room always gave him an eerie feeling, and he had encountered two terrifying events there, strangely enough, he always felt that what happened in the data room had nothing to do with Akasaka.
The sound of their footsteps was particularly jarring in the quiet night. Despite their efforts to remain silent, the night was too still; even their breathing became cautious, fearful of waking something terrifying that lay asleep in the darkness.
Sure enough, the door to the data room was open, and it was dark inside—nothing could be seen.
A cold wind blew out from within, causing them to shiver as they stood outside. The ancient chill was a bit excessive.
Chu Feifan was the first to step inside. It wasn't that he wasn't afraid; rather, his desire to save Jin'er temporarily suppressed his fear. Ruan Hongmei and Zuo Yi followed closely behind him.
However, the moment they entered, they witnessed something they would never forget for the rest of their lives.
The room was filled with blood, a nauseating metallic scent permeated the air, Su Jin'er lay unconscious on the floor, and there was that horrifying creature that looked human yet not human at all.
Three people stared in horror at the creature kneeling on the ground, cold sweat streaming down their backs as if insects were crawling on them. The creature's skin was gone, revealing a body covered in blood, with long hair hanging down to the ground. Although they could not see its face, they could easily imagine how terrifying it must be.
At that moment, it seemed oblivious to their presence, focused instead on the unconscious Su Jin'er, with thick blood dripping onto her face.
"Get away!" Chu Feifan shouted, startling not only the creature but also Ruan Hongmei and Zuo Yi standing behind him.
Hearing the voice, the creature slowly turned its head, its eyeless gaze fixated on them. Its lips quivered as blood continued to flow from its mouth, and white worms wriggled on its skinless body. They suppressed their nausea as they watched the monster.
The creature gradually turned its body, maliciously "looking" at them before suddenly breaking into a grin that sent chills down their spines.
"What exactly are you?" Zuo Yi stepped forward, recalling their previous encounter with it.
The creature shifted its attention to Zuo Yi, tilting its head as if pondering something. Its expression was comical, yet they found nothing to laugh about.
