The registration period quickly came to an end, and the next day was the Preliminary Selection. The participating students were nervously preparing, and Chu Feifan had heard that she was also competing, so he made a special call to encourage her. However, he wasn't surprised at all that Su Jin'er wasn't participating.
That evening, after dinner, the two of them stayed in their dormitory and began selecting songs on the computer. Ruan Hongmei said that the most painful part of participating in the competition was not standing on stage but choosing a song. Not only did it have to be suitable for her, but it also had to be something she could handle. Although this wasn't a competition on a national or even global scale, it was still a significant event that deserved attention. They had also heard through the grapevine that the champion might receive a substantial cash prize.
"I've been searching for so long and still can't find a song that suits me!" Ruan Hongmei sighed as she leaned back in her chair, looking helplessly at Su Jin'er.
"Choosing a song is inherently exhausting; you should have thought about it when you decided to sign up!" Su Jin'er continued to focus on her laptop.
"Then I guess I'll just withdraw!" Ruan Hongmei softly leaned back in her chair.
"You really are someone who gives up easily!" Su Jin'er shook her head helplessly.
"Alright, I was just joking. I think I'll sing my best song during the Preliminary Selection, and we can take our time choosing later."
Su Jin'er nodded in agreement. Tomorrow was the Preliminary Selection, and if she suddenly chose a song she wasn't familiar with, she might not even make it past the Preliminary Selection.
"What’s your most familiar song?"
"It's that popular song 'My Song'! It's really nice, so I've been listening to it every day!"
"Then sing it for me!"
"Right now?"
"Of course!"
Ruan Hongmei cleared her throat and rolled up a book to use as a microphone. She took a deep breath, ready to sing, but then exhaled and fell onto her bed laughing loudly. Su Jin'er looked at her as if she were crazy, not understanding what was so funny.
"I can't! I haven't sung in so long; I'm feeling a bit shy."
Su Jin'er nearly fell off her chair in disbelief.
"Are you kidding? You're singing in front of me now; tomorrow you'll be singing in front of the judges. Are you really going to laugh then?" Su Jin'er said helplessly.
"Alright!" She sat up, tidied her clothes, cleared her throat again, and began to sing.
As soon as she opened her mouth, Su Jin'er was stunned. Her voice was clean and pure, giving off an ethereal feeling. She had heard this song before and liked it very much. She knew that the same song sung by different people could evoke different feelings, and Ruan Hongmei did not imitate anyone; she completely expressed her own voice and emotions. Su Jin'er was deeply moved.
When the song ended, Su Jin'er couldn't help but applaud.
Ruan Hongmei's eyes glistened with tears as she looked at Su Jin'er and said, "I've practiced this song for a long time; you are my first audience."
"I didn't expect your singing to be so beautiful. I think you can definitely pass the Preliminary Selection."
Ruan Hongmei pouted, "Is that all? Just passing the Preliminary Selection?"
"There are always greater talents out there. I don't know how others sing, so I can't make a judgment. But you really sang well. Your speaking voice is very different from your singing voice, and your emotions were spot on. However, I'm not a judge; these are just my personal feelings and don't represent the public opinion."
"Yes, I understand. But your words have already had a huge impact on me, so I will work hard."
"Drink plenty of water and avoid spicy foods. You sang this song very well, so get some rest!" After Su Jin'er finished speaking, she closed her computer, stretched, and walked into the bathroom.
"Can I wash with you?"
Ruan Hongmei said as she picked up her pajamas and squeezed into the bathroom.
"No way! Wait until I'm done before you wash, or you can wash first." Su Jin'er pushed her, trying to get her out.
"No way! Let's wash together! I'm not a guy." She stubbornly squeezed into the bathroom.
"Then you wash first; I'm going out." Su Jin'er said as she tried to leave the bathroom but was pulled back by Ruan Hongmei.
"I want to wash with you!"
Saying this, she started to take off Su Jin'er's clothes. Su Jin'er screamed that she was a pervert, but in the end, she couldn't resist Ruan Hongmei's strength and ended up washing together. They even squeezed onto the same bed to sleep.
The next day, the sun was shining brightly, almost to the point of being harsh. By nine in the morning, the sunlight was so intense that it was hard to keep one's eyes open. Su Jin'er and Ruan Hongmei stood on the playground under a pink umbrella. A red stage had already been set up for the competition, with a large banner behind it reading: Sixth Campus Singing Competition.
The playground was filled with people, as if a big star were about to hold a concert. The sun was blazing, but the students' enthusiasm was high; no one was willing to give up on the competition despite the heat. Perhaps this was one of the most anticipated events for medical students each year.
"Are we really going to have the Preliminary Selection here?" Ruan Hongmei said, wiping the sweat from her forehead with a tissue.
"It shouldn't be," came the reply.
After about five minutes, Chu Feifan appeared. Holding a microphone, he stood on stage and said, "Thank you all for coming to this year's Singing Competition. I am Chu Feifan, the Chairman of the Student Council. It seems like the sun is a bit harsh today, so I won't waste time with unnecessary talk. The venue for the Preliminary Selection is in our Student Council office. You all probably know why we chose that location, so please gather downstairs if you're participating in the competition. Ten students will enter at a time while the rest wait outside. Please line up properly and stay safe."
As he spoke, students below began to chatter, with girls discussing how handsome the new Chairman of the Student Council was.
"I heard many students are participating just to see if the Chairman is really as handsome as rumored," one student remarked.
"Really? You can see him without participating! Look, he's right there!" another girl said, covering her mouth.
"Exactly! But we also heard that the Chairman will only be a judge and won't perform; only the Vice Chairman will appear. But hey, the Vice Chairman is also quite a handsome guy!" one girl added, covering her mouth again and showing a starry-eyed expression.
Ruan Hongmei twitched her lips and looked at Jin'er, saying, "They really are infatuated! Don't they know our Chairman is already taken?"
Just after Ruan Hongmei finished speaking, a rather pretty girl chimed in, "You girls should stop being infatuated; have you forgotten about another person in our school?"
"Who?" several girls asked in unison.
"Su Jin'er! She's our school's beauty; she and our handsome guy are a perfect match. So don't get your hopes up," the girl said arrogantly, as if dismissing everyone else.
The other girls pouted in dissatisfaction: "Qin Yu, we haven't even seen Su Jin'er in person; who knows what she really looks like? Besides, Chu Feifan hasn't admitted he has a girlfriend yet, has he?"
A girl with short hair and slightly darker skin but still attractive spoke up.
Qin Yu flicked her hair and said, "Even if they are not a couple, Chu Feifan is still mine. It's not up to you."
After saying that, Qin Yu swayed her hips and left, leaving a few girls behind who were stretching their arms and kicking at her back.
"Do you have a rival in love again?" Ruan Hongmei teased, sticking out her tongue.
"I don't consider anyone a rival. As long as I know he likes me, that's enough," Su Jin'er replied lightly. Although she appeared indifferent, her heart did flutter slightly when that girl mentioned that Chu Feifan hadn't acknowledged her as his girlfriend.
They followed the crowd to the outside of the Student Council Office, where the order for the Preliminary Selection would be determined by drawing lots. The student council members were already outside preparing the necessary materials; all that was needed was for the students to line up and draw lots. Ruan Hongmei asked Su Jin'er to draw for her. She drew number 120, which meant they might have to wait until the afternoon, so the two went to have breakfast together.
On their way back, they happened to run into Chu Feifan, who was discussing something with a girl whose back looked somewhat familiar.
"Hey! There's your rival!" Ruan Hongmei nudged Su Jin'er when she recognized who it was.
"Don't say that."
Just then, Chu Feifan noticed them too. He smiled and said something to the girl before walking over. The girl turned around upon seeing them; she paused for a moment before coming over as well.
"What are you doing here? Hongmei, aren't you supposed to be participating in the Preliminary Selection?" Chu Feifan asked politely. After what happened last time, he seemed to have matured a lot.
"I drew number 120, so I might have to wait until the afternoon. That's why we just went for breakfast," Ruan Hongmei said while glancing at the girl behind him.
"I see! Well then, are you ready?"
"Yes, Jin'er has already helped me assess it."
"Jin'er? You are Su Jin'er?" The girl behind them quickly approached upon hearing her name and began to scrutinize her from head to toe.
Before Su Jin'er could speak, Ruan Hongmei wrapped her arm around her shoulder and said, "Yeah! Isn't she beautiful?"
The girl slightly curled her lips and replied, "She's just okay, isn't she? They are exaggerating."
"Hmph! Even if they exaggerated, they are still a hundred times prettier than you," Ruan Hongmei said loudly.
"You—" She pointed at Ruan Hongmei, then as if realizing something, lowered her hand and said, "I won't argue with you. Didn't you also participate in the competition? I'll see you on the field."
After saying that, the girl turned and left.
"Hey! Chu Feifan, are you even a man? You already have a girlfriend, how can you still flirt with other girls?" Ruan Hongmei shouted as she watched her walk away.
"We were just discussing the competition," Chu Feifan said, looking a bit wronged at Su Jin'er.
Su Jin'er, who had been silent, said, "Alright, it's fine. Let's go!"
For some reason, she felt something strange about that girl.
