She leaned against the wall, staring at the man in black who was still laughing as if he were a fool. She wanted to go up and smash his face into a pancake, but after moving her bound hands and feet, she gave up on that idea.
Not wanting to hear him laugh any longer, she rested her head against the wall and asked, “What happened to Zuo Yi? What did you do to him?”
“I can only say he was meddling in things that didn’t concern him.”
“What did you do to him?”
“Do you really want to know?” He bent down, looking at her with a half-smile.
“Of course!”
“Alright then!” He stood up, looking down at Su Jin'er and said, “I’ll take you to see him.”
He untied the ropes from Su Jin'er’s feet and led her into another room. The moment he opened the door, she was hit by a strong metallic smell of blood. A bad premonition made her body tremble involuntarily.
Although the door was open, it was pitch black inside and she could see nothing. The man in black reached out and turned on the light. She squinted her eyes, slowly adjusting to the brightness. However, even when her eyes could finally open in the light, she kept them tightly shut.
“Open your eyes and take a look! Don’t worry, it’s not as terrifying as you think.”
Su Jin'er’s breathing quickened. She knew very well that what he said couldn’t be trusted; the overwhelming smell of blood almost made her vomit, yet he claimed it wasn’t terrifying.
Though she was afraid to look, she slowly opened her eyes. When she saw everything before her, despair washed over her completely. It was true that Zuo Yi was not dead, but at that moment, she wished he were truly dead.
Zuo Yi sat in a pool of blood, covered in it. His hands kept grabbing things from the ground and stuffing them into his mouth. Blood dripped from the corners of his lips. When he saw Su Jin'er and the others enter, he lifted his head and smiled foolishly at them before continuing to eat whatever it was he had found.
"What is he eating?" Su Jin'er was on the verge of breaking down. The once clean Zuo Yi now looked like this.
"Internal organs, human internal organs."
"You bastard, let him go, let him go now."
"You should thank me. At least the person you see is still alive. If it weren't for that, you would only be looking at his corpse right now."
"I would rather see his corpse than look at him in such a state, neither human nor ghost!"
"Hehe, are you sure?"
Seeing his sinister smile, Su Jin'er shrank back. She thought that if she said she was sure, he would definitely show her Zuo Yi's corpse in the next second.
"What do you want to do?"
"I don't want to do anything. My goal is very simple: to conquer China." The man in black said proudly, holding his head high.
Hearing his words, Su Jin'er burst out laughing. She looked at him and said, "Do you really think you can conquer China just by yourself? That's really funny!"
The man in black glared at Su Jin'er, who continued to laugh at him, and angrily said, "Do you think I'm joking? Think about it; five years ago, I had the means to control all the male teachers in this school. Do you think that five years later I can't control everyone on campus?"
"Yes, maybe you can control this school, but don't you find it ridiculous? There are millions of Chinese people. When your Japanese forces mobilized the entire country, they couldn't defeat China. Do you really think your research will work now? It's truly laughable."
Su Jin'er said as she exited the room; she simply couldn't bear to see Zuo Yi in such a miserable state.
Hearing his research results being mocked, he became completely enraged, his face contorting with anger as he glared at Su Jin'er, as if he wanted to devour her.
"I tell you, what I want to do, I will accomplish. Even if I can't conquer all of China, I will destroy this school," he shouted hysterically, veins bulging on his forehead.
Su Jin'er retreated to the corner and sat down again; she didn't want to accompany him in his madness.
Seeing that Su Jin'er seemed unwilling to pay him any attention, he could only pace around the room like a spinning top.
"Please stop pacing in front of me. It's making me dizzy," Su Jin'er said impatiently.
He halted, his face twisted in a terrifying manner.
"Tell me, why aren't you afraid of me? Why?"
Furrowing her brows, Su Jin'er replied helplessly, "After all this, you just want me to be afraid of you? Yes, your behavior is indeed frightening. You fabricated these so-called ghost murders to cover up the truth. You're just trying to instill fear in people's hearts to satisfy your twisted psychology. Even if I were afraid, what would it matter? You wouldn't spare anyone just because they were scared. So I'm not afraid; do whatever you want!"
Her words nearly drove him insane. He spun around the room like a madman, stirring up dust that swirled in the air. Su Jin'er frowned and pressed herself tightly against the wall, trying not to inhale too much dust.
Seeing him spin like a top made Su Jin'er laugh; this person must have gone mad trying to conquer China. He had created so many terrifying incidents in this school and concealed them so well that it proved he was quite intelligent. She had heard people say that there is only a fine line between genius and madness; she felt that this person before her might turn into a madman at any moment.
Suddenly, he stopped and leaned closer to Su Jin'er, saying, "Do you know? I really want to kill you, but I promised Cheng He that I'd kill you myself."
"Hmph! You're not someone who keeps promises. You not killing me is just a way for you to exchange me for the ring in Cheng He's hand. Is it necessary to pretend?" Su Jin'er glanced at him disdainfully before turning her head away.
"You look down on me, don't you?"
"Yes, I look down on you. I admit you are smart, but you are using your intelligence in the wrong way. Are you trying to kill people just for fun?"
"Hmph! What's wrong with killing? Have you ever thought about how humans kill animals? Let me tell you, I'm doing pretty well if I don't cook and eat the people I've killed. When humans kill animals and eat their meat, do they ever consider what those animals are thinking? Do they care whether their relatives are sad or crying?"
Hearing his words, Su Jin'er was momentarily speechless. She looked at the disgusting face in front of her; how could he consider the feelings of animals? Or did he still have some compassion within him?
"Is it because people think of themselves as superior beings? Just because one is a higher animal does that give them the right to hunt other animals? Well then! I also consider myself a superior human among humans, so I have the right to kill those I deem inferior, and those so-called police shouldn't arrest me."
Su Jin'er stared at him in shock. She felt that killing animals was cruel, but it was part of the biological chain in this world that no one could change, and his thoughts were extreme.
"Do you also think my ideas are extreme? Ha! That's right; in the eyes of you so-called normal people, my thoughts are extreme. But in my view, my ideas are correct; your lack of understanding is your own problem."
"Enough! Stop trying to argue. No matter who you are or what your thoughts are, killing is wrong."
"I'm not asking for your judgment on whether my actions are right or wrong; shut up!" He was completely enraged by Su Jin'er and pulled out a piece of rag from somewhere to stuff into her mouth, then sat aside gasping for breath like a patient suffering from a severe cold.
Chu Feifan brought Captain Xing to the door of the Old Laboratory Building's basement. He remembered that the switch for the basement door was on that wall. Although he had seen Su Jin'er touch it before, he didn't know exactly where the button was. He stood where Su Jin'er had once stood and carefully examined the wall for any protrusions that might be the switch.
Finally, he found a very small button in the corner of the wall and pressed it hard; slowly, the door on that wall opened.
Captain Xing turned on his flashlight and was the first to enter. The dim beam made the basement appear shadowy, as if countless ghostly figures were swaying around. Even their footsteps sounded eerie and distorted in the silence. The human mind has its limits for endurance, especially Ruan Hongmei, who firmly believed in the existence of ghosts; her steps became chaotic with fear and unsteady due to trembling. The few minutes it took felt like they had traversed an entire world, and the air around them grew colder.
Ruan Hongmei crouched down, pressing her body tightly against Chu Feifan's arm, taking each step with extreme caution as if she might step on a landmine at any moment. Although Chu Feifan felt uncomfortable, he couldn't say anything; after all, she was just a girl.
The three looked around the empty basement; there seemed to be nothing that would attract attention. Captain Xing pointed to the wall on the right and said, "Hongmei, go check that wall and see if there’s a hidden door up there. Feifan, check this side."
Although Ruan Hongmei was very scared and still remembered what had happened here last time, she couldn't help but feel brave thinking about how Su Jin'er was currently in a dire situation. Despite this thought, her teeth continued to chatter.
After about ten minutes, Captain Xing said, "The secret door seems to be here; come take a look."
Chu Feifan and Ruan Hongmei gathered around. There was a tiny gap where Captain Xing was touching, which was almost impossible to notice unless one looked closely. It also seemed to have traces of something sticky.
"Recently, there have been frequent comings and goings here; otherwise, the marks wouldn't be so obvious. The person who built this secret door must have had ulterior motives! I believe there aren't many people in this basement, and even fewer know about this secret door," Captain Xing said with a half-smile.
Chu Feifan had already started searching for the switch to open the door. He was more anxious than anyone else; every minute that passed meant more danger for Su Jin'er.
