Watching the figure of the administrator walk away, Su Jin'er said, "She must know something; it's just a matter of whether we can get her to speak."
"She seems quite stubborn; it might be difficult to get her to open up," Ruan Hongmei agreed.
Chu Feifan frowned. This case had always been shrouded in mystery, never clear at any moment. Moreover, the Killer seemed to know their every move, destroying any potential evidence before they could act and diverting their attention with repeated accidents. This was the reason the Killer could evade capture time and again.
"Jin'er, you two wait here while I go get the authorization. No matter what, we must get into that archive today."
"Okay! We'll wait for you here."
Chu Feifan left the Library. Next week, he would officially be the Student Council Chairman; surely he should have the right to enter the archive.
Once Chu Feifan left, Su Jin'er and Ruan Hongmei each found a book they liked and sat down to read. Although Su Jin'er usually enjoyed mystery novels, there were none available at school, so she randomly picked up a medical book to read.
After a while, feeling a pain in her neck, she lifted her head and stretched it. As she looked up, her eyes caught sight of a small black notebook on the top shelf. Normally, this notebook wouldn't have drawn her attention, but for some reason, she felt compelled to see it.
She closed her book, moved a chair over to stand on it, and retrieved the notebook.
"What is that?" Ruan Hongmei asked, noticing Su Jin'er's strange behavior as she brought down the small notebook.
"I don't know, but I feel like this notebook is important."
She wiped off the dust with a tissue and placed the notebook on the table.
There was no name written on it, and after flipping through several pages without finding any words, she frowned. Could her intuition be wrong? After finishing flipping through the entire notebook without discovering a single word, she set it down in disappointment, furrowing her brow. Who would be so bored as to place a completely blank notebook on the top shelf?
At that moment, Chu Feifan walked over, shaking the keys in his hand. "Hey, I got it."
Su Jin'er put away the notebook and placed it in her backpack, then followed Chu Feifan to a corner at the back of the library. He moved aside a painting hanging on the wall, revealing a lock on the door to the archive room. The color of the archive door matched that of the wall, making it nearly impossible to notice without moving the painting.
Chu Feifan opened the door and tilted his head slightly, indicating for them to enter.
The archive room was clean and not as dusty as they had imagined. It was not very large, containing three rows of filing cabinets. However, there were not many documents inside; although all three rows had files, they were not fully stocked. At the back of the room was a desk and a chair, the only place to sit and read. A pink desk lamp sat on top, though it had faded over time. There was a small window on the right wall that provided enough light during the day to illuminate the entire room.
"We each take a cabinet and pull out any important documents we find to place on that desk," Su Jin'er said.
The three began searching separately: Ruan Hongmei took the first cabinet, Su Jin'er the second, and Chu Feifan the third. They worked in silence, with only the sound of pages turning breaking the quiet.
After about ten minutes, Ruan Hongmei suddenly exclaimed, "Jin'er, come look at this!"
Her voice was filled with excitement but also fear. Su Jin'er and Chu Feifan rushed over. Ruan Hongmei held a very ordinary-looking folder, but when they saw what was inside, their mouths dropped open in shock. Su Jin'er’s body trembled uncontrollably.
Inside the folder were not documents but photographs—one after another that made it hard for them to stand.
"How is this possible? Have you all been followed?"
All those photos featured Su Jin'er, Chu Feifan, Linyuan, and Zuo Yi; no matter where they were, there were pictures of them—even from that motel in town.
"How is this possible?" Her hands shook as she pulled out a photo taken from the side of Linyuan attempting to jump from the motel. Though dark, it still captured Linyuan's eerie yet stiff smile at that moment.
"Could it be that Boss installed cameras on us? But that doesn’t make sense!" Su Jin'er muttered to herself.
"We have been followed all along, but I remember everyone who appeared around us was different. The only ones who left an impression are almost all dead. Who could be following us and taking these photos?" Chu Feifan pondered while stroking his chin. Suddenly, a figure flashed through his mind—someone he had never really paid attention to because they were so honest that he had almost forgotten about them.
"I'm starting to figure out who he is," Chu Feifan's words made their hearts tense.
"We'll keep these photos, but since we finally got in here, we need to look through all the information before leaving." Su Jin'er felt an inexplicable tension; she was terrified, a fear she had never experienced before. Even when she was nearly killed, she hadn't felt this scared. Gradually, beads of sweat began to form on her forehead.
Su Jin'er's hands trembled as she finally understood what had happened five years ago and why the school had suddenly replaced all the teachers. But what could possibly cause all the teachers to act in unison?
After reviewing all the materials, she couldn't find the reason behind the incident. Exhausted, she leaned against the cabinet, tears streaming down her face.
"Jin'er, I finished looking through all the materials and didn't find anything useful. What's wrong? Why are you crying?" Ruan Hongmei squatted down to look at Su Jin'er, whose face was covered in tears. Hearing the commotion, Chu Feifan rushed over as well.
"I found the information and now I know what happened five years ago," Su Jin'er's voice trembled, her heart feeling as if it were being torn apart.
At that moment, footsteps echoed from outside; it was the administrator.
"You all saw it, didn't you?" The administrator's voice sounded strained, almost like a saw cutting through wood. Strangely enough, although her voice was unpleasant, it seemed like speaking took a great deal of effort for her.
"Do you know something?" Su Jin'er asked.
The administrator nodded.
Here's what happened: Five years ago, there was a new student named Li Mei from a rural background. She was exceptionally beautiful and many people at school liked her. However, she seemed only interested in studying and rejected all confessions from her classmates. This led many to believe that she looked down on others because of her beauty and academic success. In reality, Li Mei wasn't looking down on anyone; she was just very introverted. She had a good friend named Li Yiqing, but one day they had a falling out for reasons unknown. Li Yiqing was also a beautiful girl with many admirers. On that fateful day, Li Yiqing seemed to go mad and attacked Li Mei while she curled up in fear and did not fight back. Later, classmates said it was because Li Mei had stolen her fiancé, a boy named Li Ran. At that time, I was the librarian here and rarely inquired about school matters. However, one day, a person dressed in black with a mask suddenly stormed into the library and captured the administrator. When she asked what he wanted, he said nothing at all. Behind him followed all the school's teachers in a large group. They brought along an unconscious student—Li Mei—who appeared to have been drugged and was being supported by the teachers.
That day was during school holidays, so there were hardly any students around. They were taken to the school's dance rehearsal hall by the man in black. The administrator was drugged by him; that's why her voice was ruined and she could only watch helplessly as everything unfolded.
All the teachers seemed to be under control, staring blankly ahead as they awaited orders from the man in black. Li Mei was thrown onto the ground like a rag doll, and then he commanded one of the teachers to splash cold water on her to wake her up. After that, a horrifying scene unfolded: pointing at Li Mei, the man ordered all the teachers to line up and take turns assaulting her. There were around sixty or seventy teachers at that time while Li Mei was alone. She was raped to death; even when her lower body was left in tatters, they continued following orders until the last one finished—Li Mei had long since succumbed to the unbearable pain and passed away.
After hearing the administrator's words, Su Jin'er trembled even more. A strange scene appeared before her eyes: a line of people walked toward the frail girl with expressionless faces. The girl cried and begged for mercy, but no one paid attention to her, ultimately dying with her eyes wide open.
"Why are those teachers doing this?" Chu Feifan clenched his fists tightly.
"I don't know either. My voice was damaged by the black-clad men, so I couldn't speak. It seemed like those teachers lost their consciousness as if they were being controlled. After that, the principal replaced all the teachers. Strangely, all those replaced teachers died within five years."
"With so many people dead, didn't it attract the police's attention?" Ruan Hongmei asked.
"Of course it did, but their causes of death were all attributed to illness. The police found no evidence and couldn't locate the Killer. The black-clad man is the Killer, but after that incident, he seemed to have evaporated from the world."
"Why didn't you report it to the police?" Su Jin'er asked softly.
"After I woke up, I lost my memory and couldn't remember what had happened. My memory only started to return recently. I thought about reporting it after regaining my memory, but I was warned that I might be the next to die. However, being able to share this story feels like I've fulfilled a wish."
Leaving the archive room, they were still pondering what had just happened. The incident was truly unbelievable. What deep grudge did the Killer have against Li Mei to resort to such despicable means to kill her? And how did he manage to hide himself while bearing so many lives on his conscience? Did he not have nightmares at night?
