Who could be singing at this late hour?
She listened quietly to the source of the sound, feeling increasingly sad. It wasn't the song that was sorrowful, but the voice of the singer. Tears unknowingly slipped down her cheeks, and she was completely unaware of it. Strangely, the voice seemed to move closer to her. Before long, it felt as if the voice was right next to her ear. A strange smile unconsciously appeared on her lips, yet she remained oblivious.
Listening to that eerie song, Su Jin'er felt as if she had lost her soul. She slowly climbed up to the window, half of her body already hanging out, about to jump down. A peculiar smile remained on her face.
"Jin'er, what are you doing?" A voice suddenly came from behind her. Su Jin'er slowly turned around and gave Ruan Hongmei a strange smile.
"Jin'er, have you gone mad? This is the fourth floor!" Ruan Hongmei rushed over and forcefully pulled Su Jin'er back.
Falling to the ground brought Su Jin'er back to her senses. She stared blankly at Ruan Hongmei's worried face and then glanced at the window, looking confusedly at Ruan Hongmei in front of her.
"How did I end up on the ground?" she asked in bewilderment.
"Don't you remember?" Ruan Hongmei pointed at the window and said, "Just now, you were standing by the window ready to jump. If I hadn't pulled you back in time, you would have become a broken corpse."
Although Ruan Hongmei's words were harsh, they were indeed true.
Su Jin'er frowned. "Was I really going to jump? But I clearly remember hearing a woman singing."
"Singing? Hey! Are you out of your mind? Who sings in the middle of the night? Unless it's a ghost."
A ghost?
Su Jin'er thought for a moment; that voice seemed to have some kind of magic that gradually pulled her thoughts away from her mind. Could it be that because of that song she wanted to jump?
"What on earth is going on?" Ruan Hongmei held Su Jin'er's hand. "Your hand is so cold!"
"It's nothing; maybe it's just the wind." She stood up and brushed off the dirt from her clothes. "Thank you for saving me just now."
"Fortunately, I just got up to use the bathroom; otherwise, the consequences would have been unimaginable." Ruan Hongmei also stood up and walked toward the restroom.
Su Jin'er sat on the bed, reflecting on everything that had just happened. She felt a wave of fear wash over her. She remembered what had happened to Linyuan last time; she had also heard strange noises that made her want to jump off the building. Could it be that her situation was the same?
Ruan Hongmei yawned as she walked out of the restroom and looked at Su Jin'er, who was still sitting on the bed in a daze. "Alright, stop thinking about it. It's almost three o'clock; go to sleep!"
Su Jin'er smiled at her and then lay down. She thought she wouldn't be able to sleep, but surprisingly, she fell asleep quickly.
The next day, after a long absence from classes, Su Jin'er got up early and went to the classroom with Ruan Hongmei. They sat in the front row, and not long after, Chu Feifan arrived. However, Zuo Yi was nowhere to be seen beside him. Chu Feifan smiled at them and then sat down behind them.
"Jin'er, why did you suddenly decide not to go to your grandmother's house?" Chu Feifan asked as soon as he sat down.
Su Jin'er thought for a moment but couldn't come up with a reason, so she said, "I didn't feel very well yesterday, so I wanted to rest for another day."
Chu Feifan seemed half-convinced but said nothing further and lowered his head to look at his textbook.
At that moment, footsteps sounded again at the door. The heavy footsteps piqued everyone's curiosity as they looked up. The person who entered was none other than Cheng He, and the reason for his heavy steps was that he had someone on his back—Feng Qian.
Su Jin'er shot him a disdainful glance before returning to her book. Cheng He seemed eager to show everyone how close he was with Feng Qian and loudly asked, "Baby, we're at the door now; can you get down?"
Feng Qian giggled and then jumped off Cheng He's back, playfully kissing him on the cheek. The other students in the classroom were initially taken aback, but then the boys lost interest while some girls looked on sadly at the seemingly affectionate couple.
"Tch!" Ruan Hongmei scoffed, "What a playboy!"
Su Jin'er smiled and said, "Often, it's easy to be deceived by appearances."
Cheng He openly wrapped his arm around Feng Qian's shoulders as they walked into the classroom and sat down just one seat away from Su Jin'er. He positioned Feng Qian next to Su Jin'er so that he could easily turn his head and see her.
Su Jin'er frowned slightly but said nothing. However, Chu Feifan suddenly leaped from the back seat and sat down right next to Su Jin'er. This action caused many girls to gasp in surprise. Cheng He glared at him angrily but couldn't act out; this wasn't a deserted classroom, and he couldn't just sit on the floor and act unreasonable, after all, he was considered quite handsome himself.
Chu Feifan smiled victoriously at him, then propped his elbow on the table to block Cheng He's line of sight, preventing him from seeing Su Jin'er. He then winked at Su Jin'er, wearing a mischievous grin.
Soon, the teacher arrived, and the students quieted down to listen attentively to the lesson.
The morning passed quickly. During lunch, the three of them went to the cafeteria together. Just as they sat down and prepared to eat, Cheng He and Feng Qian approached them again.
"Hey! Can we sit here?" Cheng He asked with a cocky look.
"Sorry, we only welcome you here, not—dogs!" Chu Feifan stood up and said defiantly to Cheng He.
"You—" Cheng He pointed at him, seemingly about to get angry. He sighed, lowered his hand, and said, "I'm not going to argue with a petty person, but I've decided to sit here today."
"Suit yourself, but I won't take back what I just said."
The confrontation between the two handsome boys quickly drew the attention of those nearby, who watched them like it was a show. Standing next to Cheng He, Feng Qian looked pitifully at them, still unsure why they were arguing.
"Feifan, let it go; don't stoop to his level," Su Jin'er tugged at a corner of Chu Feifan's shirt. This casual gesture only angered Cheng He further.
With red eyes filled with rage, he glared at Chu Feifan as if he wanted to punch him in the face. However, the school had strict rules against violence on campus.
He pointed at Chu Feifan's nose and then dragged Feng Qian away from the cafeteria.
Chu Feifan sat back down and continued eating as if nothing had happened. Su Jin'er smiled and said, "Looks like this Feng Qian isn't just an ordinary fool!"
"Right!" Ruan Hongmei said with a mouthful of egg, speaking unclearly. "She doesn't even realize she's being played and is happily counting money for someone else!"
"By the way, what are we doing this afternoon?" Ruan Hongmei swallowed her egg and asked.
"This morning, Captain Xing called and said that no clues about Zuo Yi were found near where the jade pendant was discovered, so—"
Chu Feifan's following words were obvious; Zuo Yi had been missing for three days. If he had truly been captured by the Killer, the chances of him being alive were almost zero. The Killer was a ruthless demon who wouldn't care how many people he had killed.
"Then isn't Zuo Yi's situation very dangerous?" Ruan Hongmei exclaimed in surprise.
The only response was silence.
In the afternoon, they had no classes, so they originally planned to go to the Pavilion. However, a couple was sitting there sweetly, so they had no choice but to head to the library instead.
Chu Feifan mentioned that there was a file room in the library, which should also contain student records. Although the information in the file room was confidential, it was incomplete, so they decided to check it out; perhaps they would find something useful.
Su Jin'er still remembered that terrifying dream. Although it had been confirmed that what Xiaomei told her in the dream was true, she remained uncertain about whether Xiaomei's matters really existed. The fact that events from over seventy years ago were happening now was hard to believe. She hadn't told anyone about it because she didn't want them to worry.
There weren't many people reading in the library; it seemed that not many liked to read. Ruan Hongmei chewed gum, looking at the rows of bookshelves, and quietly asked Su Jin'er, "Where is the file room?"
Su Jin'er shook her head. She had searched the entire library and couldn't find any so-called file room. She really didn't know if such a place existed.
"I heard from Senior Sister that the library's file room is very hidden and rarely found by anyone. The files inside are very old, mostly from when the school was first established," Chu Feifan said while looking at the last row of bookshelves.
"Why build a file room so hidden? It sounds like there's something unspeakable going on," Ruan Hongmei said as she blew her gum but accidentally let it fly out. She hurriedly ran over to pick it up and threw it in the trash can.
"Students, why are you all crowding here? Aren't you here to read?" an elderly voice called out from behind them.
They jumped in surprise and turned to see where the voice came from. It was the librarian, a woman in her thirties. Although she wasn't very old, her voice had changed due to a delay in treatment for tonsillitis affecting her vocal cords.
"Um, we are looking for the archives to find some information," Ruan Hongmei said first.
"The archives are not open to just anyone. Do you have a certificate from the school?"
"A certificate? What kind of certificate?"
"You cannot enter without a certificate." After saying this, the administrator prepared to leave.
"Wait!" Chu Feifan suddenly said.
"What is it?"
"The recent murder case at the school, I believe you have heard about it. With something like this happening, I'm sure you wouldn't want to see it either. We just want to solve the case as soon as possible, so we would like to ask for your help."
The administrator turned around and looked at Chu Feifan coldly, saying, "Investigating is the police's job. Your job is to focus on your studies."
Her voice sounded devoid of any emotion: "Moreover, I advise you not to investigate further; it won't do you any good."
