No one answered, and only Su Jin'er’s voice echoed in the empty house. 0

Is there really no one? 0

It can't be; she clearly heard someone laughing. 0

"Hehe!" 0

Another chilling laugh followed. 0

"Who’s there? Come out, stop playing tricks," Su Jin'er boldly asked. 0

From the darkness, a figure slowly emerged. 0

"It's you? What are you doing here?" 0

The figure was none other than Professor Zhang. 0

"So, do you believe now that the story I told you is true?" 0

Su Jin'er squinted at him; his already ugly face appeared even more grotesque and terrifying under the light. 0

"How did you know I was here?" 0

"I guessed!" 0

"Guessed? I don't think this case has nothing to do with you! You're not just here to find those two who harmed you." 0

"You are very clever, but unfortunately, I don't think the Killer will let you go." 0

"Do you know who the Killer is?" 0

Professor Zhang shook his head and said, "How could I possibly know? If I did, do you think I would still be alive? The Killer is so smart; he has designed one trap after another, leaving even the captain of the criminal police team helpless. It's just a pity that this person has misused their intelligence." 0

Professor Zhang looked regretful. 0

"I want to know how much you really know about Xiaomei." 0

He shook his head again. "I actually don't know anything. As for telling you about Xiaomei, I just feel there might be some connection." 0

"I don't understand how events from seventy years ago could relate to now. Are you suggesting that her descendants are seeking revenge for her?" 0

"Of course not; how could she possibly have descendants?" 0

"You are the Killer, aren't you?" Su Jin'er suddenly said with a smile. 0

Professor Zhang was taken aback for a moment, then laughed and said, "How could I possibly be the Killer? Don't joke around." 0

"Whether I'm joking or not, you know very well, don't you? If you have the guts, come down with me and take a look!" Su Jin'er pointed to the basement. 0

"Alright!" 0

Professor Zhang walked over. He had somehow acquired a flashlight in his hand. Su Jin'er noticed that he was deliberately trying to conceal his walking posture; his leg seemed to have an issue, and he was making an effort to hide it. 0

She remembered that although Professor Zhang's face was ruined, his legs were intact and there were no disabilities. This meant that this person could not possibly be Professor Zhang. Did it imply that Professor Zhang had already been killed? Who was this person? Was he really the Killer? 0

Standing at the entrance of the basement, she cautiously stepped back, trying to keep as far away from the man in front of her as possible. She didn't know when he would strike and kill her. 0

"Are you wary of me?" He did not turn around, still gazing into the dark basement, his voice low. 0

"Why shouldn't I be? I'm not familiar with you," she replied without any hesitation. 0

Professor Zhang was taken aback by her directness but still smiled and said, "You're quite special!" 0

"While I really want to find the Killer, I'm not foolish enough to walk into danger myself, so I don't plan on going down there with you." 0

Professor Zhang tilted his head and asked, "Are you still doubting me?" 0

"Yes, I doubt everyone, including myself." 0

Su Jin'er’s words surprised Professor Zhang, but more than that, he admired her. He couldn't believe that such a beautiful girl could remain so calm in front of someone who might be a killer; even he might not be able to do that! 0

"If I were the Killer, I could kill you right now. But I'm not." 0

Su Jin'er frowned and looked at him with amusement. "So are you Professor Zhang?" 0

Professor Zhang was momentarily stunned by her question and could only smile as he replied, "You doubt that I'm Professor Zhang?" 0

Then he suddenly realized something and said, "I understand why you're doubting me; you're talking about this, right?" 0

He took a nail out of his shoe. 0

"Why do you carry this thing with you?" 0

Professor Zhang smiled and said, "It's nothing, just a habit." 0

A habit? Who would like to keep a nail in their shoe? And consider it a habit? That's quite strange! 0

Su Jin'er was terrified by the enemy's human skin masks time and again; she could no longer let her guard down and be deceived by those around her. 0

Professor Zhang continued with a smile, "Being cautious is a good thing. Don't easily trust those around you, because anyone could be a Killer, just like you said earlier—you even doubt yourself." 0

After saying this, he turned to leave but was stopped by Su Jin'er. 0

"I want to know if ghosts really exist in this world." 0

Professor Zhang paused for a moment without turning around and said, "Many things are in your heart. How you think is how you act. There are many things in this world that cannot be explained, but that doesn't mean they don't exist." 0

Professor Zhang's figure disappeared at the door of the laboratory. Su Jin'er stood there in a daze, pondering his words. Was he telling her that Xiao Mei's ghost really existed? Or was there something else going on? Why didn't he say it directly? Was his experience real? Why was he here at this time? 0

A series of questions flooded her mind. 0

At that moment, she suddenly heard stealthy footsteps outside the laboratory. The newcomer was carefully placing each step. Su Jin'er could even imagine how sneaky they looked. She reached out to close the basement door, then turned off the flashlight and hid in a dark corner, holding her breath as she waited for the person to enter. 0

The newcomer first poked their head inside, looked around, and upon seeing no one, cautiously stepped in with one foot, then half their body followed. After confirming that there was no one inside, they stood at the door, brushed off their clothes, and swaggered in. 0

Su Jin'er could tell that he was not the Professor Zhang who had just left, but someone else she seemed to have never seen before. It was dark, so she couldn't clearly see his face, but she was certain he was a man, nearly six feet tall. 0

After standing still for a few minutes, he lifted his foot and walked upstairs. He carefully took each step, as if afraid of disturbing the monsters hiding in the darkness. 0

Watching him go upstairs, Su Jin'er also stood up and followed him. She didn't know who he was or what he was doing here, but following him might lead her to some clues, even though she knew it was dangerous. 0

The man went straight to the third floor, and Su Jin'er followed him there. He stood in the hallway looking at the window on the right and then walked over step by step while Su Jin'er hid at the corner of the stairs, watching secretly. 0

"Come out! I know you're there." 0

The man suddenly spoke. 0

Su Jin'er was startled. How could he possibly know she was here? Just as she was considering whether to come out, another figure emerged from a room. 0

"Did you bring what I asked for?" the man said in a hoarse voice. 0

"I brought it." The man turned around, and the moonlight outside had somehow become particularly bright. Su Jin'er could see the man's face clearly; he was Cheng He, whom she had seen talking to Feng Qian during the day. 0

Cheng He held a ring in his hand, identical to the one he had given Feng Qian earlier, set with a red gemstone. 0

Upon seeing the ring, the man's eyes instantly lit up as he reached out to grab it, but Cheng He dodged away. 0

"Although I don't know what this ring is worth to you, I know it's important enough for you to kill so many people for it. However, you should understand that I won't just give it to you easily." 0

The man lowered his hand and asked, "What do you want?" 0

"I want you to study the entire process." 0

Su Jin'er did not understand what they were talking about, but Cheng He mentioned that he had killed many people for this ring. Who were those people he killed? Was it the Killer he was currently searching for? 0

"That's right, this ring is very important to me, but—" the man sneered, "it's impossible to study the process. You can study the final product. I know you want Su Jin'er, which is why I agreed not to kill her. However, you'd better not go too far." 0

Hearing her name mentioned, Su Jin'er felt a tight knot in her heart. He said Cheng He wanted her, which was why she was still alive. What were their true intentions? Who was this person? 0

"Hmph! You're quite full of yourself. I told you I would give you the ring, but you need to kill Chu Feifan. Why haven't you done it yet?" Cheng He asked angrily. 0

"The timing isn't right." 0

"Hmph! I think you're just incompetent! You clearly captured him; why let him go?" 0

"I said the timing isn't right," the man raised his voice as well. 0

Listening to their conversation sent chills down Su Jin'er's spine. They spoke of murder as if it were a common occurrence, while she found it terrifying. Who exactly was Cheng He? He had always known her and wanted someone to kill Chu Feifan. Aside from knowing that he and her grandmother were from the same village, she knew nothing else. The enemy was in the dark while she was in the light; she realized she was truly at the center of all this chaos. 0

Her body trembled uncontrollably, feeling as if it had suddenly lost all strength. She leaned weakly against the cold wall, feeling that her body temperature was almost the same as that of the wall. 0

"Give me the ring, and I will fulfill your request. I will make Su Jin'er willingly be your girlfriend," the man said coldly, his voice as hard and icy as ice itself, each word piercing Su Jin'er's heart like a shard of ice. 0

"If you want the ring, wait until my request is fulfilled." 0

"You better not push your luck. You know my patience is limited." 0

Cheng He calmly replied, "I know you want to kill me and take the ring easily, but let me tell you the truth: this ring is fake. The real one is hidden away, and no one knows where it is except for me. So if you want to kill me, I advise you to think twice." 0

Cheng He spoke with confidence. 0

"Are you threatening me?" 0

"Yes!" 0

"Alright, you have guts!" 0

Cheng He smiled proudly and said, "I know how ruthless you can be. You wouldn't hesitate to kill someone who is useless to you, just like Li Yiqian. Of course, I won't be as foolish as her. Once you're done, I'll naturally tell you where the ring is." 0

Cheng He's words made the man tremble with anger, but he couldn't do anything about it. He snorted heavily and then turned to walk back into the room he had come from. 0
