The woman's screams continued as Su Jin'er sat on the steps, hugging her knees, tears streaming down her face, yet she lacked the courage to look up at what was happening before her.
After an unknown amount of time, the woman's screams ceased. Su Jin'er slowly lifted her head to see the woman's bloodied, skinless face, blood dripping from it, yet she was smiling—a terrifying and gruesome smile.
"You will all get your comeuppance; you will all get your comeuppance," the woman said before suddenly standing up and lunging onto the knife held by a man.
The woman's body slowly fell, and the man with the knife laughed, saying, "Hmph! That saves us the trouble of killing her."
Another man suddenly became frightened and trembled as he asked, "Do you think she will really turn into a Vengeful Spirit?"
The man shot him a glare and replied, "Turn into a Vengeful Spirit! Hmph! I'm just waiting for her to become one! When night falls, we will bury her body in the graveyard behind."
"Aren't you afraid someone will discover she's missing?"
"What if they do? She has no family; no one will care. As long as we firmly say we haven't seen her, it will be fine. They have no evidence."
"Did you see it all?"
A cold voice suddenly rang out from behind. Su Jin'er jumped up in shock, staring fearfully at the woman behind her.
"Are you Xiao Mei?"
"Hmph! You are indeed clever. However, this case you are dealing with is too complicated; otherwise, you should have solved it quickly."
"What do you know? Tell me," Su Jin'er asked in surprise, having forgotten her fear at that moment.
"I know nothing. My only purpose for existing is to seek revenge."
Su Jin'er frowned at her and said, "It's been over seventy years. Haven't you forgotten your hatred yet?"
Xiao Mei let out a cold laugh and replied, "You saw what they did to me. How can you expect me to forgive? If someone had come to save me back then, I wouldn't have... Never mind. I showed you all of this because I need your help with something."
Su Jin'er looked at her in confusion.
"I died here, and I've been unable to find my body, so I want someone to help me locate it."
Su Jin'er suddenly found it amusing. She must be dreaming! In this dream, she was encountering the ghost of someone who had died over seventy years ago, asking her to help find a body. She chuckled helplessly; it really was just a dream.
Seeing that Su Jin'er did not respond, the woman assumed she was rejecting her request and suddenly became fierce. A gust of cold wind blew in, causing her hair to fly wildly.
Su Jin'er covered her eyes and peered through her fingers at the woman, whose skin began to peel away, leaving only the whites of her eyes visible. Su Jin'er shouted, "Fine! I promise I'll help you."
The wind abruptly stopped, and Su Jin'er sighed in relief. No wonder Grandma said it's best not to provoke those with great resentment after they die. This woman had been dead for over seventy years; her resentment must be even stronger!
Thank goodness it was just a dream!
She silently rejoiced.
"You are correct; you are indeed dreaming. I chose to meet you in your dream because I was afraid of scaring you in reality, and then no one would help me find my body," Xiao Mei said as she burst into laughter.
She looked at the astonished Su Jin'er and said with wide eyes, "I will make you believe that I truly exist."
Is it really there? Su Jin'er felt incredulous.
After the woman finished speaking, she laughed and suddenly disappeared. Su Jin'er had just been feeling sad about the woman's plight! Just as Su Jin'er was about to breathe a sigh of relief, the woman's voice came again: "You have one day. If you can't find it within a day, I will kill everyone."
Su Jin'er was shocked.
One day?
"Hey! You have to tell me where your body is!" Su Jin'er had completely forgotten her fear and even found it amusing. However, if what happened next unfolded, she certainly wouldn't find it funny anymore.
Su Jin'er slowly opened her eyes. It was already dark outside. She sat up, recalling the dream she just had and found it amusing; perhaps she had been overthinking, which led to the dream. However, dreaming about Xiao Mei was a bit unbelievable, and what was stranger was how real the dream felt.
She felt a bit hungry and got out of bed to find something to eat. As she accidentally brushed against her pillow, a sudden icy sensation made her shiver.
The pillow was soaked with a large patch of wetness.
She shook her head, laughing at herself for being overly sentimental.
Moonlight streamed in through the window, casting a hazy glow in the dormitory. Taking advantage of the moonlight, Su Jin'er tried to turn on the light but accidentally slipped and nearly fell to the ground. Fortunately, she managed to grab onto the bed beside her.
Standing upright, she patted her chest. What was so slippery? She avoided that spot on the floor and walked over to the door to turn on the light.
She covered her eyes with her hand and waited for her eyes to adjust to the brightness before removing it. As soon as she did, she immediately widened her eyes.
What had almost caused her to slip earlier was nothing other than a pool of bright red blood.
Is there really such a thing as ghosts in this world?
She recalled everything she had seen in her dream, along with the last words of Xiao Mei.
Su Jin'er walked into the bathroom, took out a used towel, and filled a basin with water to clean up the bloodstains on the floor. She didn't believe that Xiao Mei's ghost truly existed; these bloodstains must be someone's prank. Only a few people from their dorm had the keys, and Du Xiaonan's key had been handed over to the dorm supervisor after her death. Li Yiqian's key was probably still at the police station, and as for Linyuan's, she had always kept it with her. If she guessed correctly, her key should still be in her own locker. She wiped while thinking.
Suddenly, it occurred to her that if her dream was real, then the Old Laboratory Building must have a basement. The only way to prove whether her dream was true was to go to the Old Laboratory.
With that thought in mind, she hurriedly cleaned the floor and then found some instant noodles she had bought with Linyuan before. She ate a little and grabbed a flashlight before heading downstairs. She didn't call anyone; if her dream was false, at least she would be the only one who knew. But if it was true, what should she do? Should she believe Xiao Mei's words and help her find her body?
It was already nine o'clock, and because the weather had warmed up, some couples were still out on dates. Su Jin'er walked through the woods along the path to the Old Laboratory, encountering a few students along the way. They looked at her strangely; after Xu Lingling's suicide incident, many people knew about Su Jin'er. Although they had heard her name before, they had never seen her in person. This incident inadvertently made her a celebrity at school, though she did not want to be one.
Seeing the strange looks from the students, Su Jin'er smiled helplessly. It was easy to guess what they were thinking. The expressions of those boys changed from awe to fear as they looked at Su Jin'er. She noticed that almost all the students knew that three out of four people in their dorm had died, leaving only Su Jin'er alive. Some regarded her as a Killer, while others saw her as a ghost. All the students avoided her; no one wanted to associate with her anymore.
Soon, she arrived at the Old Laboratory. Under the moonlight, it resembled a monster waiting for its prey to walk right into its mouth. In the pitch-black night, anything could happen; darkness evoked feelings of death and fear. In this boundless darkness, one could not know what lurked in hidden corners, ready to pounce unexpectedly and tear them apart. In truth, people were not afraid of the night itself but of the unknown things concealed within it—things they could neither see nor feel.
The unknown is the most terrifying!
Su Jin'er thought.
Just like people's fear of ghosts, many inexplicable events occur in this world that leave people baffled. These events are gradually magnified in people's minds until they become supernatural occurrences or ghostly murders. Clever humans exploit common psychological fears to create a series of murder cases for which evidence cannot be easily found. In such situations, fear causes people to retreat, leading to cases remaining unsolved.
She could only say that those who orchestrated these events were incredibly clever; how smart must this opponent be if even the well-informed Captain Xing couldn't handle it?
Looking at the closed door of the Old Laboratory, Su Jin'er took a deep breath. Regardless of whether any of this was true or not, she needed to verify it herself. She had to stop the Killer from killing again. As for Xiao Mei's death, perhaps there really was something behind it; however, she simply couldn't believe that a deceased person could turn into a ghost and commit murder.
She pushed the door open, and as before, a cold wind rushed in, carrying a strange smell that invaded Su Jin'er's nostrils. She coughed lightly a few times and covered her nose as she stepped inside. It was pitch dark inside, with only the faint yellow light from the lamp in her hand illuminating the space. She didn't look around; although she found the smell odd, she remembered her purpose for coming here. More importantly, she had often been interrupted by clues that appeared midway in the past, leading them to take many detours. This time, she was determined to complete her objective before worrying about anything else.
She walked to the wall, clearly recalling the position of the button in her mind. Without much effort, she found it and pressed it gently. Her heart began to race with anxiety. In truth, she felt conflicted; part of her hoped there was a basement, while another part wished there wasn't. After a series of clanking sounds, the wall really moved aside just as it had in her dream.
She stared at this scene in terror but dared not step inside.
Was the dream real?
"Hah!"
A sudden cold laugh echoed from behind her, sending chills down Su Jin'er's spine and causing her heart to race even faster. She could clearly hear the sound of her own heartbeat.
"Who?"
