Su Jin'er peeked inside, and it was pitch black. She instinctively shrank her neck. It seemed strange to her; the data room had windows, but for some reason, the curtains were always drawn, preventing sunlight from coming in. Didn't they worry about things inside getting moldy?
Chu Feifan had already gone in.
With a snap—
Chu Feifan turned on the light. The dim yellow glow did not dispel the darkness in the room; instead, it created a hazy feeling.
For some reason, every time she entered the data room, she felt oppressed and struggled to breathe, as if she suddenly had asthma. She chuckled at herself for thinking of asthma!
"Jin'er, I found their information," Chu Feifan's voice came from behind a cabinet.
Chu Feifan emerged holding a stack of documents.
Although they didn't know the names of those two people, the documents had their photos. Su Jin'er took the documents and saw the photo of a boy.
The boy's name was Cheng He, and he studied at Gao Hu. Feng Qian, like Su Jin'er, was in the clinical medicine department, but Su Jin'er was in Class One while Feng Qian was in Class Two.
Su Jin'er looked at Cheng He's home address with some surprise.
"What's wrong? Is something off?"
"This Cheng He is actually from the same village as my grandmother."
However, looking at this face, she had no impression at all. In her memory, the children from there were all covered in mud; she didn't remember any handsome boys like this.
"Do you know him?"
Su Jin'er shook her head. "No, I've never seen him." She smiled and continued, "Maybe it's because we've all grown up and changed so much that I don't recognize him!"
Chu Feifan nodded, "This Feng Qian is indeed from the countryside and is from the same village as Feng Liang. If we want to know their true relationship, we need to find someone from their village; just listening to her alone won't suffice."
"Is that all?"
"Yes, that should be it! After becoming the Student Council Chairman, I realized that this resource room is not accessible even to the Student Council Chairman without permission. There used to be a manager here, but he retired due to old age and reportedly passed away last year."
Su Jin'er nodded and continued looking at the information in her hands. In fact, there was very little data; she felt inexplicably interested in a boy named Cheng He because she knew he was from the same village as her grandmother.
Thinking of this, she suddenly missed her grandmother very much. It had been a year since she last visited her, and she wondered how she was doing.
"If Cheng He really is from my grandmother's village, I think he should know me."
Chu Feifan asked in surprise, "Why?"
"Because I often went to my grandmother's house to play when I was little, and the kids in the village would come to play with me, so they should still remember me," Su Jin'er said confidently. She believed that her greatest pride was her good rapport with others.
Chu Feifan seemed a bit jealous. He looked at Su Jin'er with dissatisfaction and said, "So you have good relationships with everyone!"
Seeing Chu Feifan's cute pout, she teased him, "Are you jealous?"
Chu Feifan's face turned red instantly. He had never felt jealous before, but seeing Su Jin'er looking at Cheng He's photo made him feel sour inside.
"Alright, I just think he looks familiar and is related to the case we are investigating, so I care a bit. Don't overthink it!" Su Jin'er said while affectionately ruffling Chu Feifan's hair.
Chu Feifan looked at her in surprise. Suddenly, he hugged her tightly and said, "Jin'er, I really like you. It's not just because you're beautiful; there's something strangely magical about you that I can't resist. So no matter what happens, please don't leave me, okay?"
Su Jin'er was taken aback by Chu Feifan's sudden confession. She thought of Linyuan and Zuo Yi and felt that it was truly not easy for two people to be together. She hugged Chu Feifan back and agreed.
The figures of the two merged into a single shadow on the ground, but they did not notice that another strange shadow was slowly approaching them, gradually blending with their own, even though there was no one else present beside them.
"Feifan, you're holding me too tightly," Su Jin'er said with some difficulty.
Chu Feifan did not move, still holding her tightly. Su Jin'er felt as if her bones were about to break, and the sound of Chu Feifan's breathing had become much heavier.
"Feifan, what's wrong?" Su Jin'er pushed him hard. After he and she separated slightly, Su Jin'er bent down and slipped out from under his arm, gasping for air.
Chu Feifan's body remained in the same position, only slowly and stiffly turning to face Su Jin'er.
"Feifan, what's wrong?" Su Jin'er asked again. Chu Feifan still did not respond, his gaze fixed on Su Jin'er, yet it seemed as if he was not really looking at her; the whites of his eyes had turned red.
Su Jin'er took a step back in terror.
This was not Chu Feifan at all.
"Who are you?" she asked bravely, although she knew he would not answer.
Chu Feifan's eyes stared rigidly at her; his gaze sent chills down Su Jin'er's spine.
"Feifan, it's me, Jin'er!"
Chu Feifan's body trembled slightly; although it was a small movement, Su Jin'er noticed it.
"You can hear me, right?"
Chu Feifan slowly nodded.
"Then let me ask you something. Just nod if it's yes, and shake your head if it's no, okay?"
Chu Feifan nodded again.
"Can you not control your body?"
Chu Feifan nodded.
"Are you feeling very sad?"
He nodded again.
"Do you know what happened to you?"
He shook his head.
Su Jin'er felt that at this moment, Chu Feifan was like a child. His eyes were clearly pleading for help, but how could she save him? She had no idea why he suddenly became like this.
Her grandmother had once said that people with weak constitutions are prone to attracting unclean things, and her own constitution was indeed weak, making her susceptible to such things. Therefore, her grandmother had invited a master to help her. After examining her, the master gave her a string of prayer beads, instructing her to carry them with her at all times, even when bathing. She had never taken them off, even though she had always been reluctant to believe in demons. Nevertheless, she obediently kept the beads with her, telling herself they were a gift from her grandmother. Now, for some reason, she felt that Chu Feifan must have encountered something unclean, so she quickly took off the bracelet and put it on Chu Feifan's wrist.
Chu Feifan's body jolted violently before going limp and collapsing. Su Jin'er watched in astonishment as a wisp of black smoke emerged from Chu Feifan's body. Although it was faint, she still saw it.
Chu Feifan leaned against Su Jin'er as he slowly regained consciousness. When he opened his eyes, he saw Su Jin'er's pale face anxiously looking at him.
He rubbed his forehead and said, "I'm sorry, I don't know why this happened."
"Do you know what happened?"
"Yes, I can hear you speaking, but I can't control my own body. It feels like something is fighting me for control. I'm trying really hard to respond to you; it's so exhausting!"
At this moment, Su Jin'er noticed the fine beads of sweat on Chu Feifan's forehead.
"This place is really strange; we should leave!"
Su Jin'er helped Chu Feifan stand up and walked toward the door.
They didn't notice that behind them, a wisp of black smoke slowly coalesced into a humanoid form, grinning eerily at their departing backs. The figure hunched over, its gaze maliciously fixed on them.
Stepping out of the data room, Su Jin'er and Chu Feifan both took a deep breath. Having encountered two bizarre incidents during their visits to the data room, they were filled with fear yet also curiosity about why such strange things were happening there. What had occurred in this place?
One question after another surfaced in their minds.
The sun continued to hang quietly in the sky, emitting a blinding light. Su Jin'er looked up, squinting at the sun, and felt her fear gradually dissipate under its rays. The strange chill that had enveloped her also faded away, and she smiled contentedly.
However, Chu Feifan's brow furrowed deeper. This incident reminded him of something that could cost him his life. He glanced at Su Jin'er, who was smiling at the sunlight, and hesitated about whether he should tell her.
Looking at the Buddhist beads on his wrist, he recalled his necklace.
"Jin'er, here, take this back." Chu Feifan removed the beads and handed them to Su Jin'er.
Su Jin'er did not refuse; she smiled as she accepted them and then put them on her wrist, saying, "It seems like you have something to tell me?"
Her smile was warm, just like the sunlight at that moment.
"I—" He didn't know how to say it. If he told her that he might die, what would her reaction be?
"I don't like my mother-in-law! Damn it!" Su Jin'er pouted.
"If one day I die, you must live well."
Su Jin'er looked at his serious expression, paused for a moment, and then suddenly laughed, "Silly, when we grow old, we will both die. Why are you suddenly so sentimental?"
Su Jin'er's reaction was unexpected for Chu Feifan. However, the fact that she could laugh so happily indicated that she was fine. Although he felt relieved in his heart, there was still a hint of disappointment.
In fact, he did not know that Su Jin'er also had something to hide from him.
"By the way, where is Zuo Yi?" Su Jin'er suddenly changed the topic as they walked down the stairs.
"He just went back to the dormitory. He should still be waiting for us there!"
Su Jin'er nodded and fell silent. For a moment, neither of them spoke, each lost in their own thoughts.
