Su Jin'er nodded. She knew that Linyuan treated her so well, and she would definitely ensure that she found the final Killer soon. Although the Killer who killed Linyuan was already dead, her revenge had not yet been fulfilled. The person who had been lurking in the shadows must be watching their case with a smirk, so she would not let him enjoy his triumph for too long. She vowed to catch him.
"Feifan, you and Zuo Yi take Jin'er back to the dormitory. I'll go find him alone," Captain Xing said.
"Okay!" Su Jin'er did not object. Last time they went, Professor Zhang didn't say anything. This time, with Captain Xing going alone, perhaps he would be more willing to speak. A professor wouldn't want to say anything that might affect his reputation in front of his students.
After returning to school, Su Jin'er entered her dormitory. Opening the door and seeing the empty room made her heart feel just as empty. The once lively dormitory was now left with only her after just one day. She lay on her bed, completely relaxed physically, but her heart felt heavy. Without Linyuan, even the air around her turned cold. Closing her eyes, tears streamed down her cheeks and disappeared into her hair. A bitter taste filled her mouth. In truth, she was filled with fear—fear of the darkness, fear of the unknown, and even fear of this world and human nature. Having laughed so much before, she had never witnessed the death of those close to her. Although her grandfather had passed away, she was just an infant when it happened and did not see him leave this world. Now, suddenly witnessing so many deaths, including that of her best friend, who could understand her feelings?
Captain Xing stood in front of Professor Zhang's dormitory, straightening his clothes before gently knocking on the door. After a long while, a slow voice came from inside, followed by an old and hoarse voice asking, "Who is it?"
"I'm a police officer here to ask you some questions," Captain Xing replied.
The person inside seemed taken aback for a moment but then slowly opened the door. When Captain Xing saw the face behind the door, even he—who had seen many things—was startled.
"Sorry if my face scared you."
Captain Xing cleared his throat lightly and regained his composure before saying, "It's fine. May I come in to talk?"
Professor Zhang did not answer but opened the door a bit wider to indicate he could enter.
Captain Xing stepped into the room; it was dark inside except for a candle lit on the desk. The candlelight illuminated Professor Zhang's grotesque face, making it appear even more terrifying.
Captain Xing found a chair to sit on; it was the only place to sit in the room besides the bed. Professor Zhang sat on the bed and asked, "What do you need me for?"
"It's like this: you should have heard about the recent murder case at school. Our investigation suggests that this case may be related to events from five years ago, and you're currently the only teacher who knows about those events. So I would like you to tell me everything you know."
Upon hearing Captain Xing's words, Professor Zhang's body stiffened slightly. A smile appeared on his ugly face, but it only made him look more horrifying.
"I've long forgotten what happened five years ago, so I'm sorry, but I can't help you." Professor Zhang's voice was not loud, but it was as grating as a saw.
Captain Xing noticed a large scar near his Adam's apple and began to suspect that the scar on his face might be related to the events from five years ago.
"Since that's the case, I won't ask further. However, I'm curious—though I know it's quite presumptuous to ask—about your face..."
"Oh! It's just that when I was a child, I was too mischievous and burned myself while playing with fire, which is why it looks like this now," he said with a mocking smile.
Playing with fire?
Captain Xing felt a bit skeptical. He paid close attention to Professor Zhang's facial expressions as he spoke. When he mentioned his childhood, the corner of his mouth twitched slightly. Although it was a minor expression, almost imperceptible, it was enough for Captain Xing.
"Do you really not remember anything about what happened five years ago?" Captain Xing asked again.
"As one gets older, memory fades. Nothing particularly memorable happened five years ago, so I don't recall," Professor Zhang replied in a hoarse voice.
"Alright then! Here's my business card. Please remember to call me if you think of anything," Captain Xing said as he placed the card on the desk and stood up to leave.
"Okay, take care!"
As Captain Xing walked out of the dormitory building, he looked up at the dark room before leaving. Inside lived an ugly old man who hid away from everyone in the darkness.
What really happened five years ago?
He even suspected that whatever transpired back then was the reason for this man living in such darkness, leading a life devoid of sunlight.
Two female students walked past him, glancing at him as if they were saying something, their faces showing shy smiles.
Captain Xing scratched his head a bit awkwardly and turned to leave, but the two girls looked at his back, and one of them shyly said, "He is handsome, but he's also an old man. How can he compare to our Professor Zhang?"
"Come on, Professor Zhang is already a thing of the past. Have you forgotten how terrifying he looks now? Just thinking about it gives me chills," the other girl replied.
Captain Xing stopped in his tracks and turned to look at them.
The two girls were startled by his sudden turn and prepared to leave, but then they heard the man speak up.
"Excuse me, wait a moment!" Captain Xing approached them and asked.
"W-what is it?"
The girls were startled but still tried to act calm.
"Oh! I'm a police officer and I want to ask you some questions."
"Police officer?"
The two girls exclaimed!
"Yes! The Professor Zhang you mentioned earlier, is he the one living above, Professor Zhang?"
Upon hearing that he was asking about Professor Zhang, the girl was no longer afraid. A bolder girl said, "Yes! Do you need to find him?"
"It's like this. I heard you all say that he used to be very handsome, but why has he changed to this state now?"
"Actually, we don't know either. We just heard from our Senior Sister that he was a very handsome man and was the object of many girls' crushes in our school. But we don't know what happened for him to become like this."
"You don't know what happened?"
"Yes, but it seems he was burned in a fire. The specifics, we don't know."
Captain Xing thought for a moment and said, "Well, thank you! This is my business card. If you remember anything, please give me a call."
The girl nodded and took the business card.
Captain Xing turned and walked toward the Girls' Dormitory, his mind still flashing with the professor's terrifying face.
