The sky gradually brightened, and early-rising students were already jogging around the campus. Su Jin'er called Linyuan's parents on her phone, while Captain Xing also notified the police, who were now rushing to the scene.
Chu Feifan held his head in his hands. He didn't understand why he had returned home. When he woke up in his own room, his heart had not been at peace for a moment. He thought this case would be resolved quickly, but it seemed to be getting more complicated. What had happened to his brother during those years he went missing? What kind of person could make him choose to commit suicide rather than reveal the mastermind behind it?
Su Jin'er looked at the pained Chu Feifan; she was no stranger to suffering herself. Her best friend was dead, and her heart was shattered to the point that she had forgotten what pain felt like. Now, she couldn't even bear to look at Linyuan's body. Although Zhang Junsheng was already dead, she had no idea if the person wearing the human skin mask who killed Linyuan was indeed Chu Feifan.
Suddenly, a question popped into her mind.
Why did they wear masks that looked exactly like Chu Feifan? Could it be that all these cases were related to him?
She stared incredulously at Chu Feifan, who still held his head in his hands. A bold and terrifying thought crossed her mind: could it be that the Killer was none other than Chu Feifan?
As if sensing her gaze, Chu Feifan lifted his head.
Su Jin'er went from suspicion to shock because Chu Feifan's face was streaked with tears.
"Jin'er, you—you're doubting me, aren't you?" Chu Feifan asked, choking on his words.
Su Jin'er didn't respond. He forced a bitter smile and said, "I doubt myself too. Is it possible that I have some illness and killed them without knowing? The person you saw wearing a mask that looks just like me might actually be me."
Chu Feifan's words astonished everyone. Su Jin'er looked at him in disbelief; although she suspected him, she never imagined he could have killed them without being aware of it. Or perhaps Chu Feifan was lying—pretending not to know.
Seeing Su Jin'er's unfamiliar gaze upon him, Chu Feifan suddenly laughed—a painful laugh—as tears streamed down his face. He didn't even know what he had done or if the person who looked exactly like him in that strange villa truly existed.
Su Jin'er approached him and took his hand, saying, "Do you not even believe in yourself anymore? Just a moment ago, I doubted you, but I haven't figured out what your motive could be."
Chu Feifan suddenly grasped Su Jin'er’s hand tightly and said, “Jin'er, you have to believe me, I didn’t kill anyone.”
“We didn’t say you did, so please don’t be nervous. What’s wrong with you?” Su Jin'er asked, looking at his agitated expression with confusion.
Chu Feifan gazed into her calm eyes and gradually calmed down himself. He turned his head and looked at the ground as he said, “I don’t know either. Ever since I woke up, there has been a voice in my head directing me, and I can’t control it at all.”
Captain Xing approached and looked at Chu Feifan’s pained expression. “You say there’s a voice in your head? Can you tell us everything that happened after you escaped from home?”
Chu Feifan wiped away his tears and gave an apologetic smile to Su Jin'er. “I’m sorry for making you worry.”
His face remained handsome, and his smile almost dimmed the sunlight.
Just as he was about to speak, Jiang Jie arrived with a team of people. By this time, many students were entering and exiting the school gate, forcing them to hide in the small grove to avoid being seen.
As soon as Jiang Jie arrived, Linyuan's parents also showed up. Su Jin'er felt almost too scared to face them.
“Jin'er! Where is Xiaoyuan?” Linyuan's father supported his mother as they approached. Upon seeing them, Su Jin'er could no longer hold back her tears.
“Uncle, Auntie, I’m so sorry. It’s my fault for not taking care of Xiaoyuan,” Su Jin'er cried.
“Child, tell Uncle what exactly happened?” Uncle Lin asked as he held onto Su Jin'er. Meanwhile, Aunt Lin stumbled over to Zuo Yi, looking at Linyuan's body covered by Su Jin'er's clothing.
Su Jin'er glanced at Captain Xing; he signaled her not to disclose anything about the case. Uncle Lin noticed her sadness and patted her shoulder. “If you can’t say it, then don’t worry about it!”
Uncle Lin staggered toward Linyuan's side; it was as if they had suddenly aged ten years. Their pain was magnified countless times, and she could barely stand.
Captain Xing quietly instructed Jiang Jie for a moment before turning to Su Jin'er and said, "Let Jiang Jie take them back to the station first. Linyuan's body can't be left here for too long."
Su Jin'er nodded, her mind filled with questions that felt like a tangled mess, unable to sort out any clues, not even knowing when these cases had started.
"Uncle, Auntie, I'm sorry, it's my fault. If it weren't for me, Xiaoyuan wouldn't have died. I caused his death." Zuo Yi, who had been silent, suddenly knelt on the ground and cried.
Dad Lin and Mom Lin looked at the tearful boy kneeling on the ground in confusion, then turned to Su Jin'er with questioning eyes.
Su Jin'er looked at Zuo Yi on the ground and said, "Let him speak for himself!"
Unbeknownst to her, her words, which held no malice, led them to mistakenly believe that Zuo Yi was responsible for their daughter's death. Their previously confused expressions instantly transformed into anger.
Smack—
Before they could react, Mom Lin slapped Zuo Yi across the face.
"Auntie—"
Su Jin'er never expected Mom Lin would strike someone. She rushed over and grabbed her hand, saying, "Auntie, you misunderstood. Xiaoyuan's death wasn't his fault."
"Xiaowan! You're being too impulsive!" Dad Lin sighed.
"Uncle, Auntie, we can't leave Xiaoyuan's body here any longer. Let the police take it away! You should go home too! I promise I will find the Killer and avenge Xiaoyuan," she said firmly.
Mom Lin glanced at Zuo Yi still kneeling on the ground and said, "I'm sorry, child. I was too impulsive just now, but I hope you can understand a mother's heart."
"Zuo Yi, I know you are very sad, so I ask you to join them at the meeting!" Su Jin'er said with difficulty.
While they were talking, Jiang Jie and the others had already lifted Linyuan's body onto the vehicle. Dad Lin and Mom Lin also got into the car, while Su Jin'er stood behind it, taking one last look at Linyuan's lifeless face before turning away in sorrow.
"Linyuan, my best friend, please bless us from there to find the Killer soon."
She said in her heart.
Watching the car leave, Su Jin'er sat down on the ground in despair, her legs trembling. She was terrified, a fear she had never experienced before.
"Jin'er—"
Chu Feifan walked over. He had been thinking about what happened after he escaped, but now he had sorted out his thoughts and found the courage to face everything. Even if this case was committed without his knowledge, he would still confess.
"Feifan, I believe you didn't do this. I remember the photo I saw in the pink room at the villa; I found the same photo at the village chief's house." She took out that photo from her pocket.
"The pink room?" Chu Feifan asked in surprise.
"Yes, the person who was with me back then might not have been you, but I still remember everything about that room."
"Wasn't the entire room pink, even the walls?"
This time it was Su Jin'er's turn to be surprised: "How did you know? Could that person really be you?"
"No, no, it's not that. I didn't see a pink room at the villa, but I have seen the pink room you're talking about."
"Have you seen it?"
Captain Xing and Jiang Jie approached upon hearing their conversation.
"Yes, I saw it in my house. There is a forbidden room in my home that my father never allows us to open. However, when I was young, I secretly opened it just to take a glance, but my father caught me. He was very angry and punished me by making me kneel outside for a day. Even though I only saw it for a moment, I deeply remember that room because it was entirely pink, and the impression it left on me was incredibly strong."
"In your house?" Captain Xing handed the notebook he had been using to keep track of things to Jiang Jie, who was now writing something in it.
"Could this case be related to your father?" Su Jin'er boldly suggested.
"If that's the case, it would explain why I woke up in my own home."
