Su Jin'er picked up the diary, flipping through it in disbelief. Just as Linyuan had said, aside from the few chapters they had just read, there were no more words on the pages.
"How could this be?" Linyuan said, confused, thinking there would be many clues.
"It can't be. I believe he was killed to leave clues here; maybe we arrived too late."
"Are you saying that the Killer got to the useful clues before us and left us with a useless diary? That would be so unfortunate!"
"Not necessarily. Perhaps he was afraid of being discovered by the Killer, so he used some method to hide them." Captain Xing put away the diary and stood up. He looked at the tree he had observed earlier and said, "You all go wait in the car for me. I'll be there shortly."
They nodded and walked towards the car. Su Jin'er felt that something was off but couldn't quite put her finger on it. Although Zhang Junsheng was a boy, his diary revealed his delicate emotions, and he loved his brother very much. He even bore the reputation of being a bad kid for his brother's sake, not caring if his parents disliked him. But what could have caused him to sacrifice so much?
In this world, everything has a cause and effect; to understand Zhang Junsheng's death, they must first uncover Zhang Jun's cause of death.
But where was Zhang Junsheng from? She remembered that they seemed to have investigated that.
Linyuan lowered her head and suddenly whispered, "Jin'er, I'm really worried about Zuo Yi. Aren't you worried about Chu Feifan?"
Su Jin'er's heart jolted. How could she not be worried? It's just that since he went missing, there hasn't been a single clue, and she didn't know where to start looking.
"Of course I'm worried; it's just that I don't know how to search for him and I dare not think about it. I don't know what I would do if something happened to him!"
Linyuan remained silent, staring blankly at the sky. This morning, she had been so focused on Su Jin'er's safety that she forgot Zuo Yi might also be in danger. She should have stopped him back then.
A sudden cold wind blew through, causing Su Jin'er to shiver involuntarily. She looked up at the sun still hanging high in the sky; how could such a chilling wind blow out of nowhere?
Is it just her illusion?
She turned to look at Linyuan, who was also looking at her with curiosity.
"Do you feel it too?"
Linyuan nodded.
"This forest is really strange!" Su Jin'er opened the car door and got in, followed by Linyuan.
"I remember that Zhang Junsheng seemed to have been scared to death, and then he was hung up on a tree," Linyuan said, pinching her chin with her right hand's index finger and thumb.
"No, he was hanged. Don't you remember how long his tongue was when he stuck it out?"
Linyuan pouted; she clearly remembered how terrifying Zhang Junsheng's death was.
"Where is Captain Xing? Why hasn't he come yet?" Linyuan rolled down the car window and looked outside.
Su Jin'er also rolled down her window to look outside. The air inside the car suddenly became oppressive, making it hard to breathe.
However, rolling down the window did not alleviate the oppressive atmosphere; instead, it made her feel even colder, as if a cold wind was drilling into her neck, causing her to shiver all over.
"Jin'er, do you... do you feel cold?" Linyuan stuttered, her teeth chattering.
"It’s really cold, but it shouldn’t be!" The sun was still high in the sky, and the sunlight was glaring.
Inside the car, it felt as if the air conditioning was turned up to the max, with cold winds blowing that made them shiver uncontrollably.
"It’s really cold; let’s get out of the car!" Linyuan hugged her shoulders, trembling.
Su Jin'er reached for the car door, but no matter how hard she pushed, it wouldn’t budge. It felt as if the door was frozen shut. Linyuan looked at Su Jin'er in terror, her face pale.
"How could this happen? Is the door locked?"
"I didn’t lock it!"
A white mist slowly began to rise inside the car, gradually spreading throughout the cabin. Even with their eyes wide open, they could hardly see each other, and breathing became increasingly difficult.
"Jin'er, I can hardly breathe; it hurts so much!" Linyuan shouted hoarsely.
Su Jin'er widened her eyes in fear as she looked at the back seat, where a mass of pitch-black mist was slowly rising—darker than night itself. Her chest heaved violently, and the air she inhaled felt like fire burning in her lungs, as if a flame was igniting within her.
The black mist grew thicker and gradually took on a human shape, though it remained indistinct and unclear.
"Jin'er, why can’t I move my body?" Linyuan said with a quivering voice; she shouldn’t have seen that shadow yet!
Su Jin'er tried to move her body but found she couldn’t move at all—not even a finger. It felt like a nightmare; unlike a dream, she was wide awake and not dreaming at all.
“Xiaoyuan, close your eyes, don’t look at anything, don’t think about anything.” Saying this, she closed her own eyes. Perhaps all of this was just her illusion; if she closed her eyes, it would disappear.
But she was wrong.
As she closed her eyes, she felt her eyelids becoming heavier and heavier, as if something was pressing down on them.
Finally, unable to endure any longer, she slowly opened her eyes.
She gasped in horror but could not make a sound. What was that?
She saw a gigantic eyeball hanging right in front of her. It was this very eyeball that had pressed against her eyelids earlier. The eyeball was as large as an egg, swaying on her nose bridge and dripping with foul-smelling blood, each drop falling onto Su Jin'er's clothes.
She wanted to scream, to make this terrifying eyeball move away from her; she had just changed into this outfit.
Su Jin'er stared wide-eyed at the eyeball. It seemed to be laughing, sending chills down her spine. But why did she feel like the eyeball was laughing?
“What are you laughing at?” Su Jin'er shouted, but no sound came out. Linyuan sitting across from her also made no sound, as if he didn’t exist at all.
For some reason, looking at the eyeball in front of her didn’t frighten her at all; instead, it felt quite ridiculous. Who did it think it was trying to scare with this little game?
The only strange thing was why she couldn’t speak.
She shook her head vigorously and then opened her eyes.
Nothing was in front of her, yet she remained seated in the car, with no cold wind, no white mist, no black fog, and certainly no egg-sized eyeball.
She sat up straight, curiously looking at Linyuan who was sleeping beside her. Could it be that everything that just happened was merely a dream?
However, this dream felt too real!
She looked down and was surprised to find a few drops of already congealed blood at her feet.
“Xiaoyuan, wake up!” She nudged the still-sleeping Linyuan.
Linyuan opened her eyes and looked at Su Jin'er, saying, “How did I fall asleep? Where is Captain Xing? Hasn't he returned yet?”
Su Jin'er didn't answer her but instead asked, “Did you have a dream just now?”
“A dream?” Linyuan rubbed her eyes. “I think I did dream. I seemed to enter a pure white world, where there was nothing but white. There was no sound, and I couldn't even speak.”
“Did you see any black fog?”
“Black fog?” She thought for a moment and then shook her head.
Su Jin'er glanced at the watch on her wrist; it was already four o'clock, yet Captain Xing still hadn't returned.
“Xiaoyuan, let's go check if something has happened to Captain Xing.”
She held Linyuan's hand as they carefully got out of the car. The sun had already disappeared, and the outside air was no longer warm like it was at noon; instead, there was a slight chill. Su Jin'er tightly gripped Linyuan's hand, clearly feeling her trembling.
The three of them had come to this forest together. Two hours ago, Captain Xing had told them to wait in the car for him, but now two hours had passed, and Captain Xing still hadn't returned. They were worried that something might have happened to him. Although he was the captain of the criminal police team, he was still just a mortal. If he encountered—
Su Jin'er stopped her anxious thoughts. She didn't know what was wrong with her; recently, it seemed she subconsciously believed in the existence of Demon, yet she refused to accept it.
When they reached the tree, they found that Captain Xing was not there at all. Only the wind blew quietly, and there was not a sound to be heard around them.
“Captain Xing, where are you?” Su Jin'er shouted loudly.
However, after waiting for a long time, there was still no response.
“Could he have encountered an accident?” Linyuan tightly clutched Su Jin'er's clothing, her body shaking continuously.
“No way! He is a criminal police officer; how could he easily fall victim?”
