Watching Xiao Liu and the others carry Du Xiaonan's body away, Su Jin'er closed her eyes in pain; this was the second one.
Who would be next?
“Captain Xing, what was the cause of Xiaonan's death?” she asked, looking at Captain Xing, who was smoking nearby. This was the first time she had seen him smoke.
He tossed the cigarette butt aside and stamped it out forcefully. “It could be the three bullet holes in her body. We’ll have to wait for the Autopsy Report for specifics.”
After this sudden turn of events, Su Jin'er felt much calmer. Captain Xing was right; finding the Killer was the most important thing. Otherwise, how many more people would be harmed? She couldn't bear to think about it.
She got into the car. “Let’s go! No matter what, finding the Killer is our top priority.”
Captain Xing glanced at her but said nothing. Linyuan also got into the car, keeping her head down and silent. Su Jin'er knew she was crying, and how could she not feel sad herself? But what good was sadness? Could it bring back the dead?
“Wait a minute!” she suddenly exclaimed, realizing she had forgotten something so important.
“What is it?” Captain Xing jumped slightly and quickly hit the brakes. Linyuan, sitting in the back, didn’t notice and bumped her head against the seat, fortunately, it was soft.
Rubbing her forehead, she looked curiously at the two in front.
“I just remembered where Zhang Junsheng left his clues; this is a crucial lead for us! Drive back to school; otherwise, if the Killer gets there before us, it will be too late.”
“How can you be so sure he left clues?” Linyuan asked doubtfully.
“I don’t know; it’s just a gut feeling!”
Captain Xing turned the car around and headed back to school. She still vaguely remembered the tree that hung Zhang Junsheng's body; if he really left clues, they would definitely be nearby.
Upon reaching the small grove, Su Jin'er jumped out of the car before it had even come to a complete stop. Captain Xing shouted at her from behind about safety, but she seemed not to hear and dashed into the woods without looking back.
Where is it?
She found the tree based on her memory and then began to search around.
Linyuan looked at her in confusion. After Zhang Junsheng's death, they had come to search together but found nothing at that time. Jin'er had even doubted her intuition; why were they searching again now?
"Jin'er, what exactly are you looking for?"
"The tree hollow," she replied simply.
"The clue is in the tree hollow?"
"If you know, then hurry up and look."
Linyuan also joined the search, while Captain Xing stood under the large tree, observing closely. Su Jin'er glanced at him and said, "Even if there were clues left back then, they should have disappeared by now!"
Captain Xing did not respond to her but instead asked, "What was Zhang Junsheng like when he died?"
"He looked terrifying; a hanging corpse wouldn't look good!" Linyuan stood under a tree, looking up at it.
"You are the captain of the criminal police team; can't you see Zhang Junsheng's Autopsy Report?"
"Of course I can, but don't you know that his body was never autopsied?"
"What?" Su Jin'er and Linyuan exclaimed simultaneously.
"It seems you really didn't know."
"What on earth is going on?" Su Jin'er leaned against a tree, frowning as she asked.
"Let's talk about that later. Have you found what you were looking for?"
Su Jin'er shrugged her shoulders and casually glanced at the tree next to Linyuan.
"Xiaoyuan, does the tree beside you have a hollow?"
Linyuan turned his head to look and said, "No, I just checked."
Su Jin'er walked over skeptically and examined the base of the tree closely. A stone was embedded in the roots; if one didn't look closely, they would never notice it. Next to the stone, several ants were struggling to drag a dead insect toward a hole.
"I guess if Zhang Junsheng left any clues, they should be right here," she said with a meaningful smile.
"Strange, how can you be so sure he would leave a clue?"
Su Jin'er didn't answer. She exerted a lot of effort to pull out the stone that was wedged in the hollow. The stone had a peculiar color, almost matching that of the tree; if one didn't look closely, they would think it was part of the tree, which was why Linyuan hadn't noticed it.
Linyuan stared blankly at Su Jin'er, who was fixated on the hollow, and asked curiously, "Aren't you going to take it?"
"Uh—I'm—well, I'm a bit scared!" She had always been afraid of those soft-bodied creatures. Earlier, she hadn't thought much about it due to her urgency, but now that she had found it, she felt afraid of those little bugs.
"You—can't be serious! Weren't you quite brave just now?" Linyuan stifled a laugh and reached his hand into the hollow, but his expression suddenly became stiff.
"Xiaoyuan, what's wrong? There isn't a snake in there, is there?"
Linyuan didn't respond; he simply pulled his hand out of the hollow, holding a small gray notebook.
Su Jin'er exclaimed happily, "There really is something!"
Captain Xing heard her words and quickly walked over. He reached out and snatched the small notebook from Linyuan's hand, then said seriously, "This is now confiscated; it's very important evidence."
“Captain Xing, why are you so cunning?”
Linyuan pouted in dissatisfaction.
Su Jin'er looked at Captain Xing speechlessly. “Of course you can show us, but you have to let us see it first!”
“If you want to see it, that's fine, but you need to help me find that strange villa first.”
“Hey! You're so strange. Didn't you always think that villa was just my imagination?”
“A police officer must consider every aspect and treat each as a target for investigation; only then can we find the Killer faster.”
Linyuan reached out to grab the notebook, but he dodged.
“Captain Xing, let's first see what Zhang Junsheng knows. Maybe he knows who the Killer is.”
Captain Xing glanced at Su Jin'er, then sat down and opened the notebook. Su Jin'er and Linyuan leaned in closer.
June 10, 2008, today is my brother's Seventh Day. I'm so scared being home alone; I don't know where Dad and Mom went. My brother is dead, and I can no longer pretend that he did something bad and let me take the blame. But why can't I feel happy at all? Dad and Mom never liked me, but I can't tell them that it was always my brother who did the bad things. Maybe they would have preferred it if I had been the one who died!
June 13, 2008, Dad and Mom have been gone for three days. I don't know where they went. Maybe they think nothing matters without my brother. I don't know what I mean to them. My brother and I were only a minute apart; why is our treatment so different?
Dad and Mom, I really want to know what I did wrong.
July 1, 2008, I now know for sure that they really don’t want me anymore. It’s been so long, and they still haven’t come back. Perhaps even if I died, they wouldn’t care! Even if I wanted to tell them that I was the one who had always been their good child, they wouldn’t believe me now!
Ha ha! I'm so silly, always thinking they would discover it on their own. Shouldn’t I blame them for making us brothers look exactly alike? Not even they can tell us apart!
Brother, do you know? I've borne so much for you. Even after your death, can I still not receive even a little love from them? What am I then? If they don’t want me, why did they even give birth to me?
On July 2, 2008, I was in so much pain. I lost a family member, and what is the meaning of being alone in this world? Brother, you took everything from me. You even made me take the college entrance exam for you. You had the chance to go to school but didn't seize it, leaving me to take your place while you went off to play. You even had to compete with me for the person I liked. Do you know how much I hate you? I wish you were dead, but when you died, I wasn't happy at all. I thought that if you died, Mom and Dad would love me, but they still hate me and still dislike me. Tell me, what did I do wrong? Tell me.
"It seems that Zhang Junsheng really has an older brother who looks just like him, and his parents don't like him either. Could it be that Zhang Junsheng killed his brother?" Linyuan said, resting his chin on his hand.
"That possibility cannot be ruled out," Captain Xing replied.
Su Jin'er frowned and took the diary from Captain Xing's hands. "Look at this sentence; he says that he even has to compete for the person he likes. Who could this person be? Maybe finding this person will lead us to the killer of Zhang Junsheng's brother, who is also Zhang Jun."
"But this all happened five years ago. Does it have anything to do with the case we're dealing with now?"
"At least Zhang Junsheng's death is related to this matter," Su Jin'er said as she turned to the next page, only to find it blank. She looked at Captain Xing with a puzzled expression.
"No way! Is this all there is in the diary?" Linyuan took the diary and flipped through it from front to back; aside from a few chapters at the beginning, there were no more words.
