The shovel of Locust hit something, and he excitedly said, "Criminal Investigation Team, there really is something down here."
"Of course there is something, hurry up and dig it out," Captain Xing also heard the sound.
"It might just be a rock!" Jiang Jie stretched her head out, curiously looking at the dug-up pit.
"You're such a jinx, only you would say that." Captain Xing shot her a glare and continued to watch the pit.
Jiang Jie stuck out her tongue while Locust chuckled to himself.
After a while, Locust suddenly shouted, "I've dug it out!"
Captain Xing quickly walked over; it was something wrapped in cloth, round in shape, with patches of stains on it that looked like blood, and it emitted a foul odor.
"It can't be—" Jiang Jie frowned and waved her hand in front of her nose.
Huang Cong put on gloves and carefully took the object out of the pit, then gently placed it on the flat ground outside.
Captain Xing's frown deepened; without even opening the cloth, it was obvious what was wrapped inside.
"Captain, should we open it?" Huang Cong nervously looked at Captain Xing. Since they started digging, the captain's brow had not relaxed. Although he hadn't been in the police station for long, he had been following Captain Xing since he joined and had learned quite a bit. He greatly admired Captain Xing's investigative skills. In this year, he had never seen the captain look so troubled.
"Open it!"
The moment the cloth was opened, an even stronger stench made them all instinctively take a few steps back; only Captain Xing seemed unaffected as he continued to look at the bloody head.
"Huang Cong, keep looking around for any other parts of the body," said Captain Xing, his eyes never leaving the horrifying head.
Although Jiang Jie had worked on several cases with Captain Xing, this was her first encounter with such a brutal murder and dismemberment case. Her stomach churned, and she finally couldn't hold it in any longer, running to the side to vomit.
"Ah—"
A scream startled Captain Xing. He turned around to see Su Jin'er and Linyuan approaching, the scream having come from Linyuan.
Su Jin'er's face was pale; it was unclear whether it was from exhaustion or fear at the sight of the head.
"Captain Xing, was this dug up from that area?"
"Yes, I thought it would be a complete body, but it turned out to be just a head," Captain Xing replied as he stood up.
Su Jin'er glanced at the head and quickly turned away, reminded of Wen Shishi's eyeless sockets and her body covered in wounds.
"Captain Xing, do you think this head is related to the case we are currently working on?"
Captain Xing shook his head. One cannot rely solely on feelings when solving cases. Although he sometimes relied on intuition, he always needed evidence to back it up.
"Xiao Cong, take this back for examination. Let me know the results once you have them."
After instructing Huang Cong and watching him leave, Captain Xing turned to Su Jin'er and asked, "You mentioned on the phone that Wen Shishi is dead. Who is this Wen Shishi?"
"Wen Shishi is our Student Council Chairman and our Senior Sister. We had previously approached her to inquire about Li Yiqing."
"So, you think it was because of you that she became a victim."
Su Jin'er nodded. She had always felt uncomfortable about this and felt guilty for not being able to save her.
"This isn't your fault!" After a pause, he continued, "What exactly happened to you?"
Su Jin'er recounted everything they encountered in the city. Linyuan listened quietly, finding it strange but not interrupting. Once she finished, Linyuan said, "Jin'er, are you sure you didn't make a mistake?"
Linyuan's words puzzled Su Jin'er, but she still nodded.
"But why did what Zuo Yi and I saw differ from what you saw?" Linyuan was even more confused; she clearly saw another bustling street!
Su Jin'er looked at her in surprise.
"After Zuo Yi arrived, we went to find you. After we left that narrow alley, we ended up on another street and couldn't find you at all. The phone lines were down, so we returned to school and didn't see that strange villa you mentioned!"
Linyuan's words made Su Jin'er break out in a cold sweat. That villa felt too real to be just her imagination. She vividly remembered the sensation of pushing open each door and seeing inside, as well as the all-pink room and the photo with a scratched face on the bedside table.
Captain Xing looked at them in confusion. He had handled many cases but had never encountered such a strange one. Even if it were an illusion, it was unlikely for two people to experience it simultaneously unless they had been drugged without their knowledge. That would be the only way different people could share the same hallucination at the same time; however, the chances of them experiencing the same illusion were even slimmer. Alternatively, one of them might be lying.
"Besides seeing someone who looks exactly like Zhang Junsheng, did you have any contact with or see anyone else around you?"
Su Jin'er and Linyuan both lowered their heads in thought for a moment. Su Jin'er then looked up and said, "During our pursuit of that person, someone bumped into me and then seemed to accidentally bump into Chu Feifan as well. We were too focused on chasing after him to pay much attention."
"That's right. It's possible that what Linyuan and Zuo Yi saw was real, while you and Chu Feifan were drugged and experienced hallucinations."
"But it's impossible for both of them to have the same hallucination at the same time!"
As they walked and talked, they had already reached the bottom of the girls' dormitory.
"You just said that after you entered that villa, you were attracted by the two pairs of slippers in front of you. At that time, you probably didn't notice where Chu Feifan went, right?"
Su Jin'er was taken aback. Captain Xing was right; she had been drawn to those two pairs of slippers as soon as she entered, completely oblivious to Chu Feifan. However, she remembered that he seemed to have gone straight into the living room and didn't linger at the entrance. It was only later, when she realized he hadn't followed her, that she went back to check. Now that she thought about it, it was indeed quite odd.
"Captain Xing means that at that time Chu Feifan was no longer really Chu Feifan?"
Captain Xing did not answer, which could be taken as an acknowledgment. There was no evidence for any of this; it was merely their speculation. Moreover, the person who bumped into Su Jin'er had seemed quite ordinary, and she hadn't paid much attention to him. Now, trying to recall what he looked like, she couldn't remember at all. Her mind was solely occupied with worrying about Chu Feifan's safety.
In fact, Captain Xing's earlier thoughts were just guesses. He had encountered a case before where someone was drugged into hallucinations and then committed murder. He remembered that the motive behind that case was trivial, yet it led to regrettable outcomes. When Su Jin'er mentioned being bumped into—especially by someone who collided with her and Chu Feifan—he began to suspect that perhaps someone had drugged them. But now that he thought about it, his initial deduction seemed quite plausible; maybe that person really did bump into them by accident!
The more Captain Xing thought about it, the more uneasy he felt, but he couldn't pinpoint what exactly felt off. "Guessing like this isn't a solution; we should go check out that house! There might be some clues."
Su Jin'er agreed; they knew nothing at this point and were merely speculating, which wouldn't solve anything. With this in mind, she looked curiously at Captain Xing. This captain had handled many cases before; why was he playing a guessing game like a novice girl?
Noticing her gaze, Captain Xing felt a bit nervous and awkwardly glanced at Su Jin'er, saying, "I'm not a deity; I make mistakes too."
He understood what Su Jin'er meant by looking at him like that, but he truly didn't know how to explain his strange feelings. He couldn't just tell her that he often relied on his instincts while solving cases!
Just then, his phone rang unexpectedly, providing a timely escape from his embarrassment. The call was from Huang Cong. He thought to himself: This guy calls at just the right moment.
"Hello! Did you get any results?"
"The forensic expert is examining the situation, but another strange thing has happened."
"What is it?"
Listening to the phone call, Captain Xing's frown deepened.
Watching Captain Xing hang up the phone, Su Jin'er nervously asked what had happened.
Captain Xing sighed and said, "Du Xiaonan has gone missing."
Su Jin'er's head buzzed, nearly causing her to faint, while Linyuan's mouth dropped open in shock.
"Wasn't she at the police station? How could she go missing?"
"Yesterday, after Li Yiqian proved she was wrongfully accused, she was released. She said she was going home, but just now her family called and said she never returned."
