She sat on the ground, hugging her knees, and casually turned her head, suddenly noticing something strange. She slowly moved closer, looking at the lush green grass. Although it was early spring, the grass shouldn't be growing this well, especially since there was no sunlight here. Even resilient little grasses shouldn't thrive like this.
She dug a little into the soil with her fingers and found that the dirt here was softer than in other places, as if someone had disturbed it. She looked around; there was nothing but grass. In other areas, the grass had just begun to sprout, while this patch was thriving. Could there be something buried underground?
She searched for a tool to dig into the soil but found nothing suitable. She sat down again, listening carefully to the sounds coming from beyond the wall.
At that moment, Linyuan and Captain Xing were hurrying over. Captain Xing had previously led a search of the Old Laboratory but found nothing. He found it very strange that Xu Mengguan's body had no blood after death, yet they couldn't find any useful clues. Now, they stood at the entrance of the Old Laboratory, searching for Su Jin'er.
“She doesn't seem to be here!” Jiang Jie said.
The others who were searching elsewhere returned with no findings.
Captain Xing stroked his chin and thought for a moment before asking, “Linyuan, what did she say on the phone?”
“She only said to bring her clothes and come here; then the call dropped because her phone ran out of battery,” Linyuan bit her lip tightly, tears welling in her eyes.
“She’s a smart girl. If she said she would be here, then she would be here. And she wanted us to find her. If she could come out, she would have done so. Since she hasn't come out, it means there's a reason she can't. She asked for clothes—” Captain Xing suddenly smiled: “I get it! She must have escaped, but her clothes got dirty for some reason and she can't come out to see us. So she must be here; she just can't come out to find us.”
“Then let's look for her.” Hearing Captain Xing's words, Linyuan said excitedly; as long as Jin'er was safe, she would feel relieved.
“Alright, let's split up and expand our search area as much as possible,” Captain Xing instructed his team.
Everyone began searching for Su Jin'er while Captain Xing stayed with Linyuan. He felt that this girl was closest to Su Jin'er and might know something that she just hadn’t remembered yet.
Linyuan kept her head down; she really wanted to find Su Jin'er but felt like she had forgotten something important and should know something but just couldn’t recall it.
She furrowed her brows tightly, her hand holding Jin'er's clothes sweating. If she couldn't think of where Jin'er was, she would never forgive herself.
She looked up at the forest behind the laboratory; beyond it lay the Affiliated Hospital of the medical school. Ever since Xu Mengguan's death, the school had separated the Affiliated Hospital from the Old Laboratory. Students went to the hospital via a small path beside it; no one wanted to go near the Old Laboratory. Therefore, this year, the Old Laboratory seemed even emptier and more eerie.
“I got it!” Linyuan suddenly exclaimed happily.
“What did you remember?” Captain Xing was startled by her but quickly reacted and asked.
"I remember last year when I was feeling unwell, Jin'er took me to the hospital, and we went to the grove of trees behind the hospital. It is known as Lover's Grove by people from our school. During the day, many couples go there, but at night it is very quiet. Jin'er once discovered a hidden door there; it wasn't very obvious, so if you didn't look closely, you wouldn't notice it at all."
Linyuan appeared very excited, speaking a bit incoherently, but Captain Xing understood.
"Are you saying that Jin'er could be there?"
"Yes, my intuition tells me so."
"Let's go! You take me there!" Captain Xing told the team members nearby to continue searching while he and Linyuan headed toward the hospital.
Su Jin'er pressed her ear against the door. It was a wooden door that had decayed over time. If it weren't for her lack of strength, she might have been able to open it.
Linyuan pointed at the door and said, "This is it!"
Su Jin'er was taken aback; it sounded like Linyuan's voice. She quickly stood up and peeked through the crack in the door, just in time to see Linyuan pointing at the door and talking to another person.
"Xiaoyuan, I'm here!" she shouted happily.
Linyuan heard Su Jin'er's voice and excitedly said, "Captain Xing, she's really here! I can hear her calling me. Jin'er, are you inside?"
"Yes, I'm here!"
Captain Xing walked over to check the lock and pulled hard on it. The lock didn't open, but the wooden door developed a crack; it was decaying too much.
"Jin'er, stand back. I'm going to kick the door open."
Su Jin'er moved aside and responded that she was ready.
With one powerful kick, Captain Xing broke a large hole in the door, and Su Jin'er crawled out from inside.
They were shocked to see Su Jin'er, who was covered in blood; not only was her body stained with blood, but her face was also smeared with it.
"Jin'er, are you hurt? Why is there so much blood?"
Linyuan nervously grabbed her, checking for any injuries on her body.
Su Jin'er held her hand and said, "I'm not hurt; this isn't my blood. It's Wen Shishi's. She's already dead."
Linyuan frowned and then held her hand, saying, "You still say you're not hurt. Look at your hand; it's covered in wounds."
"It's nothing; these are just minor injuries. Captain Xing, I couldn't save Wen Shishi; she was killed." She said sadly, watching her friend die right in front of her. That feeling was truly unbearable.
"Do you know who the Killer is? By the way, where's Chu Feifan?"
Captain Xing's words made Su Jin'er's heart ache. She lowered her head and replied, "I don't know who that person is, nor do I know where Chu Feifan is. I don't know if he's alive or dead."
Tears flowed into her mouth as she cried bitterly.
Captain Xing thought for a moment and said, "You should change your clothes first! Also, go take a shower. We'll come find you later."
Jin'er nodded and then returned to the "trench" with Linyuan. She changed out of the bloody clothes and felt much more comfortable.
"By the way, Captain Xing, I think there's something strange about this place. Could you please have someone check it out?" Su Jin'er pointed to the lush green grass and said, "I suspect there might be something underneath."
Captain Xing looked at it and said, "It does seem strange. You and Linyuan should head back first while I get someone to take a look. By the way, give me your clothes! I'll take care of them."
Su Jin'er handed her bloody clothes to Captain Xing and then left with Linyuan.
Captain Xing told Jiang Jie to find some shovels or similar tools as he squatted alone in the "trench," carefully observing the lush green grass. This area clearly had better nutrients than others, which was why the grass grew so quickly and healthily here.
He sighed as a bad premonition surged in his heart.
Jiang Jie borrowed a shovel and other tools from the school's sanitation workers and began the digging work.
"Be careful, everyone. The things down there might be useful to us."

Jiang Jie patted the young officer on the shoulder and said, "I'm talking about Locust! Can't you see our captain is struggling with this case? How dare you make jokes about him at a time like this? Are you trying to get sent back home?"
The young officer's name was actually Huang Cong, but due to a pun, everyone called him Locust. He didn't mind and accepted it since a name was just a code anyway.
"Sister Zhang, you don't understand. When solving cases, the atmosphere can't be too tense. If it is, the brain gets too much pressure and can't think normally. Being relaxed helps keep the mind clear!" Huang Cong continued to laugh.
"You’re just full of nonsense; hurry up and get to work!"
Huang Cong stuck out his tongue, bent down, and continued digging. Captain Xing furrowed his brow as he looked at the patch of land. He had a nagging feeling that what was buried here was related to the case they were working on. Although they had already captured the Killer and he had confessed, there were too many doubts that made him suspicious. Even that little girl could see it; if he, as a captain with ten years of experience, couldn't figure it out, it would only mean he was too foolish.
