She sat on the ground, gasping for breath, as the corpse moved closer to her, its body stiff. Struggling to stand, she leaned against the wall. Although the corpse was not moving quickly, she knew she no longer had the strength to evade it. What she didn't know was how long this transformation would last. She had heard her grandmother say that such transformations occurred under specific conditions, like during a thunderstorm. It was night now, but there was no thunder; how could this transformation be happening?
Or was there another reason?
Su Jin'er watched as Wen Shishi continued to move in front of her. Strangely, despite the time that had passed, it still hadn't reached her side. The room was dark, and she could see nothing, only hear the heavy footsteps.
She listened carefully to the direction of the footsteps and then moved to sit in the farthest corner from the corpse. She needed to conserve her strength; without knowing what was happening, she couldn't act recklessly. If what had just happened occurred again, she would surely end up accompanying Wen Shishi.
The room was tall, seemingly over three meters high, higher than an average room, and it appeared to have only one door with no windows. She scoffed; perhaps this was a place used by that strange person to imprison others! But where would Chu Feifan be kept?
Leaning against the wall, she felt a chill despite it being spring; the temperature difference between day and night was significant. The cold wall made her shiver as she hugged her knees tightly. Suddenly, she thought of Mom and Dad. If she really died here, how heartbroken they would be!
Rubbing her dry eyes, she frowned.
When had those heavy footsteps disappeared? How had she not noticed at all?
She pushed herself off the ground to stand up but touched something with her hand—it was her phone. Excitedly, she picked it up; it was indeed her phone, though she had no idea how it ended up here. However, there was no time to ponder that question. She pressed the power button, and the phone turned on. Messages flooded in; in her palm, it vibrated continuously as she caught sight of Wen Shishi's corpse still standing but no longer moving. She shone her phone's light on the footprints on the ground and realized that it hadn't approached her because it had been pacing in place.
How could this be? What was hidden in this room?
Finally, the phone stopped vibrating. She checked and found over thirty unread messages and more than fifty missed calls—all from Linyuan and Zuo Yi.
They must be worried sick. But even with her phone, there was no way for them to rescue her since she had no idea where she was located. She sat back down on the ground and began reviewing each message; they were all from Linyuan asking where she was and what had happened, along with notifications about missed calls. She hurriedly dialed a number, but the call wouldn't go through—there was no signal here at all. Yet how could she receive these messages?
She started searching around the room for any possible signal while trying to stay as far away from the dangerous corpse as possible. Her phone battery was running low, so she needed to act quickly.
Finally, she found a signal and dialed Linyuan's number. After one ring, it connected; it seemed Linyuan had been waiting for her call all along.
"Jin'er, where are you? Why haven't you answered my call for so long? Do you know how worried I am?"
On the other end of the line, Linyuan's voice trembled with tears; she must be frantic.
"I've been locked up by a strange person, and I don't know where Chu Feifan has been taken. Are you and Zuo Yi at school right now?"
"You've been locked up? Do you know where that is? Captain Xing is right here with us. Tell us your location, and we'll come to rescue you immediately."
"I don't know where this is, but I have some bad news to tell you." After saying this, she fell silent. On the other end, Linyuan also remained quiet, but she could hear her breathing becoming a bit hurried.
"Wen Shishi is dead!"
"Wen Shishi? You mean the Student Council Chairman?"
"Yes!"
Then Su Jin'er heard Linyuan repeat her words on the other end. She couldn't see their expressions, but she could imagine them.
"Jin'er, Captain Xing wants to talk to you."
"Okay!"
Then she heard Linyuan hand the phone over to Captain Xing.
"Jin'er, are you okay?" Captain Xing asked gently. His voice reminded her of her father.
"Yes, Captain Xing, I'm fine, I just don't know where I am, so please don't speak, listen to me. My phone is almost dead. I'm in a room that is taller than an ordinary one, and there’s hardly any signal here, so I think I must be in the suburbs. Wen Shishi is dead, and right now I'm in a room with her body. There seems to be no windows except for a door. That's all I know. Try to see if you can find this place. I'll hang up now! That person seems to be coming." Footsteps sounded outside the door as she put the phone in her pocket and crouched in the corner.
The door swung open, and a cold wind blew in.
"Damn it, why is the light broken?" the person cursed.
Although Su Jin'er couldn't see him, she knew he couldn't see her either, so she held her breath and sat quietly in the corner. When she heard him unlocking the door, she had already planned to escape while the lights were out and he couldn't see her, choosing a spot closer to the entrance.
"Bang—"
The person seemed to bump into something and then cursed while rubbing his forehead. He still didn't realize he had collided with Wen Shishi's standing corpse, which fell to the ground due to the sudden impact.
Now was her chance. Su Jin'er stood up and dashed toward the door. She dared to do this because she hadn't heard him lock the door; he must have thought he was still tied up, which was why he hadn’t locked it.
She cursed him as an idiot in her mind and quickly pulled open the door and rushed out.
"Damn it, come back!" The person reacted only after hearing the sound of the door, but by then Su Jin'er had already disappeared from sight.
After running out, Su Jin'er didn't have time to check her direction before taking off. However, she stopped halfway and turned back. She remembered what Chu Feifan had said: the most dangerous place is often the safest. So she hid behind the house, believing that due to the darkness, that person wouldn't find her quickly. She crouched in a corner and waited until she saw him running far away while cursing before coming out. She looked around in confusion, not knowing where she was but certain there were many trees nearby.
She shook her head and smiled lightly. Why do murderers like to build their houses in forests? Is it because it's convenient for hiding?
A forest?
Could this be the forest near the town? Perhaps the Killer has two houses here! But soon she dismissed that thought because this forest was vast while that one was small.
She had no sense of direction at all. Although she walked in one direction, after a day without food, she felt dizzy, and her legs felt as heavy as if they were filled with lead. Each step required a long moment of catching her breath, but she absolutely could not stop.
However, it wasn't long before she could no longer move. She sat down under a tree, unwilling to stand up again. She looked up at the sky, and then she heard footsteps approaching.
She was startled. Had that person found her? How could they have arrived so quickly?
Ignoring how weak and sore her legs felt, she forced herself to stand up and stumbled forward. But she was too exhausted; her strength was clearly failing her, and the footsteps behind her grew closer and closer.
What should she do?
She looked around; there were only trees everywhere. Did she have to hide behind a tree like last time in the small grove in the village? Would she be as lucky this time to encounter someone who would save her?
The footsteps were even closer now. She couldn't think about anything else; she quickly hid behind a tree, holding her breath in nervousness.
Finally, the owner of the footsteps appeared. It wasn't someone there to save her but rather the person who terrified her. He had replaced his mask with a grotesque and terrifying Demon Mask, which looked even more horrifying under the moonlight. She trembled and bit her lip tightly, tasting the metallic sweetness of blood in her mouth, but she couldn't care less.
