Watching Jiang Jie walk out, Su Jin'er and Chu Feifan sat down on the sofa. The office of the Captain of the Criminal Investigation Team was simple, with a desk, a basic chair, and the sofa they were sitting on along with a glass coffee table.
Jiang Jie entered holding two cups, placed them on the coffee table, and then closed the door as he walked out.
"Now you can tell me everything you know," the Captain of the Criminal Investigation Team said with a smile as he looked at them.
Su Jin'er glanced at Chu Feifan and then began recounting all the strange occurrences that had happened since their military training. As she spoke, the Captain's brow occasionally relaxed and then furrowed tightly again.
Once Su Jin'er finished, she let out a heavy sigh as if she had just completed a long run, then picked up a glass of water from the table and took a sip.
The Captain of the Criminal Investigation Team lowered his head; while listening to Su Jin'er, he had occasionally taken notes. Now, he was focused on what he had written down, his brow deeply furrowed.
After a moment, he looked up at them and said, "There's nothing more for now. You can go back! If anything comes up, I'll contact you." He tore off a piece of paper from his notebook, quickly wrote down a series of numbers, and handed it to Chu Feifan. "This is my phone number; call me if you need anything."
They nodded and stood up to leave.
"Oh! By the way!"
They turned back, and the Captain of the Criminal Investigation Team continued smiling, "I hope you both study hard. Leave this matter to us in the police; remember not to take any action on your own."
"Okay, Captain of the Criminal Investigation Team. We'll be on our way."
Spring had already arrived, and the sunlight outside was somewhat blinding. However, after not seeing the sun for an entire winter, Su Jin'er spread her arms wide to let the sunlight shine on her; it felt indescribably comfortable.
Linyuan and Zuo Yi were standing under a tree by the roadside talking. Linyuan seemed to still be angry, pouting and looking dissatisfied at Zuo Yi, while Zuo Yi appeared to be trying to appease her, nodding and bowing in a manner that surprised Chu Feifan.
"It seems that my good friend has taken a liking to your good friend," Chu Feifan said, crossing his arms and smiling meaningfully.
"What? Do you think Linyuan is not worthy of Zuo Yi?" Su Jin'er shot back at him.
Seeing her suddenly change her expression, Chu Feifan quickly adjusted his demeanor and smiled apologetically, "How could that be? Linyuan is also a rare beauty, more than enough for Zuo Yi. If Linyuan can take a liking to him, that's his good fortune from a past life!"
Su Jin'er immediately felt a cold sweat running down her back; his official tone was just too—
At that moment, Linyuan spotted the two coming out and immediately waved at them with a smile. Zuo Yi, seeing her happy expression, looked over as well. Noticing Chu Feifan's gloating demeanor, he made a throat-cutting gesture. Chu Feifan shrugged his shoulders in response, indicating helplessness.
Su Jin'er walked over and said with a smile, "Alright, Xiaoyuan, stop teasing him; otherwise, he might really consider suicide."
Linyuan blinked and then looked at Zuo Yi, saying, "For Jin'er's sake, I'll forgive you today."
She then burst into laughter, and it was at that moment Zuo Yi realized he had been tricked. He stood off to the side sulking while Linyuan laughed so hard her stomach hurt.
Su Jin'er leaned in and whispered something in Linyuan's ear. Linyuan immediately stopped laughing, her face slightly flushed as she said, "How did you know?"
"I could tell!"
Linyuan sighed in relief. "I thought it was something he said! No way; I don't believe it."
Her earlier laughter had made her feel a bit warm, and she was fanning herself with her hand, unsure if it was due to the heat or embarrassment as her face grew redder.
"The weather is so nice today; why don't we go shopping? It's been a while since we visited the city center," Linyuan said as she linked arms with Su Jin'er.
Su Jin'er frowned. Shopping was fine, but the city center seemed too bustling for her liking; she wasn't fond of crowded places. However, seeing Linyuan's excited expression, it appeared that she wouldn't give up easily.
"I'm not going. You women are the most troublesome when it comes to shopping," Zuo Yi said, waving his hands repeatedly and backing away.
Linyuan shot him an eye roll. He immediately lowered his head and hurried over, like a wronged little wife, obediently standing beside Linyuan.
"Look, he's so obedient now, and he still won't admit it!" Su Jin'er nudged Linyuan's arm with her elbow.
Linyuan lowered her head. In truth, how could she not sense Zuo Yi's feelings? She was just waiting for him to tell her directly. She was the kind of girl who dared to love and hate, so she hoped to find someone who liked her and could bravely express it, rather than secretly watching from the sidelines. Su Jin'er certainly understood Linyuan's thoughts; she was just considering whether to tell Zuo Yi. If she revealed it secretly and Linyuan found out, she would definitely be unhappy.
Su Jin'er glanced at Zuo Yi and then at Chu Feifan. She released Linyuan's arm and walked over to Chu Feifan, asking, "Will Zuo Yi confess?"
Chu Feifan frowned, not quite understanding her meaning.
"I mean, if he likes someone, will he confess to her?"
After thinking for a moment, Chu Feifan replied, "When he was younger, he liked a girl and confessed to her, but he was rejected. Since then, I haven't seen him confess to anyone else."
She sighed and shook her head. If Zuo Yi really liked Linyuan but didn't tell her himself, then they would only miss their chance because Linyuan would never say anything.
"What's wrong?" Chu Feifan asked curiously as she noticed Su Jin'er's regretful expression.
"Because—" Su Jin'er thought for a moment but decided not to say anything: "Because they might miss their chance."
"What do you mean?"
"Secret!"
"Hey! Are you tongue-tied?" Chu Feifan shouted at Su Jin'er’s back, feeling dissatisfied.
Su Jin'er did not turn around; she just waved her hand in the air. Chu Feifan helplessly followed her, wanting to find an opportunity to ask what the secret was.
However, what he didn't know was that Su Jin'er would never reveal something she didn't want to say, so he was bound to be disappointed.
Linyuan stood by the roadside, watching the passing vehicles and preparing to hail a taxi.
"Why don't I just drive home? It's not far from one of my dad's companies," Zuo Yi said, causing Linyuan to immediately jump to his side.
"Are you saying you want to be our designated driver?"
"Uh—fine! I'll be your driver for free."
"Great! You're such a good buddy!" Linyuan said, giving him a heavy pat on the back.
Zuo Yi winced in pain; he hadn't expected her to hit him, and he certainly didn't anticipate her strength. Realizing she might be getting back at him for scaring her earlier, he chose not to speak. However, what saddened him was her next comment—buddy? Did she only see him as a friend?
Zuo Yi suddenly felt downcast. Ever since being rejected in childhood, he had never confessed his feelings to anyone again. Fortunately, he had never really liked anyone until now, so he hadn’t worried about it. But now that he finally found someone he liked, he didn’t dare to speak up. What was worse was that she considered him just a buddy. The more he thought about it, the more aggrieved he felt, and his face showed his displeasure. Su Jin'er noticed all of this.
"Then I'll just take a car over and drive!" Zuo Yi said with his head down, speaking in a muffled tone.
"What’s wrong? You look so gloomy. If you don’t want to be our driver, then don’t force yourself!" Linyuan pouted and complained.
"That's not what I meant, I..."
"Since that's not what you meant, hurry up and drive! I'm already impatient." Linyuan changed her expression again, smiling at the surprised Zuo Yi.
"Alright, Xiaoyuan, if you keep messing with him, he's going to go crazy," Su Jin'er said, looking at Zuo Yi's face which was alternating between blue and red.
At that moment, a taxi happened to arrive. Linyuan pushed Zuo Yi into the car while saying, "Make it quick!"
Watching the taxi disappear into the distance, Linyuan revealed a cunning smile.
Su Jin'er smiled as she looked at her. She knew that Linyuan had this kind of personality; when she liked someone, she enjoyed teasing them and watching their helpless expressions while laughing happily on the side. However, because Linyuan was also very beautiful, many people pursued her. She never lacked boyfriends but had never truly liked anyone. Su Jin'er had often scolded her for this, but Linyuan remained indifferent, and eventually, Su Jin'er fell silent.
Chu Feifan watched his friend being played by Linyuan and was momentarily confused about what was happening. However, seeing Su Jin'er still smiling, he decided not to say anything. As a boy, he didn't quite understand girls' feelings and especially didn't grasp that Linyuan's way of liking someone was different from others.
