Li Yiqian was the first to enter the cave, followed by Zuo Yi and Gaya Ze, then came Li Jing, Linyuan, Su Jin'er, and Chu Feifan. The cave was not very spacious, but it was wide enough for three people to walk side by side.
It was cold inside the cave, cold enough to make them shiver. An inexplicable sense of fear made them feel uncomfortable all over; despite the chill, they were sweating profusely, their clothes sticking uncomfortably to their bodies.
"It's so uncomfortable!" Linyuan rubbed her arms.
"Do you feel the same way?" Su Jin'er touched her neck, feeling as if someone was blowing air on it.
"Yeah! I feel really cold," Linyuan pressed tightly against Su Jin'er.
"We didn't feel this way when we came in!" Li Yiqian's voice came from the front.
Zuo Yi turned to look at Li Jing, who had her head down and said nothing.
Although the temperature in the cave was unusually low, they hadn't encountered any problems along the way. With someone leading the way, they smoothly exited the cave and returned to the grove outside the school.
At that moment, dawn broke on the horizon. Stepping out of the cave, Linyuan spread her arms and looked at the forest, saying, "I've never thought this forest looked so beautiful before."
They all took a deep breath. Staying in that terrifying village for too long had indeed felt oppressive!
Su Jin'er walked over to Li Yiqian and asked, "Didn't you call the police when you went to look for us?"
Li Yiqian shook his head. "I was really worried about you all and happened to run into Officer Li, so I hurried to find you."
Noticing Li Yiqian's gestures while he spoke, Su Jin'er instinctively tugged at her shirt hem—a habit she had when she was lying.
A trace of faint sadness appeared in Su Jin'er's eyes. She didn't understand why, at this moment, she still had to lie.
She stared intently into Li Yiqian's eyes and asked, "Why are you lying?"
Li Yiqian's body trembled slightly as she nervously looked at Su Jin'er and said, "I'm not lying!"
"Do you know he wants you dead? Why are you still protecting him?"
"Have you seen him?"
"Yes!"
Li Yiqian's previously upright posture instantly slumped. She stared blankly into the unknown distance, her eyes filled with pain.
"Since you've seen him, you probably also know the reason I killed my sister. So I will tell you everything, but, Jin'er, I beg you for one thing."
Su Jin'er frowned. "What is it?"
"I just want to ask you to spare that person!"
Su Jin'er looked at her in confusion. Chu Bufan had incited her to kill her own sister and Li Ran; didn't she hate him? Why was she still protecting him? Or was there another reason behind this that wasn't as Chu Bufan had told them?
She gazed doubtfully at Li Yiqian, who was walking with her head down.
Throughout the journey, Li Yiqian did not speak again; she simply walked quietly.
Back at the school gate, Li Jing said to them, "You all go back! We will handle the body, and we hope you won't run around. We still need your help with many things! As for the village you mentioned, we will investigate it."
Chu Feifan exchanged glances with Gaya Ze, who said, "I'll go with you! Plus, I need to report the situation to the detectives."
Li Jing was taken aback for a moment and then slowly nodded.
Having not rested for an entire night, they were already exhausted. The tension that had been building up relaxed the moment they returned to school, making them feel even more tired.
Su Jin'er rubbed her sore eyes and said, "Everyone should go back and rest! After such a long time without food and running such a long distance, you must all be worn out."
Everyone was tired, so no one said anything further as they each headed to their dormitories. Only Chu Feifan kept looking back at Su Jin'er. Finally, he stopped and called out, "Jin'er!"
Su Jin'er turned to look at him.
"Remember to give me a call when you wake up!"
Su Jin'er smiled and nodded.
Once back in the dormitory, no one spoke. Li Yiqian glanced at Su Jin'er before taking her basin into the bathroom.
Linyuan collapsed onto Su Jin'er's bed with her eyes closed. "I wonder how Xiaonan is doing."
"Right now, I'm not worried about Xiaonan; maybe she's safer at the police station. What I'm worried about is..." She glanced toward the bathroom, and Linyuan understood she was referring to Li Yiqian. Until now, Li Yiqian was still lying, deceiving them time and again.
The sound of running water in the bathroom stopped, and Li Yiqian came out holding her basin.
Su Jin'er looked at her tiredly and smiled, then let Linyuan go in to wash.
Watching Linyuan walk into the bathroom, Li Yiqian lay on the bed. Su Jin'er closed her eyes, and all the events replayed in her mind. Why did Li Yiqian keep lying? Was she really trying to protect Chu Bufan? But why?
Could it be...
If that were true, everything would make sense. But what did Zhang Junsheng have to do with all this? And what about that person who looked exactly like Zhang Junsheng?
Her temples throbbed, and her head began to ache again. She rubbed her forehead and turned to look at Li Yiqian, who was already lying on the bed facing the wall. It seemed she was crying, her body trembling like a leaf in the wind.
"Jin'er, go wash up! I've finished." Linyuan's voice interrupted her thoughts. She sat up, smiled at her, and then walked into the bathroom.
Warm water cascaded over her cold skin, but tears slipped from the corners of her eyes.
Throughout her life, she had never experienced the death of a loved one. Although she had seen funerals, those people were ultimately unrelated to her. However, since coming here, she had witnessed the deaths of those around her time and again, even seeing their corpses with her own eyes. The overwhelming pain surged within her, almost suffocating.
She bent down in agony as her stomach, which had not eaten for nearly a day, began to protest with a burning pain.
When she stepped out of the bathroom, Linyuan and Li Yiqian were already asleep. Listening to their even breathing eased her anxious heart. Lying on the bed, the tension that had been held within her finally relaxed at that moment. She closed her eyes, but scattered images appeared before her—indistinct and intangible. Her breathing quickened; was she dreaming? But she hadn’t fallen asleep yet!
She suddenly opened her eyes; the images vanished, and everything remained unchanged. She glanced at the clock—it was 8:20 PM. She had gone to bed at 8:00 PM, meaning she had slept for 20 minutes, but she was unaware of that time.
How strange!
Turning to face the wall, those 20 minutes only made her already exhausted mind feel even more fatigued.
Forget it, I'll deal with everything after I wake up. With this thought in mind, she found the most comfortable position and fell into a deep sleep.
Su Jin'er woke up to a series of urgent knocks on the door. She opened her eyes, glanced at the clock, and saw it was already past eleven. Her head still throbbed, and the knocking sounded as if it were right beside her. Frowning, she got out of bed, feeling somewhat lightheaded.
When she opened the door, she found the dormitory supervisor standing there.
"You must be Su Jin'er? Officer Li is looking for you downstairs."
Officer Li? It should be Li Jing!
"Yes! Thank you, Auntie. I'll go down right away."
Su Jin'er returned to her dormitory, washed her face, glanced at the two who were still fast asleep, and then quietly left the dormitory, shutting the door behind her.
Today was Saturday, and many students had gone out to have fun. The dormitory was quiet; Su Jin'er didn't encounter a single student on her way.
Li Jing stood under a tree and walked over when she saw Su Jin'er coming down.
"Officer Li, what do you need from me?"
"Oh! I'm here to say goodbye. A few police officers have come to the city, so I think I need to leave."
"Don't you need to assist with the case here?"
Li Jing shook her head and said, "No need; they are all from the Criminal Investigation Team."
"Is it the Criminal Police Team? That must be Gaya Ze who asked them to come back, but even if the Criminal Police Team is coming, she doesn't have to leave!"
By the way, she remembered that Li Jing had once said she was also from the city, but...
She looked at her curiously, but did not say it outright, only saying, "Well! Thank you for your help in the past!"
Li Jing smiled and said, "I didn't help with anything, no need to thank me. By the way, they will definitely come to ask you questions, but you don't need to be afraid. Just tell them what you know. For things you don't know or are unsure about, don't make things up; otherwise, it will affect the case resolution."
Su Jin'er nodded; she realized she was here to warn her.
"Okay, thank you!"
"Then I'll take my leave!"
