"Good for nothing? Who was it that brought you back from that desolate mountain? Do you think the two of you could have made it back on your own?"
Linyuan recalled the creature she encountered that day, resembling a rat, and a shiver ran down her spine. She rubbed her arms and said, "Alright! You're not completely useless; you can be of some use occasionally."
"Occasionally? Please, if it weren't for Chu Feifan agreeing to marry that woman, we wouldn't know how long we would have been dead by now!"
Linyuan glanced fearfully around and then gave Zuo Yi's arm a hard tap, saying, "Could you not say things like that right now?"
Zuo Yi looked at her terrified expression and replied, "Fine! Since you're begging for mercy, I'll let you off the hook for now."
Gaya Ze listened to their argument with a knowing smile.
"I say, Ge, could you not laugh so obnoxiously?"
Zuo Yi glanced at the completely darkened sky and said, "Can you see me smiling?"
"I can't see it, but I can feel it," Zuo Yi waved the twig in his hand.
Linyuan extended her hand in front of her. She widened her eyes, trying hard to see her fingers, but all she could make out was a blurry outline.
"Indeed, it's so dark I can't see my own hand!" she sighed as she lowered her hand.
Bang—
Linyuan bumped into something. She stumbled back two steps and rubbed her aching forehead, exclaiming, "What the hell! Who's in front of me?"
"Not me!" Zuo Yi's voice came from the right.
"Not me either!" Gaya Ze chimed in from the right.
At that moment, Chu Feifan and Su Jin'er, who had been walking behind them, caught up.
"What's wrong?" Su Jin'er asked with concern.
"Linyuan can't see the road and ran into a tree!" Zuo Yi laughed.
"Ran into a tree?" Chu Feifan exclaimed in surprise.
"No, no, it wasn't a tree. I—I clearly felt it was a person."
Linyuan's words made everyone instinctively take a few steps back. Their breathing became rapid, and their hearts started to race.
None of them had brought flashlights, so they could only move in the dark. The sudden turn of events made them all start to feel scared.
Zuo Yi poked forward with a branch he was holding but didn't touch anything. Then he shifted to the right, and the branch hit something.
"There really is something here; it doesn't feel like a tree."
His words stirred up a wave of anxiety among everyone as they began to wonder what it could be. Human imagination is limitless, and in such pitch-black darkness, they certainly wouldn't think of a comedy; instead, scenes from horror movies they had watched before flashed through their minds.
Su Jin'er took out her phone and said, "Do you all have your phones with you?"
"Phones?" Su Jin'er's words reminded them of their own devices.
Fortunately, several of them had their phones on them.
"Let's just use one for now; don't turn on the others," Su Jin'er said as she powered on her phone.
The weak light from the phone eased some of their fears, but it was still insufficient to illuminate the path ahead.
Su Jin'er turned on the flashlight feature and took a step forward. She took a deep breath, preparing herself for whatever she might see.
However, when the light from the phone illuminated that thing, she couldn't help but scream and almost threw her phone away.
"Ah—"
Linyuan's voice was immediately covered by Gaya Ze, who whispered, "Do you want to tell them our location?"
Linyuan's eyes widened in terror. Hearing Gaya Ze's words, she nodded to indicate that she wouldn't scream anymore.
It was a corpse hanging from a tree, its eyes wide open, the eyeballs nearly popping out, and its long tongue sticking out, with blood dripping down onto the ground.
"Isn't that A-Jian's crazy mother?" Su Jin'er said as she looked at the corpse.
"Right! Wasn't she insane? How could she commit suicide?" Chu Feifan added.
"I think I need to check the body."
"How can you check it in this darkness?" Zuo Yi replied.
"Let's get her down first! It's pretty scary hanging here!" Su Jin'er glanced around and said.
"I agree!" Linyuan tightly grasped Su Jin'er's arm, glancing fearfully at the corpse before lowering her head again.
"You, such a timid person, want to be a forensic doctor?" Zuo Yi remarked while looking at the trembling Linyuan.
In such pitch-black darkness, anyone would feel fear upon seeing such a corpse, especially Linyuan, who had just stumbled upon it.
She pushed Zuo Yi hard and said, "Who says I'm timid?" Yet when her gaze fell on the corpse, she instinctively shrank back.
Gaya Ze and Chu Feifan had already lowered the body. Gaya Ze examined the neck of the corpse and noticed clear strangulation marks; the rope was positioned below the throat, causing the head to droop down and the tongue to stick out.
"It's too dark to check," Gaya Ze said as he stood up, only vaguely able to see the marks on his neck.
"Let's just leave her here and go! We'll talk about it when it gets light; this place is terrifying," Linyuan trembled.
"Where can we go? It's just desolate mountains and wilderness," Zuo Yi deliberately scared her.
"I know it's desolate mountains and wilderness! But..." Linyuan hid beside Su Jin'er. "Alright! I admit I'm scared."
"Okay, Zuo Yi, stop scaring her. I don't believe you're not afraid after suddenly seeing a corpse here!" Even he, who often dealt with corpses, was frightened, let alone a girl.
"Exactly!" Linyuan pouted.
"Hush—someone's coming," Chu Feifan whispered as he pulled Su Jin'er behind a tree.
The others also found trees to hide behind.
The flashlight beam grew closer, and they held their breath, nervously watching the approaching light.
Once the person walked in, they exhaled and stepped out.
It was none other than Li Yiqian and Li Jing.
"Qian Qian!" Su Jin'er called her softly.
Li Yiqian turned around and saw them, running over joyfully. She grabbed Su Jin'er's hand and said, "You're all okay! That's great!"
Li Yiqian hugged Su Jin'er happily.
"What are you doing here?" Linyuan asked as she hugged her too.
"This is not the place to talk. Leave here first!" Li Jing said.
"Officer Li, you are here too?" Linyuan said excitedly.
"Let's go! We can talk while walking," Li Jing patted Su Jin'er's shoulder.
Chu Feifan glanced at Li Jing, his brow slightly furrowed.
Just as they had taken a few steps outside, Gaya Ze turned around and said, "What about the body?"
"The body? Whose body?" Li Jing asked in surprise; as a police officer, she was quite sensitive to the topic of corpses.
"We found a body hanging from a tree when we passed by here just now," Su Jin'er said, looking at the corpse on the ground. With the light, they could barely make out its appearance.
Li Jing looked at them suspiciously; the first person to discover the body was likely the Killer.
"You don't suspect we are the Killer, do you?" Zuo Yi said with a half-smile.
"Not yet. Until an autopsy is done, we can't determine if it was suicide or homicide."
Hearing Gaya Ze's words, Li Jing forced a stiff smile and said, "I'm not doubting you; I just find it strange that you are always present at every case."
"You don't believe us?" Su Jin'er squinted at Li Jing, now somewhat doubting this officer as well.
"It's not that I don't believe you. Until we catch the Killer, anyone could be the Killer," Li Jing squatted down and shone her flashlight on the corpse.
"Can you perform an autopsy?" Gaya Ze also crouched down and touched the deceased's neck.
Li Jing shook her head. "Who are you?"
"I am a forensic doctor from the City Criminal Investigation Team, so leave the autopsy to me!"
Li Jing frowned and said to him, "You're a forensic doctor, but how can you let them put the body down? If the scene is compromised, how will we find the Killer?"
Su Jin'er furrowed her brows and smiled as she asked her, "The forensic doctor hasn't determined whether it was a suicide or a homicide yet. Why do you keep insisting there is a Killer? You can't possibly tell at first glance that this is a murder case, can you?"
Su Jin'er's words left Li Jing momentarily stunned, and then she smiled and said, "I just think a madman wouldn't commit suicide, so..."
"How do you know she was insane?"
"I—" Li Jing lowered her head, unable to respond.
"You really are quite suspicious. Are you even a police officer?"
"Of course I'm a police officer; otherwise, how could I bring you into the Morgue?"
Li Jing's statement was correct; if she weren't a police officer, she wouldn't have been able to take them inside. However, how much of her words could actually be trusted?
Chu Feifan pulled Su Jin'er aside and shook his head at her, signaling her not to alarm the snake in the grass.
