Sitting on the damp, cold floor of the cell, Su Jin'er tightly hugged her knees. She dared not look at Chu Feifan, nor did she have the courage to ask what had happened in that room. She simply sat there quietly, not allowing him to come closer.
After a few minutes of silence, Chu Feifan sat down about a meter away from her. He looked at her and said, "I didn't do that."
Hearing his words, Su Jin'er moved slightly but kept her eyes on the ground.
"I just used a different method, so..." He didn't know what else to say or how to communicate with her.
The air fell silent again, quiet enough that they could almost hear each other's breathing.
Finally, Su Jin'er spoke up: "I don't blame you, but this matter cannot be known by others."
Her voice was very soft, as light as the air.
"Okay! So—do you forgive me?"
"You didn't do anything wrong, so there's no need for me to forgive you. And you shouldn't feel any pressure or—responsibility because of this."
"No, Jin'er, I want to take responsibility for this matter, really!" Chu Feifan said eagerly.
Su Jin'er looked at him, who seemed almost to be sweating from anxiety, and tilted her head. "But didn't you just say that you didn't do anything to me?"
"Ah!" Chu Feifan was taken aback. "I didn't do that kind of thing, but I still used a different method, so I saw your body!"
Su Jin'er was also stunned. Although she had suspected it might be like that, her face still turned bright red as she tightened her grip around herself.
"I'm sorry!" Chu Feifan said like a child who had done something wrong; he was completely at a loss in front of her.
"Why do you look even more embarrassed than I do?" Su Jin'er suddenly laughed.
Hearing her laughter, his tense nerves relaxed. He smiled and said, "Because you're different from other women; you make me feel that you're sacred and untouchable."
"Really?" Su Jin'er laughed.
"Yes! Jin'er, we've been through life and death together, so will you be my girlfriend?"
Su Jin'er frowned, but her lips couldn't help but curl into a smile. "Well... I need to think about it!"
Chu Feifan lowered his head dejectedly; when a girl says she needs to think about it, it usually means there's no hope.
Seeing him looking so downcast, Su Jin'er chuckled, "Then you have to treat me well from now on!"
He lifted his head and saw her eyes crinkled with laughter. Suddenly, he jumped up and picked Su Jin'er up from the ground, spinning her around in the cell. "Oh! Jin'er agreed to be my girlfriend!"
Laughter echoed in the cave.
Su Jin'er leaned against Chu Feifan's shoulder, her eyes slightly closed. "Do you know who that person is?"
Chu Feifan shook his head and then remembered she couldn't see it, so he said, "I don't know, but I have a thought that I'm not sure if I'm overthinking."
Su Jin'er raised her head to look at his handsome profile. "What thought?"
"Do you remember I told you about my brother?"
"I remember. You said he was burned to death on this mountain, and only his face was preserved."
"Right. I've always found it strange. No matter how much my brother loved his face, he wouldn't just protect it while ignoring the fire. And I always felt like he might not be dead."
Although Su Jin'er felt puzzled, she still believed that there could be a strange connection between family members.
"He escaped from prison so desperately; how could he have been so easily burned to death?"
"So you think your brother faked his death to evade the police, and that body was someone else's?"
"Yes!"
"But what about his face? Is there really someone who looks exactly like your brother? And even if that's the case, they should have destroyed the face." After a pause, she continued, "What's even stranger is that you didn't test the DNA when you saw the body?"
"I find it strange too, but my dad won't tell me." Chu Feifan shrugged helplessly.
"Haha—" Laughter echoed from outside the cave, and they stood up warily.
"Of course he won't tell you, because he doesn't want you to know the truth."
"Brother—" Chu Feifan exclaimed in surprise. Although he hadn't seen anyone yet, he would never forget that voice.
"My dear little brother, you are so naive to believe his words."
"What do you mean?" He looked toward the cave entrance, trying to find Chu Bufan hiding in the shadows.
"Do you really want to know?"
"Of course, I want to know everything."
"Knowing all this will do you no good, but I will still tell you the truth because—I hate you!"
Chu Feifan's body trembled violently, and Su Jin'er quickly supported him.
"Why?"
"Because of our father, our great father." Chu Bufan emphasized each word heavily, and Su Jin'er could almost see his face twisted with hatred.
"Father?" Chu Feifan was taken aback and asked in confusion, "Did you kill several people from our school?"
"Do you think I look like someone who can kill?" Chu Bufan emerged from the shadows, or rather, he was pushed out.
Upon seeing his brother sitting in a wheelchair, he exclaimed in surprise, "Your legs..."
"They're ruined, thanks to your esteemed father."
"Impossible!" He couldn't believe it. How could the father who had always urged him to find his brother possibly have crippled his own son? He clearly remembered how devastated his father had been when he learned of his son's death; that couldn't have been an act.
"Ha! It seems he played his role well in front of you!"
Chu Bufan rolled his wheelchair to the iron gate and looked at him. "If I told you that I didn't kill anyone from your school, would you believe me?"
"I would!"
Chu Bufan looked at him with a half-smile.
"Even if you didn't kill them, their deaths are still because of you. Do you know Li Yiqian?"
"Of course I know her. That foolish woman actually believed me, ha ha!"
"Did you make her kill her own sister and Li Ran?" Su Jin'er stepped forward to ask.
Chu Bufan looked at her. "Yes, next she will commit suicide, but you all stopped her."
Chu Bufan lifted his head, which had been lowered, and looked at them.
Su Jin'er recognized his features; he had a face almost identical to Chu Feifan's, but lacking the innocence that made him appear more mature. She frowned. Although they looked similar, if they stood together, it would still be easy to tell who was the brother and who was the younger sibling. Fortunately, there was no harshness in Chu Feifan's eyes.
"Brother, tell me everything."
"I will tell you, just not now. I can only share part of it with you for now; the rest will have to wait until the timing is right."
"When will the timing be right?" Su Jin'er asked.
Chu Bufan suddenly glared at her fiercely, "You're asking too many questions."
She was taken aback.
"Seven years ago, I escaped from prison intending to go home and admit my mistakes to my father. However, I unexpectedly learned some things, which led me to escape. When I came to this mountain, I met a friend who unfortunately became my substitute. He had cancer and didn't have long to live. After learning about my situation, he was willing to take my place and die for me. At first, I was reluctant, but he made me promise him one condition: as long as I agreed to that, he would help me. So I agreed, and from then on, I walked down a path of no return. I took him for plastic surgery to make him look exactly like me, and then he died. I burned his body and deliberately kept his face to deceive others. But I knew that while this could fool others, it wouldn't fool our father. Although he pretended not to look for me openly, he never stopped searching secretly. I know he wants me dead."
"Why does Father want to kill you?"
"Because I know his secret."
"What secret?"
"I can't tell you that for now. Let me tell you about Li Yiqian and her sister instead. Five years ago, Li Yiqing was admitted to this medical school. At that time, she was very much in love with her boyfriend Li Ran. However, their good times didn't last long; she met me when my leg was still fine. She took a liking to me at first sight and broke up with Li Ran. Of course, Li Ran didn't agree and repeatedly asked her for the reason. Li Yiqing refused to tell him. After being rejected multiple times, he eventually gave up. Meanwhile, my relationship with Li Yiqing remained a secret; she would come here to stay with me for two days every week, and we got along very well. However, Li Yiqian found out about this matter. Being identical twins, even their parents sometimes mistook one for the other. Li Yiqian confronted her sister Xiaoqing about why she had given up on Li Ran. Due to my disapproval, she didn't tell her sister the reason. But Li Yiqian followed her sister and found this place, and at that moment, I suddenly thought of a good way to take revenge."
