"Great! I can finally return to Earth."
Chu Feifan pulled her onto a flat area that was about the same size as the one before.
"Do you think these two places could be artificially created?"
"Could it be? Learning from Yugong Moves the Mountains, right?"
Chu Feifan shrugged, "I don't know, I'm just guessing."
"Come on, let's go ahead and see if there's a village. I'm really curious about this place." Su Jin'er said while looking around and walking forward, but they couldn't find a path, not even one that could fit a single person. Su Jin'er touched the stones on the mountain wall and said, "It seems like there's a mechanism here."
"No way! Would there really be something like that now?"
Su Jin'er raised an eyebrow and remained silent.
Chu Feifan recalled the mechanism he discovered in his father's study two years ago. He didn't understand why his father had set up a mechanism there. When he saw it, an ominous feeling prevented him from investigating further; he feared that he would lose even the little respect he had for his father.
"Hey! What are you daydreaming about? I found the mechanism and need your help," Su Jin'er said, standing in front of a large stone embedded in the mountain wall.
"Are we really dealing with a mechanism? Uh—now I'm starting to get curious about the people living inside."
"Look! It's right here." Su Jin'er pointed to a spot not far from that stone.
There was a stone shaped like a pebble, with a very small pentagram drawn in one corner.
"How did you know that it's the button for the mechanism?"
"Just a feeling. Come on, let's figure out how to open this together," Su Jin'er said while stroking her chin.
Chu Feifan crossed his arms and squinted at Su Jin'er, saying, "You've changed; you're not the same as when we first met."
"What has changed?"
"Your vibe! When I first met you, I thought you were proud, not very talkative, and even a bit condescending."
Su Jin'er glared at him. "Am I really that bad?"
"Not bad, but your beauty is so striking that it gives off an aura of being sacred and untouchable, pure like an angel."
"Well! I don't know if you're insulting me or complimenting me, but I can share my feelings."
Chu Feifan frowned, urging her to continue.
"I don't think my looks are particularly outstanding. However, like anyone else, I feel secretly pleased when someone praises my beauty. But when it happens too often, it makes me uncomfortable. In this world, if someone likes you, there will always be someone who dislikes you, and it's even more pronounced for beautiful people. If you're warm and friendly, some will say you're promiscuous; if you're cold and distant, they'll say you look down on others. No matter what you do, those who dislike you will always find reasons to make you feel awkward. Am I right?"
"I didn't realize you were so cynical!"
"Everyone has their moments."
Chu Feifan smiled; it seemed this arrangement was right. At least she had opened up and shared her true feelings with him, which made him secretly happy.
Meanwhile, Zuo Yi and Linyuan were looking for Professor Zhang.
"I once went to see the counselor with Jin'er. He told us that five years ago, aside from the dean, two people remained at the school: the late Old Man Liu and that strange Professor Zhang," Linyuan said.
"Do you know where Professor Zhang's office is?"
"I don't know, we can ask!"
They walked towards the teachers' dormitory building. The school had dormitories for both teachers and students, but there were fewer teachers, so the academy built two dormitory buildings, each with five floors. As for which building Professor Zhang was in and which room, they had no idea.
"Let's find a teacher to ask!" Zuo Yi suggested.
"Okay!"
Upon entering the dormitory building, they found that the teachers' dormitory also had a dormitory manager like the students' dormitory. Zuo Yi knocked on the window, and a teacher inside looked up. He was a slightly plump man, around forty years old.
"Excuse me, I would like to ask which dormitory Professor Zhang lives in."
The man adjusted his glasses and said, "We have two Professor Zhangs at our school; one teaches Dissection, and the other teaches Chemistry. I'm not sure which one you are looking for."
Zuo Yi glanced at Linyuan, who shook her head. They both didn't know which Professor Zhang the counselor was referring to.
"Which one has more seniority?" Zuo Yi asked.
"The one who teaches Chemistry. What do you need him for? You can't be his students, right?" The man leaned back in his chair, revealing his round belly.
"As students of this school, we should know about its history, so we came to inquire," Zuo Yi replied with a smile.
"Oh! Is that so? The teacher you are looking for is on the third floor of this building, room 304."
"Thank you, sir."
"Am I that old? I prefer you call me brother," he said with a smile, revealing his yellowed teeth.
Zuo Yi looked at Linyuan with a helpless raise of his eyebrows, then pulled her upstairs.
"Hey, I forgot to tell you, he's a tough one to deal with. Be careful!" The voice of the uncle came from behind.
"It seems that professor really has a strange temper. We need to discuss how to handle this," Linyuan said.
"Let's play it by ear! No matter how strange he is, he's still human, and every human has weaknesses. Besides, we don't even know what makes him so strange; discussing it won't yield much," Zuo Yi replied.
Linyuan nodded.
"Chu Feifan, have you figured out how to open it after staring at it for so long? If we don't hurry up, we'll be stuck here," Su Jin'er said, looking at Chu Feifan who was still focused on the stone.
Chu Feifan didn't answer. He placed his index finger on the small star-shaped mark and turned the stone. After a series of "clunking" sounds, the massive stone began to move aside.
"It's open!" Su Jin'er exclaimed excitedly.
Chu Feifan glanced inside and said, "We didn't bring a flashlight. Are you sure you want to go in?"
"We're already here; why not go in?" Su Jin'er stepped inside.
The cave was very dark, and she couldn't see anything. She turned on her phone's flashlight and took a quick look around. There was enough space for two people to walk side by side, and the ground was littered with loose stones, some of which were damp.
"Hey! Are you coming in?" Su Jin'er asked without turning back.
"I'm right behind you." How could he possibly not follow her?
"Do you walk without making any noise?"
"It's not that I walk silently, but you're too focused on what's in front of you." He also opened his phone and stood with Su Jin'er, looking at the stones on the ground.
"Turn off your phone! Save the battery in case we need to make a distress call," Su Jin'er pointed at his phone.
"Let's go!"
Chu Feifan walked ahead, carefully holding Su Jin'er's hand. "What do you think this cave leads to?"
"Who knows!" They walked a bit further, and the cave turned left.
"It's quite warm in here; our immortal is really clever," Chu Feifan said.
"I'm starting to get curious about where this cave ends. I hope we don't come across several openings to choose from."
As if to validate Su Jin'er's words, the cave ahead became wider. When the width was enough for a dozen people to stand side by side, five openings appeared before them, and they looked at each other.
"I'm really a jinx!" Su Jin'er joked.
"How do we choose?"
The five dark openings seemed like five monsters with gaping mouths, waiting for prey to walk into their jaws, ready to devour them without leaving a bone behind.
"How do we choose?" Su Jin'er asked the same question and then suggested, "Why don't we split up?"
"That won't work! What if there's danger?"
"Then let's pick one and go in together to see what it's like?"
Chu Feifan nodded.
They chose the leftmost entrance.
At the door of Room 304, Zuo Yi and Linyuan stood there. Zuo Yi gently knocked on the door, but there was no response from inside. The two exchanged glances, and he raised his hand to knock a few more times. He pressed his ear against the door, and suddenly, it swung open from the inside, startling both of them as they stared blankly at the person before them.
"What do you want?" The voice was slightly hoarse with a heavy nasal tone, making them uncomfortable.
"Professor Zhang, we have some questions we'd like to ask you."
"What questions?"
Zuo Yi looked at him and said, "We want to learn about the history of the school. Do you have time?"
"The history of the school?" He chuckled, his voice sounding like it was breaking: "It's rare to find students wanting to know about the school's history. However, the school's archive should have what you need."
After saying that, he attempted to close the door, but Zuo Yi quickly blocked it with his hand: "There are some things that won't be recorded in there, so I thought you might know better."
Professor Zhang raised his head, his small eyes fixed intently on Zuo Yi. Linyuan was so frightened that he hid behind Zuo Yi. Professor Zhang's eyes were tiny, with much more white than pupil, giving him a chilling appearance.
"I won't tell you anything. Besides, why should I tell you?" His voice suddenly turned sharp, like nails on a chalkboard.
"Professor Zhang, you should be well aware of what happened five years ago. Why did the school replace all teachers except for you? Why hasn't the school removed you? The matters here must be related to you, right?"
Upon hearing about the events from five years ago, Professor Zhang's body swayed slightly; although not very noticeable, Zuo Yi caught it.
"I don't know anything." Professor Zhang refused to listen to another word from them and directly shut the door.
Zuo Yi knocked on the door again, but no matter how hard he knocked, there was no response from inside.
"It seems we need to find another way," Zuo Yi said helplessly.
"He looks really terrifying." As she walked down the stairs, Linyuan finally let out a sigh of relief. Looking at the professor, she felt an indescribable sense of oppression, a heavy aura of death that made it hard for her to breathe. She couldn't understand why the dean would allow such a person to become a professor.
"Did you see clearly?"
Linyuan shook her head. "It was too dark to see clearly; I could only see his eyes. They were so frightening, like a cat's eyes, sending chills down my spine. If it weren't for the investigation, I wouldn't come here even if you killed me."
"He was wearing a black mask, so we could only see his eyes."
"You saw them?"
"I was talking about five years ago; his body swayed a bit. It seems something truly terrible happened five years ago."
"So what do we do next?"
"Let's find the Student Union Chairman."
