Many times, we hope for miracles to happen, and many times we know clearly that miracles will not occur. Yet, we still hold onto great hope, praying repeatedly to deities that do not exist in our hearts, wishing they could take the time to open their eyes and see us, to help us.
Time quietly slips away through our fingers; apart from losing time, we gain nothing. The outside world is bustling with life, the sky illuminated by various fireworks, and everyone wears joyful smiles. Children hold hands, singing and dancing together, while the winter cold is melted away by happiness.
"Jin'er, tomorrow is New Year's Eve. Please don't sleep any longer. We are all waiting for you to open your eyes and wish us a Happy New Year!" Chu Feifan said, holding Su Jin'er's hand close to his lips.
Linyuan has already gone home, while Li Yiqian has been left at home by Lily since she no longer has family. She feels both happy and touched, with a lot to say to Su Jin'er.
"What exactly has kept you in this deep sleep? Was it intentional or an accident? I'm so foolish; I should have stayed by your side until you woke up."
"Qian Qian, please stop blaming yourself. This is her fate! However, we should be grateful, right? Jin'er has been in a coma for so long without showing any signs of brain death. That's a good sign; maybe one day she will suddenly wake up." Lily said as she patted Li Yiqian's shoulder.
Lily is an elegant woman; she appears fragile but is strong inside. While her only daughter lies unconscious in bed, other mothers might have crumbled under the pressure long ago. Yet she can still comfort others—perhaps that is what makes her admirable and respected. Jin'er happens to inherit her mother's strengths.
Li Yiqian nodded; she felt guilty for not revealing the whole truth at first and regretted not believing them. If it weren't for her, Su Jin'er would surely be happily setting off fireworks with her friends!
"Auntie, it's getting late; I should head back now. Tomorrow is New Year's Eve, so I won't come over. If Jin'er wakes up, please call me." Chu Feifan stood up, unwilling to take his eyes off Su Jin'er.
"Okay! Thank you for being here during this time. Please wish your parents a Happy New Year for me!"
Chu Feifan nodded and then walked out of the room.
The sounds of fireworks, firecrackers, and children's laughter became annoying noise in Chu Feifan's ears at that moment. The sounds seemed far away yet very close—far enough to belong to another world but near enough to feel like they were right beside him. He irritably turned the car key; the crowd on the road surged like a tide, and the cars crawled along like snails. He honked incessantly, drawing angry shouts from those around him, but he didn't care at all. If Su Jin'er were beside him, he would gladly keep the car stationary without moving an inch just to see her smile.
Finally, the crowd began to move again as Chu Feifan drove forward when suddenly a question popped into his mind: they seemed to have forgotten a crucial point. After Zhang Yang killed Xu Mengguang, Xu Mengguang's body disappeared for several days. When it reappeared, it had been thrown from the girls' dormitory building; at that time, the body had been frozen and drained of blood. Who drained his blood and why did they do this?
Suddenly, the phone on Su Jin'er's bedside table rang. Li Yiqian glanced at it and then handed it to Su Jin'er's mother.
"Hello!"
"Hello, is this Su Jin'er's phone?"
"Yes, may I ask who you are?"
"Oh! I'm Li Jing, a friend of Jin'er. How is she doing now?"
Lily covered the receiver and asked Li Yiqian if she knew Li Jing, to which Li Yiqian shook her head.
"Hello, she is still in a coma."
There was a moment of silence on the other end. "Auntie, if Jin'er wakes up, please have her call me. Just say it's Officer Li, okay?"
Lily was taken aback, realizing it was a police officer. "Alright."
The next morning, Li Yiqian pushed open Su Jin'er's door as usual, preparing to feed her some breakfast. Upon entering, she was surprised to see someone standing by the window.
"Jin'er!"
She called out with a trembling voice.
Su Jin'er slowly turned around and was also startled when she saw Li Yiqian. "Qian Qian, how did you escape? Did Zhang Yang hurt you again?"
Li Yiqian's eyes filled with tears. "Auntie, come quickly, Jin'er..."
Hearing Li Yiqian's shout, Lily rushed over. She looked at Su Jin'er standing at the door and tears streamed down her face. "Jin'er, my daughter, you finally woke up. You scared your mother to death."
Su Jin'er hugged her mother and also shed tears as the three of them sat down on the bed.
"Mom, how long have I been asleep?"
"About half a month! You really scared your mother."
"I'm sorry, Mom, for making you worry." She held Lily's hand and then looked at Li Yiqian, saying, "Qian Qian, how did you escape?"
"It was Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi who rescued me. They found the clues and then got me out."
"Did they get hurt?"
"No, they're fine. And during the time you were unconscious, Chu Feifan came to keep you company every day. He was here yesterday! Today is New Year's Eve, so he didn't come."
Su Jin'er lowered her head, her face turning red.
"You guys chat first; Feifan asked me to call him!"
Watching her mother leave, Su Jin'er asked Li Yiqian, "I remember my lost memories now. How could Zhang Yang use hypnosis? And can it really erase someone's memory?"
"I don't know either. He appeared suddenly and forced me to comply with his twisted behavior. That day, I didn't expect you to go alone. Why were you so foolish?"
Su Jin'er didn't respond but instead asked, "I remember someone calling me. I opened my eyes groggily and saw a person in black waving something in front of my eyes, and then I fainted again. When I woke up, I had forgotten everything that happened."
"The doctor said you inhaled a strange gas that caused confusion in your thoughts. Maybe it was because the amount you inhaled wasn't large. The doctor said if you hadn't woken up, it could have led to brain death."
Su Jin'er gasped in shock. Thankfully, she had held her breath out of fear at that moment, which saved her life. She wondered if Chu Feifan and the others had found any other clues. Although she had regained her memory, she realized it wasn't much help for the case.
"I'm really useless; I fell for it at such a critical moment," she said with a smile.
At that moment, hurried and chaotic footsteps sounded from outside the door.
"Jin'er!" Linyuan rushed in from outside and tightly hugged Su Jin'er, tears streaming down her face.
Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi followed behind Linyuan. Chu Feifan looked at Su Jin'er and said, "This is the best gift I've received this Spring Festival."
"Can you tell me what happened while I was gone?"
"Nothing much happened, just that we found the person who killed Xu Mengguang."
"No, I think Xu Mengguang might not have been killed by Zhang Yang. There are still a few doubts that haven't been clarified," Su Jin'er said.
"I think so too, but what doubts do you have?"
"First, who stole Xu Mengguang's body, drained the blood, and then threw it down from the dormitory building? Second, why was it in the girls' dormitory? Third, what was the purpose of draining the blood? Fourth, were those two men in black the same person?"
"I can answer the fourth question," Li Yiqian said as she looked at her. "The man in black who appeared at school was me."
Su Jin'er looked at her in surprise. "How could it be you? Also, you could have escaped; why didn't you?"
"I—Zhang Yang forced me. He recorded a video of him assaulting me to threaten me, forbidding me to report it or escape, so I—" Her voice grew smaller and slowly turned into quiet sobs.
"Zhang Yang is a beast; I must kill him," Zuo Yi said angrily.
"Jin'er, although I no longer have family, I still have relatives who look down on us. Originally, because my sister got into college, their perception of us changed. But after my sister died, they looked down on us even more. So I can't let them know that I've been humiliated. If they find out about that video, what will they think? How will they scold me? My parents wouldn't forgive me even in death," Li Yiqian was already in tears.
"Zhang Yang is our roommate; why didn't you tell us earlier? We could have searched the dormitory!" Chu Feifan frowned.
"Zhang Yang is very cautious; he definitely wouldn't keep it in the dormitory."
"Then let's search when we return to school and destroy it once we find it," Zuo Yi said.
"Chu Feifan, have you found any clues about the other deceased?" Su Jin'er asked Chu Feifan.
Chu Feifan shook his head. "No, but we encountered two people on the mountain. From their conversation, we learned that there seems to be a village up there, and something seems to have happened in that village."
"Didn't you follow them to see what was going on?"
Chu Feifan lowered his head. "At that time, Linyuan called and said you were in danger, so we came back."
"Why didn't you follow them? You might have found important clues."
"I was really worried about you," Chu Feifan said anxiously. Now that Su Jin'er had woken up, he was happier than anyone else.
Then they shared everything about their search for the dean, and Su Jin'er recounted what they had encountered.
"Jin'er, there's something I don't know if it relates to what we've experienced. I don't want to involve you, but I think it's better to tell you."
"What is it?" Su Jin'er frowned.
"It's about my brother."
