They found a hotel that looked quite nice and walked in, sitting down at a table placed in the corner. From there, they could see the entire restaurant. Each ordered a rice bowl and slowly sipped the tea brought by the Boss.
"The business here seems pretty good!" Linyuan said, taking a sip of her tea while glancing around the restaurant.
"Mm!" Su Jin'er replied absentmindedly, still thinking about Du Xiaonan's words, wondering where that forest she mentioned was located.
"Alright, let your brain take a break! When the Boss comes over later, we can ask him where the forest is."
"Hehe! How did you know what I was thinking?"
"Oh come on! With those thoughts in your head, how could I not know?"
At that moment, a very plump middle-aged woman came over with their meals.
"Boss, do you know if there's a forest nearby?" Linyuan asked with a smile.
The Boss looked at the two of them and said, "You must be students from Yijiang Medical College, right?"
"Yes."
"I heard there have been quite a few incidents at your school recently! Is that true?" Jin'er looked at her helplessly; this woman seemed to be the Landlady and quite the gossip.
Linyuan grinned and said, "Are you really curious about it, Auntie?"
"With such serious incidents happening, everyone in town is on edge. Families with children studying there are terrified," the Landlady said with a frown.
"Don't worry! The police will definitely catch the Killer," Su Jin'er said as she popped a piece of tofu into her mouth.
"Police?" The Landlady sat down beside them and said, "Let me tell you a secret! Those incidents were not caused by humans; they were caused by those things. It's something we can't stop with our human strength."
Hearing the Landlady's words, Linyuan coughed repeatedly, while Su Jin'er gently patted her back and asked, "How do you know it wasn't human-made?"
"You just asked if there are any woods nearby, right? There are, but no one dares to go there now. At midnight, you can hear the chilling cries of a woman coming from there. It's particularly frightening; who would dare to go? I advise you not to go there," the Old Matron said mysteriously.
"Crying of a woman? What happened there?" Su Jin'er put down her chopsticks and listened intently to every word she said.
"Four years ago, a very handsome young man suddenly came to our town, around twenty years old. He was strange; he didn't stay in town and insisted on living alone in the woods. Our town was very peaceful before he arrived; there had never been a murder here, but after he came, things started happening."
"What kind of things?"
"Someone was killed, and it was particularly gruesome. I remember the first girl who died was named Liu Xiaofang. She was very beautiful, but she was murdered."
"Was she killed by that young man?" Linyuan asked excitedly.
The Landlady shook her head and said, "I don't know; the police couldn't find out. It's just sad for that girl; she died without being able to clear her name."
"Are you saying that girl was raped and killed?"
"Yes! How tragic!"
"Where was the body found?"
"It was in that strange house in the woods! After that, the chilling cries began to echo through the forest."
As Su Jin'er was about to ask another question, a customer walked in. The Landlady smiled and told them to take their time eating before attending to the customer.
"I think we've found a clue," Su Jin'er said with a smile after the Landlady left.
"Is it about that forest and that strange house? Maybe these have nothing to do with our investigation!" Linyuan shrugged, looking helplessly at the cold food in front of her.
"How about we ask the Landlady to heat it up for us?" Su Jin'er raised an eyebrow and smiled.
"Sure!"
By the time they finished lunch, it was already two o'clock. The Landlady refused to tell them the exact location of the forest because she feared they might encounter danger there. Initially, she thought that by keeping quiet about the forest, they would be scared off and not go there. However, it had the opposite effect, and now she regretted her decision.
The Landlady was standing in the kitchen talking to her husband. "Do you think they will encounter danger? They are so beautiful."
Her husband rubbed his round belly and said, "We've done what we should have done. If something really happens, then it's just bad luck for them!"
Su Jin'er and Linyuan walked down the street, where vendors lined both sides with various stalls, their shouts filling the air of the entire town.
"Why do you think those police can't find any evidence? They must at least investigate the scene and look for fingerprints or footprints! It's like they don't know anything at all," Linyuan suddenly brought up this question.
Su Jin'er had thought about it too, but the chances of such a murder happening in this small town were very slim. The police seemed more like a show of force to intimidate ordinary citizens.
Since the murder occurred, the police had only come to take away the body without even conducting basic investigations before leaving, and they hadn't returned since.
Suddenly, a commotion erupted not far down the street; it was loud, as if someone was fighting.
"Let's go take a look," Linyuan said happily as she grabbed Su Jin'er's hand and ran over.
"Xiaoyuan, we still have things to do!"
They squeezed into the crowd and saw a burly man in the center beating an elderly man who looked frail, cursing as he struck him.
"How can he hit an old man?" Su Jin'er said angrily.
"Exactly, why isn't anyone stepping in to stop this? Are these people just here to watch?"
"Is this guy insane?" Su Jin'er said in frustration, looking around for a stick or a stone.
"Little girl, it's better not to get involved. This man is a notorious thug in our town; no one dares to provoke him," an older man beside them said.
"What about the police? Are they all dead?" Linyuan shouted angrily.
"Sigh..." the old man sighed helplessly.
Su Jin'er spotted a not-too-thick stick nearby, ran over to grab it, and then walked toward the man.
Linyuan quickly pulled her back, saying, "Jin'er, as angry as you are, you can't take him on."
"I can't stand people like this. Even if I can't win, I still want to fight back." She was furious, fully aware that if she went over and hit him, he would crush her like an ant, yet she still wanted to confront him.
Seeing the determined expression on Su Jin'er's face, Linyuan picked up a stone from the ground and held it in her hand. Even if they couldn't defeat him, they would make sure he felt some pain.
"Little girl, don't go, it's dangerous!" The old man tried to persuade the two of them.
"It's fine, sir!" Su Jin'er said with a smile.
The man was still beating the old man, and he seemed to be hitting harder now. He had started with his hands, but now he was kicking, and the old man's cries were unbearable to watch.
Su Jin'er and Linyuan flanked him from both sides, slowly approaching him. It seemed that someone in the crowd had realized their intentions and gradually shrank the circle to conceal their actions. Just as they were two meters away from the big man, they suddenly charged forward, swinging their "weapons" down hard onto his head.
"Ouch!"
"Run!"
Su Jin'er grabbed Linyuan and ran toward the crowd. The big man cursed loudly, kicked the old man again, and then began to chase after Su Jin'er and Linyuan, clutching his bleeding head.
The people around them were in chaos, blocking the big man's pursuit.
The big man was squeezed in the crowd, cursing, "You little brats, just wait until I catch you; I'll skin you alive."
Su Jin'er pulled Linyuan all the way out of town. They bent over, panting heavily, and suddenly burst into laughter.
"I didn't expect our beautiful Su would do something like this; today has really opened my eyes," Linyuan laughed so hard she could barely catch her breath, holding her stomach.
"Who told that guy to be so despicable! And those people in town are really infuriating; they just stood by and watched," Su Jin'er said angrily with her hands on her hips.
Seeing her stance, Linyuan laughed so hard she nearly rolled on the ground.
Su Jin'er smiled; she did this on purpose, feeling quite sorry for Linyuan, who was caught in such fear.
She looked around and realized that everything here was unfamiliar. In their panic, they had no idea where they had run to.
"Linyuan, it seems like we are lost," she said nervously.
At this moment, they could no longer see the town from where they stood. Su Jin'er glanced at her watch; it was already three-thirty. The sky was overcast, and it looked like it might snow again.
All they could see was a vast expanse of white. The snow on the ground was thick and clean, with nothing but their footprints left behind.
"What should we do now?" Linyuan slowly approached Jin'er, nervously watching their surroundings for any signs of movement.
This place was not flat; although the medical school was at the foot of the mountain, its geographical position was still higher than that of the town. Yet the town that had been behind them just moments ago seemed to have vanished as if it never existed.
"Jin'er, I feel like we've jumped into a trap that someone else has already set up for us. This trap is deep and terrifying."
Su Jin'er nodded, sensing that whoever was behind this must be targeting her. But why not just attack her directly?
"How could we be so foolish! The snow is so thick; there must be footprints left from when we came up. If we just follow those footprints, we can return to the town!" Jin'er said with a hint of amusement as she looked at the surprised Linyuan.
"You're right! We really are foolish."
However, when they turned their gaze to the ground, they discovered that the frightening reality was far worse than they thought!
The chaotic footprints they had left in the snow had completely disappeared.
It has disappeared! There is truly nothing left.
"Who is playing tricks here? Come out! If I catch you, I will make sure to tear you to pieces!" Linyuan shouted into the void.
An even stranger thing happened; Linyuan's voice echoed as if it were in a closed room, lingering for a long time.
"How is this possible?" Her voice trembled. In such an empty place, how could there be an echo? Even facing a mountain, such reverberation shouldn't occur!
"Jin'er, we need to leave here immediately, hurry!" Linyuan said with a pale face.
Snowflakes began to fall from the sky, and the temperature around them started to drop.
"This place is so open; which direction should we run?" Since childhood, Su Jin'er had been directionally challenged and couldn't tell east from west. Now, standing in this snowy wasteland, she couldn't think of anything.
Strange things happen every year, but this year seems particularly full of them!
