Linyuan cautiously looked at the cabinet against the wall, knowing without a doubt what it was for; each compartment contained a frozen, stiff corpse.
Li Jing stopped in front of the bed at the back and pointed at the body on top, saying, "This is Old Man Liu's corpse. Come take a look! But remember, you can't tell anyone about why I brought you here today!"
As a criminal police officer, Li Jing remained unfazed in front of so many corpses; she could even smile.
Su Jin'er nodded as Li Jing pulled back the sheet covering the body, allowing them to come closer.
The corpse was completely stiff, with Grandpa Liu's smile frozen on his face.
Su Jin'er turned her head away, unwilling to look any longer. "Are the other three bodies here too?"
"Yes!" Li Jing covered the body with a white cloth and glanced at the other deceased. "When we found Xu Mengguang's body, he was already dead, and all his blood had been drained."
"Even if all the blood was drained, there should be some blood spilled when he was thrown down from upstairs! But there are no traces of blood at the scene."
"A frozen corpse can't possibly bleed!"
"Frozen?"
The killer was so cruel that after killing someone, they would freeze the body and then throw it down from upstairs.
"By the way, one of the family involved in the car accident earlier is from your school; her name is Wu Nannan. Do you know her?"
"What?" Su Jin'er and Linyuan exclaimed in surprise, their voices loud enough to startle the corpse on the bed.
"Wu Nannan is dead too?" Linyuan nearly fainted.
"What happened in the car accident?" Su Jin'er asked nervously. People around her were dying one by one, and she didn't know who would be next!
"We didn't see any skid marks at the scene, which means there were no brakes applied at that moment. Generally speaking, it's impossible not to have any skid marks; everyone instinctively protects themselves when faced with danger. Even if they couldn't brake in time, there would still be some evidence of braking. Yet there was absolutely nothing!" She shook her head helplessly. "Don't you want to see the other three bodies?"
Su Jin'er shook her head; her mind was in chaos. She didn't understand forensic science and couldn't make sense of what she saw. She walked straight out of the Morgue, feeling as if she were trapped in a completely dark room where she couldn't even tell which direction to go.
This was already the fifth one: Xu Mengguang, Li Ran, Zhang Junsheng, Grandpa Liu, Wu Nannan. Did their deaths have any connection? What was the killer's purpose? Or was the killer simply a psychopath who killed indiscriminately?
But as long as it was done by a person, there would definitely be clues left behind. But what are the clues? Where should she start looking? Why was there no lead at all?
Sitting on a bench in the park, she painfully closed her eyes.
"Jin'er, stop thinking about it. Don't force yourself; you're too tired."
"Xiaoyuan, I really want to know what happened on the day I lost my memory. It must be very important. I feel that if I can remember it, all the puzzles will be solved." She opened her eyes and saw the mental hospital across from her. "Let's go see Du Xiaonan! Maybe she can tell us something."
Du Xiaonan sat quietly on her bed, staring blankly out the window with no expression on her face. Upon hearing footsteps behind her, she said, "Let me out; I don't want to stay here."
"Xiaonan, it's us!" Seeing Du Xiaonan's frail body, Linyuan said with a trembling voice.
Hearing her voice, Du Xiaonan suddenly turned around. Her face was pale, with heavy dark circles under her eyes, and her lips had no color.
"Jin'er, Xiaoyuan, please tell them to let me out! I'm really not sick; I'm normal, truly!" Tears streamed down Du Xiaonan's cheeks. Aside from looking a bit haggard, she hardly seemed like a mental patient.
They looked at her in surprise. Not long ago, Du Xiaonan didn't even recognize them, but seeing her now, perhaps she really had recovered.
"Can we talk to her alone?" Su Jin'er asked the nurse beside them.
The nurse thought for a moment and said, "The patient's emotions are very unstable, so please don't provoke her."
Su Jin'er nodded at her and then stepped outside with the nurse.
"Xiaonan, do you recognize us now?" Linyuan asked excitedly once the nurse left.
Du Xiaonan nodded through tears: "I woke up on the third day after coming here."
"Do you remember where you and Li Yiqian went and what happened?" Su Jin'er asked eagerly, completely unaware that Du Xiaonan had already regained consciousness.
"Yes, I remember everything. I could never forget that day; it was really terrifying. Qian Qian heard from somewhere that her sister had stayed in a mental hospital before she died, so she wanted to come here to investigate about her sister. But before we even got here, we were knocked out."
"Are you sure both of you were knocked out?"
Du Xiaonan thought for a moment and said, "I was knocked out first, as for Qian Qian, I don't know. Actually, when we came here, Qian Qian didn't agree to come with me. She said it might be dangerous, but I thought it would be safer with two people than one. She didn't say anything along the way and kept frowning tightly, looking quite nervous."
"What happened next?" Linyuan asked eagerly.
"What happened next?" Du Xiaonan showed a look of terror, her eyes staring out the window. "Later, Qian Qian suddenly asked us to get off the bus halfway. She said she remembered something else, so I followed her off. I remember it was a small forest. When we walked into the woods, for some reason, the sky suddenly turned dark and the wind picked up. The wind was strange; it wasn't very strong, but it blurred my vision. Then I saw something I could never forget for the rest of my life."
Su Jin'er and Linyuan were both nervously sweating; perhaps Du Xiaonan's story could provide important clues.
"I vaguely saw many shadows appearing in front of the forest, some white, some black, twisted together. I thought I was seeing things and rubbed my eyes, but when I opened them again, I saw a face covered in blood, almost pressed against mine. The strong smell of blood hit my nose, making me want to vomit, but my body couldn't move at all. I could see that face grinning grotesquely at me, its twisted features ugly and gathered together. There were even white worms wriggling in its eyes, nose, and mouth. My body completely refused to obey me; I couldn't move an inch.
At that moment, I thought I'd rather die than endure such torment."
"What about Li Yiqian? Where is she?" Thinking of that scene made Su Jin'er tremble with fear.
"I couldn't see her at all; even my eyeballs couldn't move. Later, I felt a sharp pain at the back of my head and then passed out. When I woke up again, I found myself tied up and unable to move on the cold ground. It was a completely enclosed room with only a small window near the ceiling. There was no light in the room; it was like being blind. However, I could sense that there was another person in the room with me. I was terrified and felt as if I had died. So I tried to call out Qian Qian's name, but no one answered for a long time. Yet I could clearly hear another person's breathing."
Linyuan wanted to say something but was stopped by Su Jin'er.
"Then I caught a whiff of a strange fragrance and fainted again."
After hearing Du Xiaonan's "story," they took a deep breath; they were drenched in sweat as if they had just run a marathon, while Du Xiaonan seemed to have returned to that day, her teeth chattering and her body trembling uncontrollably.
"Jin'er, I'm begging you to talk to the doctor and let me out! This place is not meant for people; even if you don't go crazy here, you'll be tormented into madness."
Su Jin'er also wished she could leave, but now the school was in chaos; perhaps staying here was safer than being at school. Thinking this way, Su Jin'er comforted her by saying, "I know this isn't a place for people to stay, but you can't leave yet; maybe you'll be safer here."
"Why?" Hearing Su Jin'er's words made Du Xiaonan nearly go crazy as she asked hoarsely.
Su Jin'er told her everything that had happened recently at school and why Du Xiaonan was in the psychiatric hospital. Although she didn't want to increase her fear, if she didn't tell Du Xiaonan this information, she would definitely not stay here obediently.
After listening to Su Jin'er's words, Du Xiaonan unconsciously touched her neck; she actually wanted to strangle herself. If it weren't for Su Jin'er and the others arriving in time, she would surely be lying cold in the Morgue right now.
"Jin'er, why are so many terrifying things happening? Is it really Xiaoqing's doing? Could Qian Qian have already been killed?" Du Xiaonan tightly grasped Su Jin'er and Linyuan's hands.
"I don't know, I have no clue at all."
The clues they had were no more than what the police possessed. They thought that finding Du Xiaonan would lead to a breakthrough, but things became even more confusing.
"Xiaonan, for now, you have to stay here. I know being with a group of mentally ill people can drive anyone mad, but perhaps here is where you are safest. I need to recover the memories I've lost," Su Jin'er said weakly. If she had stuck to her decision not to study medicine back then, she would be living an ordinary college life like other students.
However, deep inside her, there was a small thrill. She had always admired Sherlock Holmes for his intelligence and attention to detail. She even wished to be like him and become a female detective. But now that the opportunity had come, she felt scared and completely lost. Taking a deep breath, she stood up and said, "Xiaonan, you stay here! Don't let anyone think you're better; keep pretending to be crazy so you won't be in danger."
"Okay, you all be careful!"
"Mm!"
After leaving the mental hospital, Su Jin'er let out a long sigh of relief. She glanced back at the heavy door; the atmosphere inside was so oppressive it made one want to commit suicide. No sane person would want to stay in there!
"Jin'er, where are we going now?"
Su Jin'er looked at her watch; it was already one in the afternoon, and they hadn't eaten lunch yet. She glanced at nearby restaurants and said, "Let's go eat first! We can analyze the situation we encountered while we eat."
