"Jin'er, what exactly happened? Don't you remember anything?" Linyuan asked as he took her hand.
She nodded, "Yes, I lost my memory of this period. I only remember it snowing, then I closed my eyes and saw a private car. The car was driving steadily, but for some reason, I felt very scared. I thought about the movie we watched, 'The Grim Reaper Is Here,' which made me even more frightened. I desperately wanted to open my eyes but found that I couldn't. So I started hoping you would wake me up. Just when a big truck was about to crash into the private car, you woke me up."
"I? Woke you up?" Linyuan exclaimed, his mouth agape in surprise. "How could I have woken you up? You were so tired when you came back yesterday; I wanted you to sleep more! When I finished washing up and came back, I just happened to see you opening your eyes!"
Su Jin'er closed her eyes and frowned. The recent events had completely exceeded her capacity to cope. Her inexplicable amnesia made everything even more bizarre.
"What a vivid dream! Even the scenes I saw in the dream felt so real."
"Whose private car was it? Did you see the license plate? What color was it?" Linyuan asked while playing with his fingers.
Hearing his question, Su Jin'er was stunned. She didn't know the color of the car or the license plate number. The images in her dream were so clear; not knowing the license plate number might be explainable, but why didn't she know the color of the car? Did it have no color at all?
She was startled by her own thoughts. How could there be no color? No color should mean it was white, but that car definitely wasn't white!
She rubbed her temples in frustration; perhaps she really was too tired! Recently, her mind had been in a constant state of tension, so having strange dreams wasn't impossible.
"What time is it now?" Su Jin'er asked as she got out of bed.
"It's nine o'clock."
"Let's go to the police station! I want to ask about Grandpa Liu's autopsy report."
"Will they tell us? We're just students!"
"That depends on Officer Li's capability!"
Their school was at the foot of the mountain, while the police station was located about five kilometers away in a small town. There was also a bus service between the school and the town, and at that moment, Su Jin'er and Linyuan were sitting on this bus.
Su Jin'er rested her head against the window, eyes closed as she pondered her thoughts. Most of the students had already left the school, which might mean that no one would die today. A wave of sorrow suddenly washed over her. What exactly was the memory she lost that day? What had she discovered in Li Yiqian's belongings? Perhaps the person who caused her memory loss was the Killer, but why hadn’t he killed her? Why only erase her memory?
Too many questions left her feeling anxious. She opened her eyes to see Linyuan beside her, eyes closed, seemingly asleep.
Exhausted, she rubbed her temples and turned her gaze outside.
A sudden chill swept over her, as if ice had stuck to her back, leaving it stiff and cold.
Fear crept through her body; she felt that even the slightest movement would make her bones creak.
The cold and malicious gaze from behind seemed intent on swallowing her whole. Her scalp tingled, and she found herself too scared to move an inch.
Finally, summoning her courage, she turned around abruptly. There was no malicious gaze behind her, just a few male students sitting quietly, looking at their phones.
Confused, she turned back. This feeling reminded her of walking alone on a dark road as a child—wanting to run quickly to escape the terrifying footsteps behind her but fearing that any noise would awaken whatever lurked in the night. So she could only walk cautiously step by step. When she finally gathered enough courage to look back, there was nothing there.
Linyuan beside her seemed to be sleeping uncomfortably, frowning slightly. Su Jin'er turned to look at her and suddenly noticed Linyuan's face slowly transforming into someone else—someone she had never seen before. She widened her eyes in terror, incredulously watching Linyuan's face change into another person's.
That person opened their eyes and looked at her with a strange smile.
"Who are you?"
"I am Linyuan! You can't possibly not recognize your best friend!" The person continued to smile eerily, sending chills down Su Jin'er's spine.
"No, you are not Linyuan. Who are you really?" She felt herself on the brink of breaking down; why had she been encountering so many strange things lately?
"Ha ha!" The person laughed, their voice cracked and hoarse, making it impossible to tell if they were male or female. "Don't you want to know who did the killing? Let me tell you! I killed them all, every single one of them."
Su Jin'er’s face turned pale. Was this a dream? Was she dreaming again?
"Who exactly are you?"
"You don't need to care who I am. I just want to tell you, don't investigate any further. You can't defeat him. If you give up now, maybe he will spare you."
A chill swept over her. Linyuan was still Linyuan, her brows slightly furrowed as if she were dreaming.
"Linyuan, wake up!" Su Jin'er gently nudged her awake.
Linyuan rubbed her eyes and looked out at the rapidly passing scenery. "I'm so tired! Where are we?"
"Do you feel unwell anywhere? Does your head hurt?"
"My head doesn't hurt, but I feel so exhausted, like I've run a marathon of several thousand meters. My whole body aches." She rubbed her shoulders, her brows deeply furrowed.
"Do you remember where we're going? What we're doing?"
Linyuan reached out to touch Su Jin'er's forehead and said helplessly, "What's wrong with you? You're not even running a fever; why are you asking such strange questions?"
Seeing that she seemed fine, Su Jin'er felt a weight lift from her heart. It was good that nothing was wrong.
She fell into deep thought again, with more questions swirling in her mind. Right now, she felt like she was wrapped in a cocoon, desperately seeking an exit to catch her breath, only to find that there wasn't even a tiny crack around her; the surrounding air felt suffocating.
"Jin'er, we're about to get off the bus. Why are you in a daze?"
"Ah! Oh!" Coming back to her senses, Su Jin'er pulled Linyuan and rushed down from the car.
The dark snow had been piled up on one side of the road by people, and there was even some garbage that had not been cleared away.
"Why did you ask such a strange question just now?"
Just as Su Jin'er was contemplating whether to tell her, a familiar figure caught her eye. She quickly grabbed Linyuan's hand and chased after it.
What she saw was none other than Officer Li, who they were looking for this time. Officer Li was hurrying ahead with a few others.
"Officer Li?" Su Jin'er shouted breathlessly.
Li Jing stopped and turned to look at them from a distance. "What brings you here?"
"We wanted to ask for your help, so we came!" Linyuan said with a smile, sticking out her tongue.
"Where are you all going in such a hurry?" Su Jin'er asked as she looked at them.
"There was an accident up ahead. Our officers just went over, and I'm going to take a look too."
"Can we go see?"
"If you're not afraid, of course you can."
When they arrived at the scene, Su Jin'er found that the accident site was almost identical to the dream she had. The private car was silver, and it had collided with a red truck. The police were handling the situation.
Su Jin'er stared blankly at the shattered glass and the completely deformed car, feeling as if an invisible hand was tightly gripping her throat, making it increasingly difficult to breathe.
"Jin'er, what's wrong? You look so pale."
"Xiaoyuan, I'm so scared!" Her body trembled slightly. "Last night's dream, my dream has become reality."
Linyuan widened her eyes at her. "You mean you can see things that will happen in the future? How is that possible? We're not filming a Chinese version of 'The Grim Reaper Is Here.'"
Linyuan's smile was somewhat stiff; too many bizarre things had happened recently, and her mind was feeling overloaded.
At the scene, Su Jin'er did not see the owners of the two cars. She heard that everyone had been sent to the hospital. The private car had one man and two women, resembling a family of three, while the truck only had a driver who was also sent to the hospital. This traffic accident was serious.
Sitting in Li Jing's office, Su Jin'er trembled as she held a cup of water. Her mind was still replaying the car accident—the shattered glass everywhere, the deformed vehicles, and the blood on the ground. She could even see the driver and his family struggling to crawl out of the window, their faces covered in blood as they reached out to her for help.
Why were these events happening so coincidentally? Each time they were present, either discovering a corpse or arriving just before an incident occurred. Perhaps all of this was not coincidence but rather a deliberate design. She should have thought of this sooner, but what exactly was the purpose of the person behind it?
At that moment, Li Jing returned from outside.
"Did you come to see me about Grandpa Liu?" she asked with a smile. Perhaps having seen too much death had numbed her heart.
"Yes, but I also hope to see the bodies of the other three people," Su Jin'er said sincerely. Although she had no experience in autopsies, she had watched enough Sherlock Holmes to know some basic things.
"Aren't you scared?"
"Saying I'm not scared would be a lie, but the only ones who can tell us the truth are the deceased." At that moment, she felt surprisingly calm. As she said, she wasn't unafraid, but fear was useless. She couldn't just watch as people around her were killed one by one.
"Alright then! Follow me; I'll tell you about Grandpa Liu's autopsy report as we walk."
Li Jing informed them that Grandpa Liu died from a sudden heart attack and that there were currently no links found between his case and the other three incidents. The only strange thing was Grandpa Liu's expression at the time of his death; it seemed as if he knew he was about to die.
"If that's the case, then it's even stranger," Su Jin'er frowned. She had thought that Grandpa Liu's death was due to poisoning, but it turned out to be a heart condition. "I remember there were no signs when he passed away, and there was no expression of pain on his face from a sudden heart attack. He just slightly tilted his head back, as if recalling something. We were all waiting to hear what he would say next, but then he died."
Su Jin'er's voice choked up a bit, and her eyes slowly became moist.
"Are you going to ask him any questions?"
"Yes, I think the recent cases might be related to what happened five years ago, so I want to know what exactly happened back then!"
Li Jing thought for a moment and said, "If something significant happened five years ago, the police station should have records of it. I'll go look for them shortly."
At this point, they had arrived at the Morgue. Looking at the black iron door, Su Jin'er felt a chill run down her spine. It was her first time entering a Morgue, and even before stepping inside, she could feel the bone-chilling cold.
"It's very cold inside; you need to be mentally prepared," Li Jing said as she took out her keys, gently unlocked the iron door, and pushed it open to enter.
Inside were ten beds lined up side by side, each one holding a cold corpse.
Li Jing turned on the light. The dim yellow glow made the already eerie room seem even more sinister. They couldn't help but shiver and instinctively rubbed their shoulders.
