Du Xiaonan went crazy.
This happened three days after that night.
That night, they brought the unconscious Du Xiaonan back to the dormitory, and she remained in a coma. On the afternoon of the third day of her coma, she suddenly woke up.
"Run away!"
This was the only coherent sentence she uttered upon waking, after which she went mad, muttering repeatedly, "Everyone will die; no one can escape."
Du Xiaonan was sent to a psychiatric hospital, leaving only Su Jin'er and Linyuan in the dormitory. They sat listlessly on their beds, staring at the empty beds of Du Xiaonan and Li Yiqian.
Su Jin'er closed her eyes in pain. So much had happened, yet they had no clues at all. The strangest part was that even after three consecutive murders, the police had not taken notice. Were they really just eating their salaries?
Just as she was feeling hopeless, there was a knock on the door. They exchanged glances and opened it with confusion.
"Hello, I'm Detective Li Jing. May I come in to ask you some questions?" A woman in a white trench coat smiled as she stood at the door.
Su Jin'er stepped aside with a smile and said, "Please come in!"
Li Jing entered their dormitory, looked around at the decor, and smiled, "Girls' dormitories are always so clean and tidy!"
Su Jin'er chuckled and handed her a cup of water. "Make yourself comfortable! I wonder what Officer Li wants to ask us?"
Li Jing sat down on Su Jin'er's bed. She had neat short hair but a doll-like face; if she hadn't introduced herself as a police officer, no one would associate her with law enforcement.
"You don't need to be nervous; I'm not like those idiots at the station. So can you tell me everything you know?" Seeing their skeptical expressions, Li Jing took out her police badge.
"What do you want to know?"
"Exactly! We've already told you everything we can."
"You don't need to be nervous. I'm here solely to investigate the Killer, and more importantly, I want to be friends with you," Li Jing said with a gentle smile.
Su Jin'er thought for a moment and said, "To be honest, we don't know why she went crazy. Do you know about the case of Li Yiqian's disappearance?"
Li Jing nodded. "Are you saying that she went crazy after going out with Li Yiqian?"
"Yes! But it wasn't that serious at the time; at least she wasn't running around, hitting people, or biting anyone!"
Li Jing nodded again. "Did anything particularly strange happen after she returned?"
Su Jin'er remained silent. Seeing their silence, Li Jing knew there must be something they couldn't talk about and said, "Don't worry. No matter how unbelievable your story is, I will believe you."
"The things that happened are so unbelievable that I can't even explain them to you."
Even though she said that, she still told Li Jing everything terrifying that had happened to her.
After listening, Li Jing fell silent. As a police officer, she shouldn't believe in so-called Demons, but for some reason, she believed every word these two girls were saying.
"I know you might not believe what we're saying; I don't even believe it myself," she said with a bitter smile. She had never believed in supernatural events, yet now she was trying to convince a police officer of their existence.
"No, I believe everything you say. So please trust me as well. To show my sincerity, if there's any clue you want to know from the police side, I can tell you."
Su Jin'er looked at her in surprise; she had been anxious about how to find out the police's clues!
"I want to know the cause of Zhang Junsheng's death," she said seriously.
"Zhang Junsheng was hanged, wasn't he?" Linyuan asked curiously; they had clearly seen Zhang Junsheng hanging from a tree that day.
"No, Zhang Junsheng was strangled to death, right, Officer Li?"
"Yes, he was indeed strangled, but how did you know that?"
"I saw it when you all carried his body away that day. However, what's strange is that the fingerprints left by the strangler are very unusual!"
"Tell me your thoughts."
"The fingerprints seem particularly thin; they don't look like human fingers at all. Even a girl's fingers shouldn't be that thin, and they're also quite long."
"You have really sharp eyes! What you said is almost the same as what the forensic expert said. A normal person's fingers shouldn't look like that."
"So what is your conclusion?"
Li Jing shook her head. She and Officer Zhou had visited the scene more than once and found no usable clues. Logically speaking, there should be some evidence left behind during a murder, no matter how careful one is, but there was nothing there. Not only was there no evidence at Zhang Junsheng's death scene, but even Li Ran's death had no clues.
"Could it really be a ghost seeking revenge? Is it Xiaoqing's ghost?" Linyuan's face turned pale with fear.
"By the way, Officer Li, is there any record of a girl named Xiaoqing who died five years ago?"
"I wasn't a police officer five years ago! But I can check with the station. Does this have anything to do with the case we're currently handling?"
Su Jin'er shook her head; they didn't know if there was any connection. That's why they omitted any mention of Li Yiqing when discussing earlier.
"Alright! Let's leave it at that for now. If anything comes up, feel free to contact me anytime; here's my number." Li Jing wrote her mobile number in her notebook and handed it to Su Jin'er.
After seeing Li Jing off, Su Jin'er sat on the bed in disappointment, pressing her hand against her forehead and frowning tightly. Three people were already dead; she wondered if anyone else would be killed. Du Xiaonan had gone mad, and Li Yiqian was missing. Could things get any worse?
"Xiaoyuan, let's go find the counselor."
"What do we need to see the counselor for?"
"I don't know, go ask! Maybe there are things we want to know."
Their counselor, Zhang Jing, was a graduate student, a handsome young male teacher who had been at the school for less than a year. Although he probably wouldn't know what happened five years ago, a counselor should know more than the students, right? Besides, even if he inquired about past events at the school, no one would suspect anything.
Knock knock—
Zhang Jing, who was seriously reading a book, heard someone knocking on the door and stood up to open it.
"Su Jin'er? Do you need something?"
"Counselor, can I ask you some questions?"
"Of course! I'll tell you anything I know. What do you want to ask?" This Zhang Jing was known for his good temper; no matter which student came to him, he would enthusiastically help them. It was said that many girls at the school had crushes on him!
"Actually, it's not a big deal. We just want to know who has been at our school the longest. It can be anyone."
"Oh! You asked at just the right time. If you had asked me before yesterday, I might not have been able to help you. But why do you want to know this?"
"Nothing much, just trying to understand the history of our school." Su Jin'er felt nervous inside, hoping he wouldn't suggest going to the archives for old school history.
"Oh! I see!" Zhang Jing thought for a moment and continued without pressing further: "If we're talking about the longest-serving person, that would be the principal. As for the teachers, it seems like the most anyone has been here is four years!"
"Why? Isn't there anyone who's been here for over five years or exactly five years?"
"I'm curious too! But I heard that something unknown happened five years ago, and all the teachers were replaced. However, it seems that two people were kept on."
"Who?"
"The gatekeeper Old Man Liu and Teacher Zhang."
"Which Teacher Zhang? Aren't you also surnamed Zhang?"
Zhang Jing was taken aback for a moment and then smiled, saying, "I almost forgot, it's Teacher Zhang who teaches you Dissection!"
Just as Su Jin'er and Linyuan were about to say goodbye, he suddenly seemed to remember something and asked, "Why are you two asking these questions? Are you investigating something?"
"How could that be? Teacher, we were just asking casually. It's nothing, so we'll be on our way now."
They didn't wait for him to say anything else and hurried out of Zhang Jing's office.
It turned out that the old man in the security room was surnamed Liu, and he had been at the school for a long time. It would be much easier to ask Old Man Liu than Teacher Zhang! Just thinking about that gloomy teacher sent shivers down their spines.
"Let's go find Old Man Liu and ask him what happened five years ago that led to all the teachers being replaced."
They quickly walked toward the door, only to find that Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi were already there.
"What are you doing here?" Linyuan asked in confusion.
"Oh, nothing! Just came to chat with the old man," Zuo Yi said, scratching his head, clearly not good at lying.
"Well, since we have nothing to do either, let's chat together!" Su Jin'er said with a smile as she sat down in a chair by the table.
Old Man Liu chuckled as he stroked his completely white beard, "You kids are all smart. If you need anything, just ask this old man!"
Su Jin'er thought for a moment and said, "Grandpa Liu, I know you've been at this school the longest, so I hope you can tell us everything you know. You must be aware of what has happened during this time, so please tell us what exactly happened five years ago."
Upon hearing her mention five years ago, Old Man Liu's face twitched involuntarily. He closed his eyes for a moment and then slowly opened them again, his gaze filled with pain and fear.
"Five years ago... that was truly a tragedy! Such a good child died just like that. I really don't understand how someone could have the heart to kill such an outstanding child. It's a crime!"
"Who killed whom?"
Hearing that Grandpa was no longer speaking, Linyuan anxiously asked.
"Don't interrupt, let Grandpa speak."
However, after waiting for a long time, Grandpa Liu still did not continue. His head was slightly tilted back, as if he were pondering something. A sudden sense of foreboding washed over Su Jin'er as she slowly walked to Old Man Liu's side and reached out to check his breath.
Her body began to tremble uncontrollably, and tears slowly streamed down her cheeks: "Grandpa Liu has passed away."
"What?"
A few people disbelievingly stepped forward. How could this be? He had just been talking to them moments ago! How could he suddenly be gone?
Su Jin'er collapsed onto the ground: "It's all my fault. If it weren't for me wanting to investigate these matters, Grandpa Liu wouldn't have died. Oh my God! What have I done?"
"No, it's not your fault. No matter what, we must find the Killer and avenge Grandpa Liu," Chu Feifan said as he pulled Su Jin'er up from the ground and held her tightly.
