Spirit Stone chose to protect the observer, and most of the elders followed him down. However, a few did not move. They had relatives in the Farmstead, and seeing the area below engulfed in the Fire Sea, how could they just stand by and watch their loved ones burn to death?
Exchanging glances, they quietly broke away from the group, swiftly heading down towards the Farmstead.
Spirit Stone was aware but did not stop them.
The group quickly reached the Farmstead. The crops in the surrounding fields had turned to charred remains, glowing embers scattered everywhere. Thick smoke billowed from within the high walls, and flames roared skyward, driven by the strong winds. An ominous stench filled the air—the smell of burnt flesh.
Their hearts raced as they called out their relatives' names and rushed into the Fire Sea behind the high walls.
The sight before them was unbearable; everywhere lay corpses of adults and children, most curled up in the streets, burned and shriveled. They stumbled through the piles of bodies, turning them over one by one. All were dead; there were no survivors. Many still had Purple Blood around their mouths and noses, clearly indicating they had been poisoned.
With a loud crash, a nearby building finally collapsed, sending choking smoke into the air.
Suddenly, a haunting song echoed from within the Fire Sea, intermittent and ghostly like an Evil Spirit. The sound did not seem to express pain but rather an overwhelming joy. The group felt their hair stand on end and abruptly stopped in their tracks.
One elder hesitated and said, “Is someone alive?”
“Let’s go check!”
“Be careful of ambushes!”
They cautiously moved forward step by step, following the sound of the song.
The melody grew clearer; it was a woman’s voice, her gentle singing drifting through:
“Do You Know the Pain of Longing?,
In dreams and souls, there’s nowhere to seek.”
Cold Food Festival Every Morning Nightly Rain,
Dawn Breeze cannot be seen through the Vermilion Door.
Do You Know the Pain of Longing?,
This life is filled with Past Life Mistake.
White-Headed Lament refers to the Parting Person,
Wishing for One Heart Without Jealousy.”
(“Do You Know the Pain of Longing?”)
As the last line “No Jealousy” was sung, the voice lowered, finally becoming inaudible.
Several elders were puzzled; the meaning of the lyrics did not resemble that of a Demon Sect Monster. Unable to endure any longer, they hurriedly rushed toward the source of the singing.
It was a small courtyard, almost at the end of a long street. A great fire blazed in the house, beams and rafters crackling as they burned. The door was wide open, and in the center of the hall, amidst the Fire Sea, sat a person, her entire body ablaze like a torch.
It was a woman! Her Crimson Hair flowed behind her, her body matching the red hue of the Fire Sea. In the midst of the roaring flames, she sat motionless, holding a crystal-clear jade bottle in her palms. The jade bottle was Spiritual Energy Flowing, emitting a faint Azure Light, illuminating her face.
In an instant, they witnessed one of the most heart-stirring scenes of their lives; this woman actually smiled. The beautiful and pure Face bore a tragic smile that resembled a final flower blooming in an instant, yet at the same time, two streams of deep red tears flowed from her bright eyes.
“Tell Li Hong, I’m leaving.”
With a thunderous roar, the house collapsed, burying the woman beneath the Fire Sea.
The elders remained in shock for a long time afterward. They cried out and turned to search for their loved ones, but they never saw even half a living person again.
Li Hong had just passed another trial of the Heart Demon and felt somewhat fatigued. His Awareness had not been depleted at all; rather, it was his mental state that felt drained, giving him a sense of exhaustion.
A subtle feeling surged in his heart; the Tenth Level was approaching.
Yet, there was no immediate movement.
Unable to resist, he opened his eyes. Before him lay the dimly lit Underground Cave, filled with the colorful glow of crystals that sparkled like stars in a clear night sky, casting a beautiful iridescence in the darkness.
Suddenly, a gentle breeze appeared, lightly brushing against his face, while his long hair danced behind him. It seemed there was some activity outside the Passageway.
A chill ran through him. Could this trial be similar to the Lustful Temptation, where reality intertwined with illusion? He focused intently.
The breeze continued to flow from the Passageway into the cave, sweeping over his body before finally settling beside him.
A whirlwind softly circled around him, its ends brushing against his back as if a hand were gently caressing him.
After a long while with no other movements, only this lingering whirlwind continued to swirl around him tenderly.
Li Hong kept his eyes tightly shut, wanting to open them and see what was happening but hesitating.
The whirlwind leisurely circled him, its ends gliding over every inch of his skin. It felt ticklish yet extremely comfortable. Li Hong's tense body and mind gradually relaxed, and he finally opened his eyes.
The Underground Cave remained dimly lit, but the whirlwind slowly retreated, stopping three feet in front of him. A shadow began to take shape from within the whirlwind.
Li Hong focused intently and was startled.
Wanyi! It was Wanyi again!
She appeared as a hazy figure, like an ethereal shadow, yet her face and figure were unmistakable; it was Wanyi! Her long hair flowed down, unbound, gently swaying beside her fair face like a phantom. The entire figure emitted a faint white light from within, illuminating the dim cave, exuding unparalleled beauty and purity.
She floated a foot above the ground, gazing intently at Li Hong, her sparkling eyes filled with deep reluctance and affection.
She moved her beautiful red lips as if to say something, but no words were audible.
She fell silent, her bright eyes brimming with deep emotion, seemingly trying to engrave Li Hong's image firmly in her heart, never to be forgotten for thousands of years.
Li Hong felt as if struck by lightning and involuntarily exclaimed, "How did you come here?"
Wanyi did not respond; her face, filled with deep emotion, gradually became transparent as if melting from within. She cast one last glance at Li Hong, a bittersweet yet content smile blooming on her beautiful face.
Suddenly, her figure dissipated into countless tiny white light points that drifted into the void.
There was no further movement.
Li Hong was bewildered. What was happening? Could this be another trial of the Heart Demon? But why was this trial of the Heart Demon represented by Wanyi, and why was she merely an ethereal shadow?
A storm of emotions surged within him—unease, trembling, joy, anxiety, doubt, worry... A multitude of complex feelings surged forth. A sweetness rose in his throat; he coughed up a mouthful of blood that splattered onto the black stone ground before him.
His mind felt foggy, teetering between consciousness and unconsciousness as he slowly stood up against his will. There was only one thought in his heart: he had to go down to the farmstead to see Wanyi.
At that moment, the golden Mind Sea in his Upper Dantian Purple Palace suddenly began to swirl. Nine already formed golden pills emitted bright golden light that shot towards the last dim-colored Fake Dan. This Fake Dan began to glow gradually under the immense force of the nine pills, its color transforming from pale gold to a rich golden hue.
In a critical moment, the nine golden pills autonomously activated and pulled the last Fake Dan Golden Core.
A glimmer of clarity swept through his muddled mind. Li Hong halted at the entrance of the passageway and suddenly understood that this final trial was an emotional tribulation! The complex emotions he felt were indeed expressions of love—bittersweet and joyful, both happy and sorrowful.
Realizing this, he reassured himself: Wanyi, rest assured; I will not fail you.
Li Hong firmly walked back to his original spot and sat down again.
Awareness immediately began to swirl around. This time, there was no hesitation or fear; only one thought remained in his mind: Golden Core! After achieving the Golden Core, he would descend the mountain to see Wanyi. At that time, in this vast world, there would surely be a place for both of them.
A beam of golden light gradually erupted from Li Hong's forehead, casting a golden shadow on the surface of the Black Stone ground. The last Fake Dan in the Upper Dantian grew increasingly golden until it finally transformed into a true Golden Dan, joining the other nine companions.
The Golden Dan was successfully formed! But Li Hong soon realized that this was just the beginning.
The Mind Sea began to spin rapidly, autonomously pouring all the accumulated golden liquid Awareness from his cultivation into the Golden Dan. The Upper Dantian was immediately empty, and the rotation speed of the ten Golden Dans slowed down, their colors starting to fade once again.
Without hesitation, Li Hong took out a large piece of Supreme Celestial Stone from his Cosmic Bag and placed it in front of him. A long stream of Iridescence flowed from the Supreme Celestial Stone directly toward his forehead, traveling from the Upper Dantian through the Great Circulation and instantly being absorbed by the ten Golden Dans.
What was needed now was energy; only a massive amount of energy could nourish the Golden Dans and solidify his cultivation.
In the realm of cultivation, time ceased to exist. Li Hong entered a long state of meditation devoid of joy or sorrow.
