Meng Wu and Wang Jian's troops had not crossed the river on schedule because their General was transported across by a small boat. The Soldiers received orders to remain in place and wait for subsequent instructions.
Neither of them knew what the next mission would entail, but it was likely to be a challenging task. Since their subordinates were left on the East Bank, this operation was expected to be a combat mission. As the small boat approached the dock, the two hurriedly jumped onto the riverbank. Just as they were about to inquire why no horses had been prepared, Wuan Jun Bai Qi emerged from the crowd.
Based on the orders received the previous day, Meng Wu and Wang Jian realized that the Qin Army had replaced its General. Seeing Wuan Jun now made everything clear. They had been unaware of who had replaced Old General Wang He, but it turned out to be General Bai Qi!
"I am Meng Wu! I am Wang Jian! We pay our respects to Wuan Jun!"
Bai Qi quickly supported their bodies as they attempted to bow. "This is wartime; all formalities should be kept simple! Since we are brothers, there is no need for such trivial matters."
While this might be acceptable in other contexts, given his position, it would seem inappropriate for subordinates to casually respond. Meng Wu and Wang Jian exchanged glances, remaining silent but following his lead and refraining from bowing again.
"Both Generals, please follow me!" Bai Qi said, turning and leading them toward a Central Army tent set up near the riverbank.
The three entered the Main Tent in single file. Bai Qi walked to the table and gestured for Meng Wu and Wang Jian to come closer. "I assume both Generals have spent quite some time in the Shangdang Region?" After receiving an affirmative response, he pointed at the Military Map spread out on the table and said, "You are both valiant generals of Great Qin; seeing the markings on this map should make things clear. If there are no issues, I will not waste time and will get straight to the point."
The map displayed was a standard Military Map, with the current situation clearly marked above. Having studied at military academies, Meng Wu and Wang Jian could easily understand it.
At that moment, over a hundred thousand troops were attempting to cross the Dan Shui River. Logically, the Qin Army should have received retreat orders. However, the markings on the map indicated otherwise; several Qin Army positions were cut off behind an aggressive Zhao Army.
This situation could only manifest in two ways: either the Messenger dispatched from the Qin Army Camp had failed to relay information in time, resulting in them not receiving retreat orders; or these units of the Qin Army had been completely cut off by the Zhao Army and could not return!
Meng Wu's heart began to grasp what was happening as he turned to look at Wang Jian. The two nodded at each other and simultaneously expressed their readiness for Grand Commander to issue orders.
Bai Qi did not expect these two to be so straightforward, nodding secretly. This mission could very well be one with no return. "Given the current situation, I believe both generals are already aware. So I hope you understand that this is about completing the mission at all costs, not about sending you to your deaths!"
In reality, there was no difference; as long as the mission involved the Zhao Army coming in full force, it made no distinction! Meng Wu did not care about this and simply chuckled a couple of times, indicating that he received a letter from home yesterday, announcing that his wife had given birth to a healthy baby boy. The Meng Family now had an heir!
This was indeed a momentous occasion! Bai Qi and Wang Jian congratulated General Meng and agreed that Meng Wu would host a celebration. The full moon banquet might not be feasible, so they would settle for a hundred-day celebration instead!
When Meng Wu was leading troops into battle, Wuan Jun and Wang Jian were still studying in school. Analyzing the current situation, he did not believe that the generals would return in time for the hundred-day celebration of the Meng Family's child. However, this was not something he could voice, so he expressed his determination to make it happen during the festive occasion. No one could be absent!
Wang Jian agreed wholeheartedly, saying it was no problem at all. Just then, he noticed Meng Wu was staring at him.
Bai Qi also noticed Meng Wu's expression and quickly understood what this fluctuating General Meng wanted to convey. No wonder Meng Wu had suddenly mentioned having a son; he was trying to remind him that Wang Jian did not have a family yet and thus would not have children.
Meng Wu read the room and realized Wuan Jun had already caught on. He knelt down and said, "There are still our brothers in the rear of the Zhao Army who have not retreated; I am willing to lead my troops to notify them! Please grant me permission, Grand Commander!"
It was indeed as he thought! Bai Qi gritted his teeth, about to nod in agreement when he saw Wang Jian kneel down immediately afterward.
Wang Jian was not a fool; upon hearing Meng Wu voluntarily take on the entire mission, he understood General Meng's intentions. As a Qin General, why should he have so many concerns? The sacrifices made now were for the sake of allowing more children to live without war and slaughter in the future!
"Commander! I cannot forget the greater good for my own sake! I hope General Meng can appoint me as an assistant solely to rescue our trapped brothers!"
Meng Wu knew well that this mission was fraught with danger but also understood that it could not be avoided. Since this task must be executed, he thought it best to leave hope for survival with Wang Jian! Unexpectedly, Wang Jian did not even consider this and proactively requested to accompany the troops. How could this be allowed!?
As long as the Commander had not issued an order, there was still a chance to turn things around. Determined not to let Wang Jian take risks, Meng Wu quietly reminded him, "General Wang! We, the Great Qin and good men, know that we must sacrifice ourselves for the greater good of the country. As generals, we must set an example! Rest assured, Commander! Bai Qi did not express any further opinions and rolled up the military map on the table to hand it to Wang Jian. "I entrust this matter to both generals; you must return alive! I not only want to drink with Xiao Meng'er but also want to celebrate General Wang Jian's wedding!"
This operation was already urgent, so Meng Wu and Wang Jian dared not delay any longer. They both agreed and prepared to leave the main tent to cross the river and reunite with their subordinates who had been waiting for a long time at the East Bank of the Dan Shui River.
Bai Qi watched as the two resolutely departed and shouted, "General Meng! Has your child been named?"
They had just received news yesterday and hurriedly rushed to the Dan Shui River Boundary with the main force. In all the busyness, they hadn't had a moment to think about this matter. Meng Wu stopped in his tracks and indicated that he had not yet had time.
Wuan Jun and Bai Qi nodded upon hearing this answer. He was not only known for his military achievements in the Qin State but also for his talents. "If our Qin Army can win this battle, it will be due to the bravery and determination of all the soldiers. As your commander, I will take on the task of naming General Meng's child by taking the character 'determin' from 'determination.' How does that sound?"
