With a loud bang, the helmet of the rider in the City Patrol Guard team fell to the ground. "What’s going on!? Did anyone see anything?" came a voice from the Alley, and the previously orderly formation quickly scattered as they sought cover.
Luzi curiously glanced at the Locust Stone in his hand when he suddenly heard a whistling sound coming from ahead. Judging by its speed, the incoming object could easily pierce through the loosely packed snow in front of him.
There was no time to catch it now; the hidden weapon was already upon him. Luzi slapped the rooftop with his right hand, sprang up, and lunged toward the shadow hiding ahead. If they were going to stay together, escaping wouldn’t be so easy!
“Above! There’s someone! Grab them!”
When the City Patrol Guard noticed the sudden appearance of a figure in black on the rooftop, Luzi had already reached the opposite roof. He saw a shadow leap up and attempt to escape, quickly grabbing that person’s ankle and pulling them back. Then, he placed his right hand on the shoulder of the fleeing figure and gently pushed, intending to send them off the edge.
The figure in black slightly lowered their shoulder to absorb the force and turned around, striking at Luzi’s waist in an attempt to push him off the roof. Lu Zichao stepped forward, allowing the force to glide past him while seizing the black-clad person's left arm and yanking them away from the rooftop before gently pushing with both hands.
The exchange between the two was swift, with victory determined in an instant. The one who had completely lost balance and footing flew sideways toward the Alley. At that critical moment, his companion also sensed that something was wrong.
As a rope was thrown over, the falling figure reached out to grab it and pulled himself back onto the rooftop. He then hurled three Locust Stones at Luzi. Drawing his Bronze Sword, Luzi swung it to deflect the projectiles and stepped forward to stab at the still-airborne shadow.
If earlier it was merely an attempt to capture, with circumstances growing increasingly urgent, Luzi could no longer afford to hesitate. If he could make this black-clad person fall, they would be captured by the City Patrol Guard. At that point, with an offender in hand, the City Patrol Guard would have no choice but to act.
The Officer of the City Patrol Guard donned his helmet and raised his hand to stop the soldiers from shooting arrows. He had already discerned that these sudden arrivals were not part of a single group; if that were so, they might as well wait for someone to fall. Thus, he commanded, “Let them fight first! Younger Ones! Prepare to net them!”
The shout naturally reached those on the rooftop, assuring them that they need not worry about the government troops in the Alley. The three figures in black realized their comrade was unable to subdue their opponent and quickly armed themselves for assistance.
Just as Lu Zigang leaped out, he gestured for Xiao Yu'er not to move. Regardless of how things turned out, even if they had to flee afterward, it would draw away the government troops from within the Alley. And Xiao Yu'er knew where their target destination was; they would continue toward Zichu’s home once it was safe around them.
However, due to the urgency of the situation, Luzi had no time to inform Xiao Yu'er of his plan. Xiao Yu'er was not Sun Thirteen or Li Xin; seeing Luzi in danger made her heart race. She half-kneeled up from the snow pit, drew her bow, and shot three arrows at the shadow.
The five people on the roof were having a great time when they simultaneously noticed the Sentry arrows flying toward them. They hurriedly dodged, almost stepping on the snow accumulated on the roof's slope. Regardless of whether the snow covered tiles or thatch, it had formed an incredibly slippery slide due to its thickness.
Luzi reached out and caught one of the arrows shooting toward him. A glance at the arrowhead revealed who was responsible for this mischief. Before he could get angry, he saw the person across from him narrowly dodge the flying arrow and curse, "Damn it! Why are so many people out visiting when it's not even New Year? What a hassle!"
Letting them escape would be troublesome!
Lu Zigang intended to use a grappling technique but suddenly felt something behind him. He quickly turned around and caught another arrow aimed at his chest. He tilted his head to avoid another arrow coming from the front, only to hear a cry of surprise from behind.
Had they gone mad? How could they shoot arrows without distinguishing friend from foe!?
By the time Luzi thought about making a move, it was already too late. Three men in black had helped their comrade, who had been hit in the shoulder, leap onto the opposite rooftop. The Soldiers watching from the Alley had initially planned to wait for an opportunity but suddenly found themselves shooting arrows at the fleeing shadows. They shouted and rushed after them; after all, it was easier to catch someone who was injured than one who wasn't. Plus, none of them had learned any light-footed techniques as children, so they couldn't easily climb onto roofs.
Even if they chased after them now, it would take time to catch up. Luzi held two arrows and was about to turn around when he noticed two shadows behind Xiao Yu'er. "Watch out!"
Xiao Yu'er was focused on Luzi and was thrilled that they were winning this fight. Upon hearing the warning, she wondered why she wasn't allowed to speak.
Seeing that she didn't turn back, Luzi nearly lost his temper. He abruptly threw one of his arrows toward Xiao Yu'er and quickly followed after her.
When Xiao Yu'er realized something was off with Luzi's actions, two arrows were already flying toward her. In a rush, she stepped aside and twisted her waist to dodge, only to see an arrow shooting from behind her fly past in front of her.
The roof hadn't been cleared of snow all winter and was incredibly slippery. The reason those above didn't fall was due to their precise control over where they placed their feet. Even a slight miscalculation could throw off their balance completely.
Xiao Yu'er, in a hurry to dodge, suddenly lost her footing. She felt her foot slip, and it was too late to regain her balance. Just as danger appeared, Luzi arrived in time. He reached out and caught Xiao Yu'er by her soft waist, turning to redirect the downward force.
It was the first time in her life that Xiao Yu'er was held by a man, and she felt her cheeks flush with embarrassment while also experiencing a wave of dizziness. As loud cheers erupted from the alley, her awareness began to return. Just as she was about to break free, she heard Luzi tell her not to move.
The situation was extremely unclear, and Luzi had no time to admire beauty under the moonlight. He instructed Xiao Yu'er to stay still because the rooftop was not a safe place to stand casually. Lowering his head to find a good angle, he steadied Xiao Yu'er before bowing in gratitude to the half squad of City Patrol Guards left in the alley.
The officer of the City Patrol Guard did not respond but returned the bow towards the two on the rooftop. He tossed back an identity badge and then led his soldiers in pursuit of the four black-clad figures who had fled.
"If I had known they were our people, we might as well have walked on the ground just now."
Hearing Xiao Yu'er's delicate voice in the cold night made Luzi smile; it was surprisingly pleasant to hear. He glanced at the direction where they had surrendered and shook his head with a smile. He handed over the identity badge he had just caught and said softly, "If they weren't our people, you would know just by looking at this."
Xiao Yu'er nodded in agreement while securing her longbow. She reached out to take the badge but couldn't make sense of what it was after examining it for a long time.
Luzi took it back and explained, "It's nothing much! This is a token from General Zhao Kuo's residence, inherited from his father. Everyone involved in military or government service recognizes this badge. Out of respect for Zhao She, they still gave us some face."
