Having completely controlled the situation, Lu Zichao looked at a few captives who were glancing around nervously and said with a smile, "The terms are not for you to propose, as they are only allowed to be set by the victor! I am now giving you a choice, to decide whether you live or die. Just tell me your signal, and I will spare your lives! What do you say?"
Were we really that scared!?
Several Zhao Soldiers exchanged glances, glaring at the Qin Soldier scouts blocking the doorway. A Zhao Officer snorted coldly, "This is simply a daydream! Stop the nonsense and get on with it! If you hesitate even slightly, then you are no hero!"
No matter what the answer was, at least having a result would make things easier.
Luzi smiled slightly and stood up, pressing down Li Xin's bow. "Whether you tell me your signal or not doesn't really matter! Without your guidance, the Catapults of Shanxia will still be blind! Since our army's attack has already begun, just wait and see the outcome!" With that, he turned and walked toward the door.
The unarmed Zhao Army Soldiers were not truly without weapons; they were just within arm's reach nearby. Earlier, they had been too intimidated by the Qin Soldiers' watchfulness to make any moves. Now, hearing the booming drums from outside, they realized that what this scout leader said was not false.
The Qin Army's reputation for bloodshed had long spread across the Vast River South and North. Their practice of exchanging enemy heads for merit was well-known throughout the land. Rather than waiting for them to come and let Shanxia's brothers suffer alongside them, it would be better to take a chance and fight for their lives. If they acted quickly, perhaps there was still a chance to turn things around!
Killing one would break even; killing two would be a profit! They absolutely could not let the Qin State Army cross the river!
The captured Zhao Soldiers understood each other's desperate intentions through their exchanged glances. Seeing their opponents being careless, they knew this was an opportunity not to be missed. They all reached for their weapons, preparing to engage in close combat with the enemy.
As the sound of bowstrings being drawn echoed nearby, Luzi stopped in his tracks and sighed softly. Without turning back to check the outcome, he said irritably, "If you kill this man, how will you learn the Zhao Army's signal?!"
Clearly, he had deliberately given them a chance to fight back but was now trying to wash his hands of it! Li Xin put away his bow and said with a smile, "How could I let General take action in such matters? I am merely doing my part." With that, he drew his longsword and stepped forward. He placed the sharp blade against the shoulder of a Wounded Soldier so that the man could feel the cold steel against his neck.
Luzi observed that the arrow-struck man had not even had time to make a sound before dying and realized that Li Xin's skills had improved significantly. He stepped closer to the restrained Soldiers and noticed the Five-Colored Flag stuck in their midst; he recognized this one as the Standard Bearer. "We have the best Surgeon accompanying us! Your injury is no problem; it can still be treated. I can guarantee you this! What do you say?"
The injured Soldiers clearly did not want to accept any terms for survival, grinning carelessly. Looking at the brothers who had already died from arrows, one suddenly grabbed the sharp sword resting on his shoulder and dragged it across his neck.
With this precious item, if he died now, wouldn’t it be a joke? Li Xin twisted his wrist to turn the blade and withdrew it with a swift motion. As blood splattered, several fingers that were gripping the blade in an attempt to commit suicide were severed.
The connection between the fingers and the heart!
As beads of sweat the size of soybeans dripped from Zhao Soldier's forehead, his breathing became rapid. Pressing his injured hand against his abdomen to stop the bleeding, he gritted his teeth and did not scream as his body twisted in pain. "If you have the guts... just kill me! Want to know the flag signals? Dream on! If you’re a man... then give me... give me a quick death!"
The Qin Army's Action Team wanted to obtain the Zhao Army's command signals to inform Shanxia's Catapult unit that the Observation Post was still secure. The booming sound of War Drums had already begun on the other side, and the silence on the mountain was clearly suspicious. If they sent Troops up to check, any skirmish would immediately attract a large force to encircle them.
If only a few dozen Zhao Army soldiers came up, it wouldn’t be much of a problem; they could handle them quickly. But if hundreds or thousands of Zhao Soldiers came up, they could also deal with it swiftly. Right now, every moment counted; even a little extra time could allow them to hold out until reinforcements arrived. The longer they delayed, the more secure their position would be!
Luzi heard faint War Drum sounds again and felt anxious. Seeing Li Xin holding his sword without making any further moves, he casually drew his own Sword and severed one of the captive's arms. "I already said that only the victor has the right to propose terms! Want to die? It won’t be that easy!"
With both arms suddenly severed, the bloodied captive fell silent. Li Xin hurried over to check why, only to find that he had fainted from pain! If Li Xin were to directly kill someone, he had never hesitated before. Moreover, every strike was lethal without question. But now, having to chop at a living person like this made it hard for him to bring himself to do it. However, this was not a place for mercy; even a slight hesitation could lead to disaster for his team!
"General! If we want to keep him alive, we must bandage his wounds now!"
Xiao Yu'er, who had been waiting Outside, heard the commotion inside and quickly stepped in. Wang Jian tried to stop her but it was too late; he could only follow her into the room. As a strong smell of blood filled his nostrils, even this seasoned general couldn’t help but frown.
Luzi hadn’t intended for Xiao Yu'er to witness such brutal slaughter, but seeing her enter forced him to abandon that thought. "We don’t have time to wait! Xiao Yu'er, think of a way to wake him up quickly! Is there any method to keep him conscious?"
There indeed was a method!
Xiao Yu'er gritted her teeth but did not respond, quickly proceeding with the bandaging and treatment. Once everything was finished, she stood up and said, "General! If you make another move, he will die! Let me handle this; you all wait outside."
As a healer, the primary goal was to ensure the patient did not die. That was all that mattered; how could they allow Sister-in-law to be subjected to torture for interrogation?
Li Xin glanced at Wang Jian, and the two reached a consensus. Although this was a life-and-death battlefield, it was best not to involve her in such matters! Just as he was about to stand up to oppose it, he saw Luzi raise a hand to stop him.
"Let's listen to her; she is the expert in this matter!"
At such times, the so-called morality often seemed pale and powerless, but there was no other choice. When faced with a decision, they could only proceed this way! Luzi looked at the still unconscious Zhao Soldier, sheathed her sword, and then pulled Wang Jian and Li Xin out of the room.
This should have been a man's affair; how could they let a weak woman cross the taboo of her life!? Li Xin was about to turn back when Luzi grabbed him. Seeing that he could not break free, he shouted, "She is a healer! She is the one who saves lives! How can you let her kill someone!?"
