The consciousness informs the brain to organize information and uses the vocal cords to produce vibrations that create sound, which then travels through the air into the listener's auditory system, where it is processed by the brain into awareness and ultimately transformed into action. Such a lengthy process of organization and analysis cannot possibly compare to the speed of an arrow's flight! Wang Jian, unable to provide timely assistance, watched helplessly as Three Cold Stars approached Luzi, feeling as if time itself had come to a standstill.
"Thud thud thud!"
Hearing the almost simultaneous sound of Bowstring from nearby, he wondered who could be so swift, only to see Li Xin leap into action. At the same time, with three crisp metallic clinks echoing, the three arrows aimed at Luzi fell to the ground.
"General Wang! The firing rate of your weapon is too slow!" Li Xin timely saved Luzi and did not forget to criticize his senior brother as he passed by Wang Jian. After venting his frustration, he leaped in front of Luzi. Looking up, he saw Xingling Jun retreating quickly, drawing his bow for a five-shot volley. "Wei Wujie! If I miss you again today, I will take my grandfather's surname from now on!"
As Wei Wujie knocked down the first arrow, he saw four more arrows coming his way. Startled, he hurriedly grabbed two of them and fell backward just in time to avoid a fatal blow. The Cold Light flashed past with a sharp Sentry; relieved to escape danger, Wei Wujie hastily tried to stand up.
Li Xin would not give him another chance to get up and escape; he reached for an arrow and fired three more shots in quick succession.
Wei Wujie was also an exceptional expert; he accurately assessed the angle formed by the three arrows but realized he could not evade them at all. This sensation was quite strange; it felt as if there were not three arrows but rather a triangular tower. The immense pressure created made it nearly impossible to breathe, causing those beneath the tower to feel their movements were extremely slow, as if they were frozen in place. This overwhelming sense of constraint left Wei Wujie with no choice but to watch helplessly without any opportunity to dodge.
Xingling Jun's Retainers were all paying attention to this situation and suddenly noticed their master seemed entranced, propping himself up with one hand and remaining still. They immediately recognized that something was wrong! Without regard for the incoming Arrow Rain, they shouted loudly and rushed forward to implement a rescue.
As a spark of inspiration flickered in his mind, Wei Wujie's stunned consciousness suddenly cleared. He quickly adjusted his posture just enough to avoid critical hits, gritting his teeth in frustration at why there were so many capable individuals around Luzi! Remembering the familiar sense of pressure from earlier, he suddenly recalled how similar it was to the danger he had experienced on a moonless night years ago.
At this moment, Wei Wujie's position was already close to his team, providing an optimal opportunity for his Retainers to rush over for rescue. They jumped forward one after another, using their bodies to shield their master from arrows. Several muffled groans followed as their physical barriers rendered all of Li Xin's arrows ineffective. These Retainers clearly risked everything; while forming a wall of flesh, they hurriedly pulled their master back towards their team.
Li Xin's next three arrows were completely blocked by the human wall outside; when he tried to locate Wei Wujie's whereabouts again, he found that he had long since vanished. As those struck by arrows fell to the ground, the Retainers began alternating their shots to cover their retreat.
Wei Wujie, hiding behind the crowd, still felt breathless at this moment, anxiously looking around to see if he had been hit by an arrow. After repeatedly confirming that his body was fine, he finally shouted, "Is that you, the descendant of Li Gong?"
Li Xin, frustrated by his inability to confirm the target and feeling increasingly agitated, saw a flurry of arrows coming from the opposite side. He quickly dodged behind a tree and signaled to everyone to find cover. Hearing the question from across the way, he bluntly reminded, "Wei Wujie! Don't say I didn't warn you! If you know too much about this matter, I believe you'll be hunted down afterward!"
If anyone else had said such a seemingly casual warning, it would likely have been dismissed with a scoff. However, Wei Wujie completely accepted it; he did not think it was merely a threat. There is a limit to arrogance; being too proud can lead to serious trouble. The feeling he had just experienced was something he feared most in life. Logically, having gone through it once should have made him more experienced, yet here he was again. Those arrows were not just ordinary projectiles; they felt like cursed scythes! How could he have encountered this again?
The truth is that no one wants to walk down a bustling street while feeling anxious. Especially when dealing with long-range projectile weapons, it is nearly impossible to defend against them. While discerning sounds and objects is a basic skill for a master, it depends on who you are comparing yourself to. If faced with an expert archer, their attacks often leave no time for the target to react.
Taking advantage of the chaos in the enemy camp, Luzi's subordinates finally seized the opportunity. They rushed to shield their commander while counterattacking and retreating toward their camp. When both sides chose to cease fire, the distance between them widened again. Upon checking their respective casualties, they found that the losses from the earlier assault were significantly high. Luzi's side had lost a total of twenty-five people dead or injured, while Wei Wujie's side suffered one hundred thirteen casualties. On the surface, it seemed like a one-to-four casualty ratio; however, Luzi's side actually suffered more losses. They had just over one hundred men total, while Xingling Jun's side boasted over five hundred. Even if the wounded did not participate further in combat, there were still nearly four hundred men available for deployment on the other side.
Wei Wujie had already entertained thoughts of retreating; after all, living meant having a chance to fulfill his dreams. When he saw that there were still four hundred men available under his command, he felt considerably relieved. He could simply hide far away; as long as he stayed out of the effective range of arrows, he would be safe. Eighty meters was certainly not enough; two hundred meters would do!
Luzi was unaware that Xingling Jun had failed to completely encircle his camp due to overconfidence. Seeing the enemy begin to organize their retreat made him lose interest in pursuing them further. Looking down at the wooden box he held tightly in his arms, sadness welled up within him. It wasn't my fault that Zi Zhi died; yet Zi Zhi died because of me. This guilt weighed heavily on his heart; all he wanted was to find a place to sulk! Crying out loud might disrupt morale; better to keep a low profile. So he signaled for everyone to rescue the wounded and repair the defensive perimeter before retreating into the Main Tent and not coming out.
Thirteen and Li Xin had been following Luzi in their adventures for quite some time but had never seen their leader so distracted and lost in thought. Seeing Wang Jian directing his subordinates methodically repairing the defenses, these two naturally couldn't help much. Each unit had its own complete set of defensive protocols; as outsiders meddling would only create more chaos. With nothing else to do, they stood outside Luzi's tent anxiously fidgeting and pacing back and forth. Several times they wanted to go inside and check on their leader to ensure he wasn't thinking too deeply about things; however, every time they reached for the tent flap, they quickly pulled back their hands. Just when they were at a loss for what to do, they saw Chuchu passing by and hurriedly approached her with exaggerated urgency, saying that something terrible had happened! Their leader was so distraught that he had secretly gone into the tent to hang himself!
