Mo Ming drove straight to Starry Rhythm Advertising Company. Upon reaching the door of Murong Lian's office, he knocked lightly before opening the door and walking in. Seeing Mo Ming, Murong Lian paused her work and smiled, saying, "Did you see off Master?"
"Yes." Mo Ming walked over and sat down in the chair opposite Murong Lian. Looking at her, he said, "Lian Lian, I have good news for you. The person who kidnapped you back then has been caught by me."
At these words, Murong Lian's body trembled slightly. Her expression was complex, filled with fear and joy, but mostly anger. If it weren't for Gong Gao Yi's dirty tactics back then, her mother would probably still be alive today.
"Where is he?" Murong Lian's eyes began to mist as she thought of her mother. A sense of melancholy enveloped her beautiful face, and her voice became a bit hoarse.
Seeing her like this made Mo Ming feel a pang of sympathy. He immediately stood up and walked over to gently touch the corners of her eyes with his hands, smiling lightly as he said, "Lian Lian, let the past be the past. Don't dwell on those memories. You still have me, you still have Father-in-law, and many others who care about you."
"Mm-hmm." Murong Lian smiled through her tears, hugging Mo Ming's waist and resting her head against his abdomen. "I still have you. I know, Mo Ming, you're a jerk, but I feel safe with you."
"I don't mind being your jerk as long as you feel safe," Mo Ming said with a gentle smile while holding Murong Lian's head. "Lian Lian, promise me that once Gong Gao Yi gets what he deserves, you won't live in those painful memories anymore. I don't want to see you like that."
"Okay, I promise you I'll be alright." Murong Lian nodded slightly. Since recalling the past, she had been waking up from nightmares every few days. Fortunately, Aunt Xiang had been there to accompany her.
Suddenly, there was an untimely knock at the door.
Murong Lian straightened up, wiped away her tears with her hand, cleared her throat, and said, "Who is it? Come in."
"President Mu, I'm sorry to disturb you," Han Xue said apologetically. "Officer Ji Yue is here to see Mr. Mo..."
"She’s looking for Mr. Mo?" Murong Lian frowned and looked at Mo Ming. "What have you done this time? Is there trouble?"
"Lian Lian, I've been by your side these days; I haven't done anything at all. Even if I did something, do you think I'd leave any evidence for anyone to catch me?" Mo Ming said with a wry smile and shrugged his shoulders. "Let's go see what Captain Ji wants."
Mo Ming walked out calmly while Murong Lian followed him out of concern that something might happen to him.
Today, Ji Yue was not alone; besides Vice Captain Liu Dong, she brought along a group of police officers. When Mo Ming saw this situation, he knew they were not here for a friendly visit. However, since he hadn't done anything recently, he felt no fear and remained composed.
"Hey, I wonder what kind of wind blew you here today, Captain Ji, and brought along so many officers. Did I commit some great crime?" Mo Ming said with a light smile as he walked over.
Ji Yue looked the same as ever, her timeless beauty untouched by the years, and the natural smile at the corner of her mouth remained. She smiled slightly at Mo Ming and said, "This wind is not simple; it had to bring me here. Mo Ming, I actually don't believe you would do something like this."
"Oh? What have I done?" Mo Ming asked, puzzled, though the curve of his lips remained. After all, he had been living quite peacefully lately and hadn't done anything wrong, so he had nothing to fear.
The hot-tempered Liu Dong snorted coldly, "You don't know what you've done!?"
The corners of Mo Ming's mouth lifted significantly, filled with mockery as he looked at Liu Dong. "Now, Liu Vice Captain, you really need to work on that temper of yours. I genuinely don't know what you're talking about; you can't just dump this on me!"
"Stop playing dumb!" Liu Dong retorted angrily. "Let me ask you, do you know He Hong?"
"What He Hong? I don't know anyone by that name!" Mo Ming replied without a second thought. "I think you've got the wrong person. Captain Ji, you're known for your integrity; you'd better not wrongfully accuse me."
Upon hearing Mo Ming's words, Ji Yue's smile immediately vanished. She frowned and said, "Mo Ming, how could you not know He Hong? According to the testimony from the Heavenly Fragrance Pavilion's Boss, you had a violent altercation with He Hong, and even burned him. How could you possibly not know him!"
Initially, Ji Yue didn't believe that this incident was caused by Mo Ming. It wasn't that she thought he was incapable of murder; rather, she believed he wouldn't be foolish enough to commit such an act openly. However, upon hearing him claim not to know He Hong, she immediately felt that he was hiding something.
"He Hong? That Blonde Punk? If it's him, then I do know him." Only after hearing Ji Yue say this did Mo Ming remember that the last time the Blonde Punk introduced himself as Hong Ye. If it weren't for Ji Yue's reminder, he wouldn't have connected the dots to realize that the Blonde Punk's real name was He Hong.
"The testimonies are inconsistent; there's definitely something being concealed. Now you can't defend yourself anymore, can you, Mo Ming?" Liu Dong sneered triumphantly. It was unclear whether he was seeking justice or pursuing personal revenge; he always seemed eager to get Mo Ming locked up in detention.
"You're insane!" Mo Ming shot a glare at Liu Dong, flipping him off before turning to Ji Yue. "I can explain this; I only knew that guy as Hong Ye. As for his surname, I didn't know it, so I didn't connect him to that name right away."
Seeing the lingering doubt on Ji Yue's face, Murong Lian immediately stepped forward and said, "Captain Ji, I was there too; Mo Ming really didn't know that person's name was He Hong. He wasn't intentionally hiding anything."
"Hmph! Who doesn't know you're now Mo Ming's girlfriend? Even if something happens, you'll cover for him!" Liu Dong scoffed.
“Liu Vice Captain, until there is evidence, they are merely suspects. Please refrain from speaking as if they are criminals; it will only dishearten the citizens!” Ji Yue coldly reprimanded Liu Dong and turned to Mo Ming: “Just last night, He Hong was murdered on the street; he died from having his neck broken.”
He Hong is dead?
Upon hearing this news, Mo Ming felt a slight shock. Although he did not kill He Hong, the timing of He Hong's death was troubling. It indicated that a conspiracy was closing in on him.
“Is it true that He Hong is dead?” Murong Lian exclaimed in surprise and quickly explained to Mo Ming: “Captain Ji, I can guarantee that Mo Ming was at the Phoenix Grand Hotel all night. If you don’t believe me, you can check the CCTV footage at Feng Lai Hotel!”
“Thank you, Miss Murong, for providing such strong evidence. I will send someone to verify it shortly. However, right now, I hope Mo Ming can come to the police station to assist with our investigation,” Ji Yue said with a smile to Murong Lian, then looked at Mo Ming.
“Sure, since I didn’t do anything wrong, I’m not afraid of what you might find out. I can go with you right now,” Mo Ming replied, shaking off his doubts and extending his hands with a smile. “Do I need to wear handcuffs?”
“No need; I trust you,” Ji Yue shook his head. “You just need to come with us. If you didn’t do it, I won’t wrongfully accuse you.”
“Captain Ji, I’ll go with you too. I was at the scene and can provide strong testimony! This must be a setup against Mo Ming, and I will prove his innocence!” Murong Lian said, her face filled with concern.
Ji Yue nodded and said, “Since Miss Murong is here, let’s all go back together. Once we finish taking your statements, I assure you that no one will be wrongfully accused.”
“Then please make sure to get to the bottom of this, Captain Ji,” Mo Ming said lightly. “I don’t want to carry the label of a murderer; after all, that would be too foolish.”
Murder? He had taken countless lives of enemies, but he had never committed such an overt act of killing. It wasn’t that he was afraid; it was simply not something he would do. That would be the most idiotic approach—who would want to attract such trouble?
At that moment, Lin Yuan'er stepped forward with a frown and asked, “Brother Mo, what’s going on? Why are there so many police officers?”
“Yuan'er, that punk with yellow hair has been killed, and now the police suspect that the murderer is Mo Ming. You were there too; let’s go give a statement together. It’s fine; it wasn’t Mo Ming who did it; he’ll be okay,” Murong Lian explained to Lin Yuan'er.
“Yeah, I believe that Brother Mo is innocent,” Lin Yuan'er nodded in agreement.
Upon arriving at the police station, Mo Ming, Lin Yuan'er, and Murong Lian were assigned to three different Interrogation Rooms to give their statements. Ji Yue was uneasy about the police officers, especially Liu Dong, who had some past grievances with Mo Ming. Concerned that Liu Dong might seek revenge, Ji Yue decided to personally interrogate Mo Ming.
Ji Yue asked questions, and Mo Ming answered honestly, as the matter did not concern him. He preferred to avoid any misunderstandings with Ji Yue. After about half an hour, Ji Yue finished his inquiries.
"Captain Ji, you should know what kind of person I am. If I had a grudge, I wouldn't just kill someone and leave evidence behind. Clearly, someone is framing me for this, and I'm still pondering their motives," Mo Ming stated.
His words were not very direct, but both understood the implication: he could commit murder, but he wouldn't be foolish enough to leave evidence for capture.
"Mo Ming, I know you're not an ordinary person. To be honest, I don't believe you committed this crime. However, a lot of evidence points to you, so I have no choice but to question you," Ji Yue said with a sigh.
"Well, it's rare for Captain Ji to trust me like this. Even though I'm currently a suspect, it comforts me somewhat. I've said what I needed to say; I'm curious about what will happen next," Mo Ming replied with a nonchalant smile.
Ji Yue sighed again and said, "You don't have an alibi. Your car was captured on road surveillance near where He Hong was murdered. You also lack witnesses to prove your whereabouts. Even if we know someone is framing you, it's still difficult for me."
"So Captain Ji means that I'm going to be temporarily detained?" Mo Ming raised an eyebrow as if realizing something. "Captain Ji, I hope you personally investigate whether the scene of He Hong's death is indeed the first crime scene. I can't believe things would be arranged so perfectly!"
