The two once again entered the cave, and Wang Long took out the Gem to illuminate the surroundings as they slowly walked towards the spacious stone chamber at the back.
Suddenly, Wang Long realized that he had taken the Gem from the stone coffin, disturbed the Corpse of the ancestors of the Serpent Demon Clan, and even messed up the Ancestral Tablets. This was something that could never have been done by anyone from the Serpent Clan.
Perhaps this was precisely the key; only someone from the Serpent Clan would ensure that even during a retreat, the Ancestral Tablets were arranged neatly, the coffin lid was properly placed, and everything was tidied up.
He shared these thoughts with Jiang Xue, who immediately understood and agreed.
The two then stopped in the stone chamber where the Ancestral Tablets were located, intending to tidy everything up before checking for any changes in the innermost stone chamber.
Jiang Xue began to organize the Ancestral Tablets while Wang Long prepared to arrange the coffin and close its lid again.
However, as soon as he glanced at the coffin, he was taken aback and couldn't help but exclaim.
"What happened?" Jiang Xue was startled by his shout, causing her to tremble and drop the Ancestral Tablet of the Third Generation Serpent Clan Leader onto the ground with a thud.
"Come look..." Wang Long pointed at the inside of the coffin.
Jiang Xue stood up and looked into the coffin, and after a moment of realization, she was also stunned in shock.
The brilliance of the Dragon Script had completely vanished, and more importantly, even the Corpse of the Serpent Clan Ancestor was gone!
"This!!! How is that possible!"
"Could it be that after you took that Gem, this Corpse lost some protective treasure and simply disintegrated?" After a while, Jiang Xue managed to come up with a reasonable explanation for this bizarre scene, but even she found it hard to believe.
Wang Long hesitated for a moment before nodding. "That might be the best explanation, but I still feel something is off..." He looked around; the Corpses of later clan leaders remained intact, and all Ancestral Tablets were unharmed. There were no changes except for this ancestor's Corpse.
He sighed deeply, thinking that perhaps this was just how it was; he had been worrying too much.
He reached out to securely close the coffin lid and helped Jiang Xue arrange all the clan leaders' Ancestral Tablets. After taking one last look around, they entered the final enclosed stone chamber.
As soon as they stepped into the stone chamber, they sensed something different. Light streamed in from an unknown source; the entire stone chamber was now open.
"Here it is!" Wang Long shouted excitedly as he pulled Jiang Xue over. Indeed, in a secluded corner, there was a half-height stone door that had been opened, with dim light shining through it.
"Great! We can finally get out..." Wang Long said with a joyful smile.
Jiang Xue hesitated slightly, saying, "Could it be... that we triggered the mechanism by moving the Ancestral Tablet and opened this stone door; or is it possible that someone else has been here?"
Wang Long was startled and quickly replied, "Are you saying... about the missing Corpse?!"
He pondered for a moment and shook his head, saying, "That's too far-fetched. Although we can't completely rule out that possibility, the priority is to get out first. I wonder if Elder Mingyi has managed to break through. Regardless, we need to return to Dragon City and report what we've found here."
Jiang Xue nodded, and the two of them entered the stone door one after the other, climbing upwards following the light in the cave.
The stone cave was almost vertical, making it difficult to climb. Although both of them were highly skilled, it still took nearly an hour before they finally reached the exit.
Wang Long jumped out first and found himself standing on a cliff top, with a bottomless Valley below him. The only way down was a path leading down the mountain, and a cool breeze was blowing.
He quickly reached out to help Jiang Xue out of the cave.
"This seems to be the cliff top opposite where we entered the Serpent Clan's lair..." Jiang Xue looked around and immediately concluded.
Wang Long wasn't as sensitive to these things as Jiang Xue was. He laughed and said, "If that's the case, we probably have to take a detour to get back. Anyway, let's head down the mountain first."
Jiang Xue nodded, and they began to walk down the only mountain path available, gradually moving out of Sangyou Mountain's range.
...
Wang Long stayed in a village at the foot of the mountain for a day to inquire about Zhang Mingyi but didn't see even a shadow of him. They speculated that he hadn't stayed there and couldn't be sure if he had fallen into the hands of the Serpent Demon Clan.
Although they were somewhat worried, staying deeper within the Serpent Clan's controlled area was fraught with danger; every extra day spent there increased their risk. After discussing it, they decided to return to Dragon City first and inform the Dragon Head and elders about what they had discovered.
The two traveled day and night without rest, using Dragon Techniques for rapid movement towards Dragon City. After narrowly escaping death and getting far from the influence of the Serpent Clan, they finally slowed down as they approached the territory of Dragon City.
"Jiang Xue, it looks like there's an inn up ahead. After traveling so far, we should take a break!" Wang Long said as he looked at Jiang Xue.
Jiang Xue nodded and walked ahead first.
They settled at a window-side table. Wang Long ordered several dishes and began to eat heartily. Although they had brought some rations for their journey, those were incredibly unappetizing.
Jiang Xue wasn't very interested in food; she ate a few bites before turning her head to look outside at the scenery.
Just as Wang Long was enjoying himself, a voice suddenly came from behind them: "Excuse me, young brother, all seats are taken. May I share this table with you?"
Looking back, he saw a middle-aged man dressed in a blue robe, with a calm demeanor and piercing eyes that seemed to shoot lightning, resembling a snake flicking its tongue—strange and unsettling. Wang Long felt a chill run down his spine at just the first glance.
However, upon closer inspection, the newcomer appeared quite ordinary aside from his exceptionally fair skin, as if he had not seen sunlight for years.
Wang Long steadied himself and glanced around; indeed, the place was filled with people. He nodded and said, "It's no trouble. Meeting is fate; we are about to finish our meal, so please take a seat."
The man no longer hesitated and sat down beside Wang Long, nodding in greeting. He then asked, "From your attire, you don't seem to be locals. May I ask where you are from?"
Wang Long did not want to reveal their whereabouts and casually replied, "My sister and I are from Zhongzhou, here to visit relatives."
The Azure Robed Man glanced at Jiang Xue and then at Wang Long, smiling as he said, "Siblings? They don't seem like it; they look more like a pair of young lovers who have eloped..."
Jiang Xue's face immediately turned red, and her right hand twitched slightly—Wang Long recognized this as her prelude to action.
Wang Long found the comment somewhat amusing and did not hide his expression. He smiled wryly and said, "Truth and falsehood can be intertwined; why must we distinguish so clearly? May I ask where you are from and what brings you here?"
"Forget it. Born and raised here, imprisoned in this land for so many years without seeing the outside world... I wonder if my old acquaintances are still alive; how things have changed!" The Azure Robed Man looked to be only in his thirties but spoke with the sentiment of someone who had experienced great changes over time, which felt quite peculiar.
