If the money can be recovered, then I won't have to worry anymore.
However, I didn't expect to see Xiao Huai at the office after work. He was drinking in the office. When he saw me, he smiled and waved, "Come over."
"Why are you drinking here?" I frowned slightly. "You just got back yesterday; don't you have to work?"
"There's nothing much today," he chuckled. "Want to join me for a drink?"
"I don't drink," I shook my head. "You should drink less; I'm leaving work now."
"Xiaoyue," he suddenly called out to me, "Let me give you a ride home."
It was then that I realized he had already had too much to drink.
"You've been drinking; how can you take me home?" I walked over and supported him. "Let me call a car for you; you should go home and rest."
"Are you concerned about me?" He leaned in closer to me.
I instinctively stepped back. "I'm your sister's friend; of course, I care about you."
"Is that so?" He smiled. "I thought you couldn't wait to cut ties with me."
I didn't know what to say, so I changed the subject. "Where do you live? Let me call a car for you."
“Xiaoyue.” He looked at me and suddenly asked, “Do you know why I came back, right?”
I was taken aback for a moment, a strange feeling flashing through my mind. But he didn’t answer me directly; instead, he smiled and said, “You have no conscience.”
Those four words, without context, left me confused. Before I could ask, he walked towards the elevator.
I hurried to follow him. Fortunately, there was no one in the company at this hour; otherwise, it would be hard to explain Xiao Huai’s appearance.
I entered the elevator behind him and pressed the button for the first floor. Inside the elevator, Xiao Huai kept staring at me.
I felt uneasy under his gaze and asked, “What are you looking at?”
“Xiaoyue,” he suddenly asked me, “Are you short on money?”
“Ah?” I didn’t understand why he suddenly asked that.
He frowned and said, “I sent you messages and you didn’t reply; you didn’t answer my calls either. Are you short on money?”
“I’m not short on money,” I shook my head.
I just didn’t know how to face him.
“Then what are you calculating?” He looked at me and said, “You’ve been calculating something since just now.”
I was calculating whether the money Ma Jia gave me was enough for the down payment. But I couldn’t tell him that.
Taking a deep breath, I said, “I’m calculating whether my salary is enough for the down payment.”
"Are you thinking about buying a house?" he looked at me, "Where do you want to buy it?"
"How about Jiangbei District?" I casually mentioned a place.
Jiangbei District is a new area, with relatively affordable housing prices and a nice environment.
"Jiangbei District, huh?" Xiao Huai repeated.
I didn't expect that he would remember the place I casually mentioned.
And many years later, he still remembered it.
I helped Xiao Huai into the car and wanted to go back,
but he insisted, saying it was too dark and unsafe, and insisted on driving me home.
I couldn't argue with him, so I let him take me.
In fact, I was already an adult; what could possibly be unsafe?
After I got home, Xiao Huai still wouldn't leave.
"I'll walk you upstairs," he said, "I want to make sure you get home safely."
"But..."
"Xiaoyue," Xiao Huai suddenly interrupted me,
"Don't you want to see me?"
I pressed my lips together, unsure of what to say.
Actually, it wasn't that I didn't want to see him;
I just didn't know how to face him.
I took a deep breath: "Let's go."
Xiao Huai and I walked side by side into the community.
The neighborhood was quiet at night, the streetlights bright,
casting long shadows of us.
In a daze, I felt like I had returned to my childhood.
