Beiqing was burning hot, and I struggled to pull him onto the bed in the guest room.
His special identity prevented me from taking him to the hospital, so I had to use human methods to physically cool him down.
After taking care of everything, I sat by the bed, my eyes filled with worry.
I examined his current appearance.
The Erya Wing states: "The Dragonborn is the leader of the scale insects. Wang Fu describes its form as having nine similarities: a head like an ox, horns like a deer, eyes like a shrimp, ears like an elephant, a neck like a snake, a belly like a snake, scales like a fish, claws like a phoenix, and paws like a tiger."
The legendary novel from the Tang Dynasty, The Record of Liang Si Gong, also mentions that dragons fear wax, just as wolves fear fire and snakes fear realgar.
So… he is a dragon?
My gaze wandered over him; every characteristic that had already manifested matched exactly what was described in the books.
I have contracted with a dragon?!
As someone who had been instilled with the idea of being a descendant of dragons since childhood, I was completely bewildered at this moment.
I spent the entire night in a state of confusion, busy changing Beiqing's towels and tucking him in. Occasionally, I would touch his forehead to check if his temperature had decreased until dawn when my eyelids grew heavy and I finally fell into a deep sleep.
In my dreams, I saw a giant dark blue dragon circling in the sky, its presence majestic and its roar thunderous.
I reached out to touch it, but it was too far away.
The Azure Dragon seemed to sense my thoughts and swooped down towards me. Its massive form filled me with fear.
The instinctive human fear of giant creatures and foreign species made me involuntarily retreat and fall to the ground.
The Azure Dragon hovered a few meters above me, its large eyes a clear, bright sapphire blue, resembling two crystals that evoked affection. It seemed to harbor no ill intentions towards me, so I mustered my courage and slowly reached out, gently placing my hand on its rough cheek.
It was warm and very comfortable.
I woke from my dream, groggily opening my eyes to find Beiqing, who had been unconscious, now awake and quietly watching me from the bed, his eyes reflecting a different kind of emotion.
"Um... you're awake," I said, still a bit dazed and not fully alert.
I moved my hand instinctively to rub my half-open eyes.
Just as I made a move, I felt something warm in my hand.
I looked down and instantly became wide awake.
I was actually holding his hand!
I quickly withdrew my hand, my face turning red all the way to my neck.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to," I finally realized what that warm feeling in the dream had been.
Ming Wuhe, how could you do something so infatuated? How embarrassing.
Beiqing slightly tilted his head and coughed lightly into the fist of the hand I had just held.
"Ahem, it's fine..."
He said that, but I noticed a suspicious flush creeping up his ears.
I regretfully slapped my own cheek; it was all my fault. Even the way this dragon spoke had started to change—it felt like he was a bit shy.
"Are you feeling better now?"
Noticing that he had returned to a normal appearance, I asked with concern.
"Yeah... much better."
I frowned. What was going on? Why did his tone sound so awkward? Did he take the wrong medicine?
To confirm that he was indeed better, I stood up and lightly touched his forehead with the back of my hand.
It was indeed no longer hot.
"Thank you. No one has ever... cared for me like this," he suddenly spoke. I paused, a bit surprised.
I bit my lip, unsure of how to respond.
"I'll go get you a glass of water." I thought to myself that we could settle our accounts after he finished drinking.
Before I could take a step, I felt a weight on my right sleeve.
It was Beiqing holding onto me.
I looked at him, questioning with my eyes.
"I don't want water. Can you stay and chat with me for a while?" His voice was still a bit hoarse, but he insisted on saying this.
Chatting? Perfect timing, just what I wanted.
I decisively sat back down, expressionless.
"You are a dragon." I stated it as a fact.
He didn't expect me to be so straightforward about his identity, and his expression showed a hint of surprise.
After a long pause, he sighed lightly.
"Yes."
"What's your purpose?" I pressed on, not giving him any time to think.
"To protect you." He said it without hesitation this time. Even so, I still didn't believe him; his initial attitude towards me was still there, and it didn't seem like he wanted to protect me at all.
It seemed I wouldn't get an answer, and I felt a bit frustrated.
Suddenly, something came to my mind.
"You're afraid of wax, right?"
"Do you eat swallows?"
"Um... huh?" He looked at me in confusion, seemingly startled by my erratic train of thought.
"Do you love jewelry?" My questions became increasingly absurd.
The "Northern Dream Chronicles" once recorded that dragons love to eat swallows.
Although it's an ancient novel, I was still very curious. Here was a True Dragon right in front of me; if I didn't ask now, when would I? It would be a great story to tell my students later.
I stared at him with bright eyes full of anticipation. He seemed unable to handle my gaze and raised his large hand to block my view.
"You should read more historical texts; novels can affect your professionalism."
I pushed his dragon claw away and pouted a bit in disappointment.
At some point, my questioning of him turned into curious gossip.
I decided to go for broke and slowly extended a finger, tentatively asking, "One last question, can I... see you transform into a dragon?"
Hello everyone, my name is Ming Wuhe, and I am twenty-eight this year.
You might not believe it, but in my lifetime, I have seen a dragon, a living one.
I am currently in the Chaos Realm, surrounded by pure white.
A large black dragon is circling above me.
Breathing out clouds, riding the wind, it glides through the light, creating thunderous sounds as if the heavens and earth were born for it.
"Oh my..." I looked up at him in awe, my mouth agape the entire time, as if the scene from a dream had come to life, yet I couldn't distinguish between the two.
Returning to his true form, Beiqing roared in the sky with full force, more majestic than ever, as if he were the king of heaven and earth, and all things should bow down and worship him.
He swung his dragon body toward me and slowly stopped in front of me.
His dark green scales were smooth and hard, releasing a dazzling array of colors.
I had seen this marvelous yet indescribable phenomenon on my best friend's Mexican Black King Snake's belly.
The sunlight shone on its lazy snake body, reflecting a myriad of colors from its underbelly, making one marvel at the beautiful gifts of nature.
I stared intently at the great dragon before me.
He was enormous, but seemed to be afraid of startling me, so he kept his distance.
His jade-like eyes quietly gazed at me, filled with many emotions I couldn't comprehend, while his massive dragon body remained still, waiting for me to approach.
A human and a dragon stared at each other in the chaos.
His breath brushed against the loose strands of hair by my ear, pulling me back from my shock.
I slowly reached out my hand, inch by inch, touching him from his cheek, to the tip of his nose, then to his dragon ears and the warm sockets of his eyes.
I tilted my head curiously and poked the base of the Dragon Horn, wanting to touch it, but he was simply too tall; even on my tiptoes, I couldn't reach.
After hesitating for a moment, he cooperatively lowered his head slowly, the sharp Dragon Horn stopping right in front of me.
"Be careful not to get hurt," he reminded me.
I cautiously reached out, my fingertips gently brushing against the edge of the Dragon Horn; it was cold and very hard.
The novel sensation felt like discovering a new world.
As I touched the Dragon Horn, I intended to move higher, but for some reason, he slightly turned his head away, his breathing becoming a bit hurried.
Hmm? I looked at him with curiosity.
"Do you want to feel what it's like to fly in the air?" he suddenly asked.
A smile spread across my face, my tone unable to hide my excitement: "Can we?"
"Yes."
The dragon's head lightly tilted, and the feeling of weightlessness made me involuntarily let out a soft gasp. After a spin, I found myself sitting behind him.
"Hold on tight."
As he spoke, he began to move, while I closed my eyes and leaned down, gripping him tightly.
When I opened my eyes again, the surroundings were no longer a sea of white; instead, a vast blue sky stretched above me, with City C below.
Beiqing flew steadily and not too fast, his broad dragon body providing a great sense of security. So, I boldly straightened up and looked down.
A cool breeze brushed past my ears, seemingly magical as it swept away my fatigue.
However...
"Won't you be discovered like this?" I asked with some concern.
"They can't see us," Beiqing's voice came from below, mingling with the sound of the wind as it brushed against my ears.
It can be like this too. Looking at the shrinking city below, I suddenly understood why humans have been exploring how to fly for thousands of years.
This feeling of looking down upon the world is indeed very alluring.
Beiqing took me flying for quite a while, and it was only when I started to feel a bit hungry that we headed back home.
"I have class this afternoon and a meeting tomorrow night, so I'll probably be back late. You don't need to wait for me for dinner tomorrow," I said as I tidied myself up at the entrance, facing Beiqing, who was sitting on the sofa doing nothing.
"Okay." He turned his head to respond, his tone noticeably softer than usual, and even his gaze towards me had changed slightly.
What's going on? This feels strange.
I felt a chill run down my spine as I hurried out of the house.
...
In the middle of the night, I woke up from a nightmare, drenched in cold sweat, my pajamas soaked through.
I got up and sat at the edge of the bed, trying to calm my racing heart.
In the silent room, I was alone, quietly lost in thought against the headboard.
Faintly, I seemed to hear someone talking.
I lifted the blanket and tiptoed to the door, pressing my ear against it, holding my breath to listen.
The voices were soft, but I still caught words like "danger," "plan," and "obstacle."
The person spoke for a while before falling silent, as if waiting for another's response.
"I understand." A cold voice echoed in the darkness.
I recognized that voice all too well; it was Beiqing.
My heart sank, and my hands and feet turned icy.
Who were they? What were they planning? I couldn't shake off the feeling that some conspiracy was brewing in the shadows.
After a long while, the conversation outside ceased; it seemed that person had left, and everything returned to silence.
I waited for a moment before slowly opening the door and walking to the staircase. Beiqing was still there.
He stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window on the first floor, gazing outside. The faint moonlight cast a silver edge on his profile, and the atmosphere around him felt heavy.
His expression was obscured in the darkness, making it unclear what he was thinking.
Hearing a sound, I distinctly saw his back muscles tense for a moment before he naturally turned around and looked up at me, softly saying, "Why are you awake?"
Just pretending, I let out a subtle hum and acted as if nothing was wrong.
"I woke up from a nightmare. Why aren't you asleep?"
"I can't sleep," he replied slowly.
I responded with an "oh," calmly went to the kitchen to pour myself a glass of water, and then said, "You should rest early; staying up late isn't good for your health."
He chuckled lightly, his eyes sparkling with amusement.
"Okay."
We were both caught in a delicate tug-of-war.
After finishing my water, I headed upstairs to return to my bedroom.
I couldn't help but admire my own acting skills. Once I turned my back, I unconsciously curled my lips into a smile and finally burst into silent laughter.
"By the way, I'll drive you to work these days," he suddenly said, his eyes flickering with an ambiguous light.
I paused my steps as I went upstairs, trying to prevent my current smile from being discovered, so I didn't turn back.
"Mm."
I didn't understand why he said that, and my unease gradually grew, causing my smile to fade significantly.
As he mentioned, he had been dressed and waiting for me since early this morning.
After pondering for a moment, I ultimately decided to let him accompany me to school.
"What time will the meeting end tonight?" he asked distractedly while driving.
"I don't know, maybe around nine."
"Okay, I'll pick you up."
"…Mm."
Due to last night's events and Beiqing's strange attitude these past few days, I wasn't in a good state all day.
"Wuhe, why do you look so down?" The teacher sat across from me with a cup of Goji Berry Tea, looking like an old cadre.
"I didn't sleep well; maybe there have been too many things happening lately." My attention was entirely captured by the Goji Berry Tea in the teacher's hand.
Seeing the gleam in my eyes, the teacher quickly realized what his troublesome student was thinking. He hurriedly protected the cup in his hand and used his body to shield a large jar of Goji Berries behind him.
"Don't even think about it; this was specially prepared for me by your Mentor's Wife."
"Just a little, really, just a little." I excitedly wanted to rush to the teacher's desk and grab it directly.
The teacher, being older, couldn't compete with me and ultimately had to sadly give up his beloved Goji Berries.
"Bandit," he glared at me from his chair.
Having succeeded in my mischief, I smiled happily and didn't care about what the teacher said. "What's been going on with you these days? Busy?" The teacher casually asked as he blew on the steaming hot water.
"Um... it's about a friend."
"A friend, huh... coincidentally, I've been trying to help a friend too. His son has been going against him lately. But this old guy is also at fault; he's stubborn and unyielding. Wuhe, many times what you see isn't necessarily the truth; you need to delve deeper and look beyond the surface to understand the essence."
The teacher spoke earnestly, his ambiguous words seeming to hint at something.
I felt a bit confused.
"By the way, come over for dinner sometime. Your Mentor's Wife has been mentioning it for several days now. If you don't come soon, I might have to sleep in the study; you should feel sorry for me, your teacher."
After saying that, the teacher picked up a book and leisurely walked out of the office.
I chuckled; Mentor's Wife is a very lovely person, and she could indeed do something like that.
I pondered over the teacher's words: looking beyond the surface to understand the essence... what did that mean?
Never mind, I shook my head and opened my computer to look at the papers sent by my students.
Before I knew it, evening had arrived.
"Wuhe, it's time for the meeting," a female teacher called out to me.
I responded and quickly grabbed my materials before heading out.
The meeting went on for quite a while, and by the time it ended, it was almost ten o'clock. After the meeting, people left in small groups.
After saying goodbye to my colleagues, I returned to the office alone. I packed up my things, closed the door, and headed out.
The hallway lights had been broken for a few days and hadn’t been repaired yet. The entire hallway was dark and empty, with only me inside. A cold breeze occasionally swept through the stairwell.
I felt a chill run down my spine, pulled my neck in, took out my phone for light, and quickened my pace to leave.
Just before reaching the stairwell, I heard rustling sounds behind me.
Startled, I quickly turned around. Before I could see what it was, everything went dark and I fainted.
