An ocean liner was docked at the port, with many people coming and going, transporting items. Gu Yan directed them to move several large boxes into his room on the ship.
"Please be gentle; there are some fragile items inside," he advised the workers.
"Understood, Mr. Gu."
Once they finished their tasks, he returned to the deck, where his father and mother stood to bid him farewell.
Having grown accustomed to their son's travels, the couple was used to parting ways, but as a mother, she still felt reluctant. Most of the luggage was packed by her own hands.
His mother pulled Gu Yan aside and gave him a long list of reminders until his father interrupted her.
"Alright, he understands everything you've said; you don't need to worry so much," his father said, patting her hand in reassurance.
"It's almost time; you should set off now. Leave early. Don't worry about your mother. The longer you stay, the more reluctant she will be."
"Okay, Father, Mother," Gu Yan nodded. "Then I will depart."
His father smiled and said, "I wish you a smooth journey, my child."
As the ship's gangway slowly retracted, the massive vessel finally set sail. Everything seemed to rewind back to ten years ago on that same route; the water parted by the ship quickly filled back in, leaving no trace behind.
Gu Yan did not linger too long; after saying goodbye to his parents, he went straight back to his room from the deck.
As soon as he opened the door, he walked directly toward a large box in the corner. The box was locked and looked no different from the other scattered luggage around it, but Gu Yan recognized it by the marks he had made earlier.
He approached it, crouched down, and unlocked it with a key. Pulling on the latch, he lifted the lid, revealing a figure lying on its side inside.
Though the box was large, the person inside was clearly much taller. His legs were curled up in front of him due to the cramped space. His eyes were tightly shut as if he had been waiting for too long and had fallen asleep. However, at the moment Gu Yan opened the box, it seemed he sensed something and looked up directly at Gu Yan with his striking blue eyes.
Gu Yan stared into those eyes; although it wasn't their first direct gaze, each time he looked into them, he felt drawn in.
"Come out; there's no one else here now," Gu Yan said softly.
The person blinked but did not respond much; however, he seemed to have heard Gu Yan's words.
Just as Gu Yan wondered if he needed to repeat himself, he saw the person half-sit up in the box. Leaning forward, his upper body rested against the edge of the box, bringing them much closer together.
Gu Yan could feel the other's breath against his face and instinctively leaned back a bit to create some distance. The other did not press him; facing Gu Yan's retreating motion, he appeared calm and unbothered.
He sat in the box and slowly extended his delicate, fair hand towards Gu Yan, seemingly wanting Gu Yan to help him up. It felt like a spoiled princess from ancient times and her loyal knight, Gu Yan couldn't help but think. Nevertheless, he obediently grasped that hand and gave a slight upward push.
Their hands remained clasped until the man stood up from the box without letting go. Gu Yan, of course, had no idea what the other person was thinking, but the slightly cold palm in his hand made him feel grounded, so he unconsciously continued to hold on.
The man's body temperature seemed to always be relatively low. The last time they met at the alley, Gu Yan thought it was because he had been caught in the rain that he felt colder, but this time it seemed to be due to his own condition. Feeling the lower-than-average temperature in his hand, Gu Yan silently pondered.
Since their last encounter in the alley, Gu Yan had a vague feeling that this mysterious man might be closely related to his past. Aside from that beautiful face that seemed too exquisite for an ordinary person to possess, just based on how his scales had been unresponsive when they first met yet now felt slightly warm, Gu Yan would not easily let him go.
Although that day was quite rushed and he had to be mindful of time, Gu Yan still asked many questions, such as what is your name, where do you come from, and do we know each other? Unfortunately, he received no response at all.
Even if the other party had tried to evade his questions, Gu Yan could have at least caught some information from the gaps in his words. But the problem was that in response to all of Gu Yan's inquiries, the man did not utter a single word or even a sound.
Gu Yan tried to ask questions while searching for unusual emotions on that face, but throughout it all, the man only looked at Gu Yan with an indescribable gaze. He indeed did not attempt to run away, but Gu Yan felt as if he hadn’t cornered this person at all.
However, he did not give up; their recent encounter must not have been a coincidence. Gu Yan speculated that the other party might have intentionally approached him. Looking back now, the way they met and the escape route seemed deliberately designed to lead him into the alley, creating a space for them to be alone together.
This conveniently avoided any potential surveillance and made sense since no one could predict an unexpected chase after a thief. Gu Yan contemplated this possibility and decided to test the other party.
He pretended to look disappointed as if he intended to leave due to not obtaining any useful information. He stopped looking at the man and turned around to walk back along the path he came from. But just as he showed signs of giving up, the man suddenly grabbed his wrist and stopped him.
Just as I thought, Gu Yan mused inwardly. He turned around following the pull on his wrist and looked at the man with an inquisitive gaze: "If you won't let me go and aren't revealing any information, what exactly do you want?"
Yet even when Gu Yan threatened him with means of leaving, all he received was prolonged silence. The difference this time was that the man shook his head.
Gu Yan finally realized something; he cautiously asked, "You... can't speak?" The man turned his head away.
Gu Yan was now almost certain that this man indeed could not make a sound. A hint of regret flashed through his mind; if only this man could speak, only a voice as heavenly as his appearance would be worthy of such a face—what a pity.
The thought was fleeting as he raised his hand to check the time on his watch. It was almost time; there was no way he could spend more time chasing the pickpocket. Considering the time he had already spent with Dr. Li, if he disappeared for too long without reason, it would surely raise his father's suspicions.
However, since he had found a breakthrough, Gu Yan was not about to give up easily. He decided to place the man in a nearby rundown inn. Gu Yan paid for a month's rent and said to the man, "If you stay here, I will come back for you in a few days. Of course, you can choose to leave as well. It's entirely up to you." With that, he left on his own.
The choice of this mysterious man was now evident. Keeping him close might yield more information. Gu Yan held his broad palm, calculating in his mind.
