"What... does that mean?" Ma Yihan rolled over and stared at the ceiling with her big eyes, asking.
"Well... let me put it this way. A year ago, I got to know one of the families from the eight major financial conglomerates in the country, the Song Family. I hope to... book a hotel with them," Liu Xuan said deliberately.
"What do you mean by booking a hotel? Can you be clearer?" Ma Yihan pouted.
"It's a bit complicated to explain, so never mind. You'll find out later," Liu Xuan smiled and said, "Alright, dear, I'll handle the press conference first. We'll video chat tonight."
At five-thirty in the evening, in the Upper City Coast villa area of City S, the sea breeze gently blew along the coastline, making its way towards the bustling city along the seaside road. The sunset was beautifully displayed on Coastal Avenue, with cars heading south as far as the eye could see. The red taillights surrounded the city, slowly converging with the gradually illuminating villa area against the backdrop of the blood-red sky.
"Isn't the sky in City S beautiful?"
Seeing Wang Hao gazing dreamily at the scenery outside, Ren Yong'an slightly lowered his teacup, swallowed the tea he had just sipped, and asked.
"Yeah, it is," Wang Hao snapped back to reality and smiled, "After all, I'm not as wealthy as Commander Ren to settle down in a first-tier city like City S."
"Hahaha." Ren Yong'an set down his tea and picked a piece of grilled meat from the table for Wang Hao. Looking at his flattering smile, he pretended to take on a mentor's role and said, "Hey, don't think I seem rich now; it's all because I've worked hard since I was young. The hardships back then are really hard to describe. You've been working alongside me for quite some time now. But as my right-hand man, I want you to take fewer detours and suffer less. In a few years when I retire, I'll naturally give you opportunities for promotion. Don't worry."
"Ah? Hahaha, thank you so much for your careful nurturing, Mr. Ren!" Hearing Commander Ren say this made Wang Hao feign surprise on his face, but inside he felt it was what he deserved. He smiled and poured more tea into Ren Yong'an's cup.
"But that Jiang Yan... I don't know..." Wang Hao still felt uneasy about this old guy because Jiang Yan always considered him corrupt and viewed him as one of those who should be eliminated from the system. Although his hidden identity required him to be submissive and avoid confrontation with Jiang Yan, over time, Wang Hao couldn't help but harbor resentment.
He cautiously brought it up, hoping to get an affirmative response from Ren Yong'an.
"Him? Don't worry!" Commander Ren gave him a very affirmative answer. "Before long, that guy will be sent to prison. Trust me; I know he's quite annoying and caused a lot of trouble on the battlefield back then. I've already fallen out with Jiang Yan; you know that. Now that I have something on him, he won't be able to escape!"
"Ha! That's great! I really don't know how to repay you! Meeting Commander Ren in this lifetime is my greatest honor! Here, even though it's not alcohol, I want to toast you properly!" Saying this, Wang Hao held up his teacup with both hands in salute to Commander Ren.
Ren Yong'an was considered a high-ranking official within the system. Approaching middle age, he was an undisguised corrupt official who relied on extensive connections and money to climb up the ranks. The power in his hands primarily served his personal interests; he was a notorious libertine. Ironically, this type of person managed to reach a level comparable to General Jiang Yan through clever disguise.
These secrets were not known to the public; however, General Jiang Yan was well aware of them but had never managed to gather any evidence. During this zombie war, General Jiang Yan had forced them to unlock the Hydrogen Bomb launch procedure ahead of schedule but ended up giving Commander Ren an opportunity instead. To eliminate this potential threat to his interests as soon as possible, he filed a lawsuit against Jiang Yan under the pretext of "seriously interfering with national military operations," spurred on by Wang Hao.
Wang Hao had always targeted General Jiang Yan; Ren Yong'an didn't know why but found Wang Hao quite useful when it came time to sue Jiang Yan. Seeing how hard Wang Hao worked to send Jiang Yan to prison made Ren Yong'an think there might be some personal vendetta involved; he never bothered to ask further.
However, he certainly didn't know why Wang Hao was helping him so much since Wang Hao had never revealed his true identity to anyone.
When Commander Ren lit a cigarette, Wang Hao seized the opportunity to excuse himself for a bathroom break. The real reason was that Wang Hao despised the smell of nicotine; he couldn't understand why people liked smoking it—after all, it was a significant olfactory torment for him.
Having been invited to Commander Ren's home today without taking a bathroom break until now, Wang Hao closed the bathroom door and prepared to reveal himself when he relaxed and inadvertently glanced outside at the road. It wasn't completely dark yet; thanks to streetlights and passing car lights, he could barely make out the outlines of vehicles.
Wang Hao noticed an MPV that was rarely seen in this area—a deep blue one blending into the night; without lights on, it was hard to spot.
Wang Hao found it strange; having visited Commander Ren's home frequently over the past year or two, how come he had never seen these wealthy villa residents own such an inconspicuous MPV?
Although he felt that he was being overly anxious, the sense of crisis that had been suppressed in his heart for a long time began to stir, as if trying to tell him something. Wang Hao took one last look at the road outside the villa area and saw four people getting out of an MPV, one of whom had very conspicuous cherry-red hair...
Wait a minute?
Wang Hao's heart suddenly sank, a numbness spreading through him that only comes when disaster is imminent. "Cherry-red? Could it be..."
Recalling the photos he had collected earlier, Wang Hao quickly lowered his head to avoid the window, opened the door, and walked outside.
Meanwhile, on the road outside the villa area, the person with red hair following the other three across the street was not someone who dyed their hair; it was Lu Sha, who was naturally red-haired.
"Ren Yong'an, fifty-seven years old, Commander of the Strategic Military District in City S, graduated from... home address... B District, Building 17, 'Upper City Coast' villa area in City S," Lu Sha read from the information sent to everyone by Jiao An on her holographic watch as she walked. "Why does he seem quite impressive?"
"Many things can't be judged by appearances, Sasa," Jiao An said as she walked ahead. After showing her credentials to the security guard, she led An Xiaotian, Qin Weishan, and Lu Sha into the villa area and continued, "Society is much more complicated than you think and can be quite disgusting. Also, since this is your first time doing something like this with us, you must listen to us. After all, you're not a soldier."
"Oh..." Lu Sha replied, though she didn't quite understand what Jiao An meant. "So how is that guy going to be killed? Steamed? Braised? Or castrated?"
"Could it be alive-skinned?" Qin Weishan was the first to spot Villa 17. He pointed it out and started walking toward it.
From the moment they arrived until now, An Xiaotian hadn't said a word; he had been calculating the rescue plan in his mind. Just as he was pondering the next steps with his head down, a figure suddenly flashed out from the garden path ahead. An Xiaotian noticed that the person slightly tilted their head to look at their group before immediately lowering his head and walking into a nearby parking lot entrance. As they passed by the entrance, that person was still about ten steps away from it and hadn't moved far; they faced the wall with their head down as if trying to observe something out of the corner of their eye.
An Xiaotian frowned and cautiously looked around. The person's behavior was strange enough that An Xiaotian began to suspect whether Ren Yong'an had already taken countermeasures.
After confirming again, An Xiaotian walked at the back of the group and glanced back at the parking lot entrance as they began their ambush plan.
Inside Villa 17, Ren Yong'an had no idea what was about to happen; to him, it was just another ordinary weekend. Just moments ago, Wang Hao had claimed there was an urgent matter at home and left. His wife and daughter were still out shopping and hadn't returned yet; now in the large villa, only Ren Yong'an was alone.
"Sigh, why do I have to go back so early today..." Ren Yong'an complained to himself while eating. As he searched through his food with chopsticks, suddenly there was a loud thud from the bathroom behind him.
Ren Yong'an paused for a moment, thinking it might be a flower pot blown over by the wind. After swallowing his food, he patted his pants and prepared to step outside to check.
However, just a few steps out of the living room, Ren Yong'an felt a warm current flowing down his back; it wasn't anything physical but rather felt like someone was staring at him from behind.
"Ah?!"
Thinking this way made Ren Yong'an jump in surprise; from the reflection of a copper decoration in his home, he vaguely saw...
"Please cooperate with us, Commander Ren; we don't want to resort to violence."
"Wah—" Ren Yong'an suddenly turned around in panic, eyes wide with fear as he stared at Jiao An who had somehow snuck into his home without him noticing. He kept retreating backward with his fingers reaching out as if trying to touch something but was grabbed by someone’s hand.
"Be obedient, Commander Ren."
"Ah!" Ren Yong'an jumped in fright, realizing that An Xiaotian had appeared behind him without him noticing.
"Are you all crazy? Can't you just knock on the door when you visit?!" Ren Yong'an, a high-ranking commander, looked like a comedic actor on stage, his expression exaggerated. Two people had silently appeared in his home and surrounded him; anyone would be scared half to death in such a situation.
"Alright, enough small talk," An Xiaotian said with a stern face as Qin Weishan and Lu Sha, who had just climbed in through the window, walked out from the bathroom. Lu Sha pulled out a rope hidden at his waist and deftly tied it around Ren Yong'an's hands, while Qin Weishan donned mechanical gauntlets and approached the bewildered and helpless Ren Yong'an.
"What do you want?! I'll pay anything!" Ren Yong'an shouted like a pig being led to slaughter during the New Year.
"You think we care about your worthless money?" An Xiaotian pulled out his phone and held up a news article about General Jiang in front of Ren Yong'an's eyes. "Now, let's have a good talk about this matter, shall we?"
