Li Gonggong's expression of triumph instantly froze. He suddenly stood up, grabbing the guard by the collar and shouted hoarsely, "What did you say? Say it again!"
The guard trembled in fear at Li Gonggong's rage and stammered, "The... the Emperor... has already led the Imperial Guard... into the city! Right now, they are... heading towards the palace!"
Li Gonggong threw the guard to the ground, his face pale with anger. He paced back and forth, frowning deeply, lost in thought. After a moment, a fierce glint flashed in his eyes as he gritted his teeth and said, "You old fool, how dare you play tricks on me! Come here!"
"Li Gonggong!" Two guards entered in response, kneeling on one knee.
"Send the order down immediately to gather all troops and come with me to defend the palace gates! Today, I will fight that old fool to the death!" Li Gonggong's eyes burned with fury, resembling an enraged beast.
"Yes!" The two guards accepted their orders and quickly gathered their forces in preparation for battle.
At this moment, Zhang Yun rode alongside the Emperor at the front of the advancing Imperial Guard, a massive force moving towards the palace.
"Your Majesty, Li Gonggong is cornered and desperate; we must end this quickly to avoid prolonged troubles," Zhang Yun said gravely as he rode closer to the Emperor.
The Emperor nodded slightly, a cold light flashing in his eyes. "I will never let this treacherous minister go!"
As they spoke, the Imperial Guard was already approaching the palace. Li Gonggong had long since stationed heavy troops at the palace gates, ready for battle.
"Kill them!"
"Charge!"
The thunderous battle cries echoed through the air as a bloody fight was about to erupt. The morale of the Imperial Guard soared as they charged towards the palace gates like tigers descending a mountain, engaging fiercely with the rebel forces. The clash of swords and flashes of blades created a horrific scene of carnage that was hard to bear.
Zhang Yun wielded his sword and led from the front like a war god; wherever he passed, rebels fell one after another. He fought his way through a bloody path directly towards Li Gonggong at the palace gates.
Seeing Zhang Yun charging towards him with murderous intent, Li Gonggong's eyes flashed with panic as he hurriedly directed his guards to step forward and block him.
"Protect Li Gonggong!"
Several guards armed with long swords surrounded Li Gonggong and engaged in a fierce battle with Zhang Yun.
Zhang Yun was highly skilled in martial arts and struck ruthlessly, quickly dispatching several guards. He advanced step by step towards Li Gonggong, his eyes filled with murderous intent.
Seeing the situation turning against him, Li Gonggong turned pale with fear and collapsed to the ground. He looked at the approaching Zhang Yun in terror and trembled as he said, "Lord Zhang, spare me! Spare me!"
Zhang Yun coldly regarded Li Gonggong, showing no trace of pity. "Li Gonggong, as the Chief Eunuch of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, you were blinded by greed and plotted rebellion. Now that you find yourself in this predicament, it is your own doing!"
With that, Zhang Yun raised his sword, ready to take Li Gonggong's life.
"Stop!"
A commanding voice rang out as the Emperor arrived with a group of Imperial Guards, halting Zhang Yun.
Zhang Yun quickly sheathed his sword and turned to bow to the Emperor. "Your Majesty!"
The Emperor dismounted and approached Li Gonggong, looking down at him with disappointment and anger in his eyes. "Li Gonggong, I have treated you well. Why have you betrayed me?"
Li Gonggong's face was ashen as he stammered, "Your Majesty... I... I was momentarily confused..."
"Hmph! Momentarily confused?" The Emperor scoffed. "Do you think I would still believe your nonsense?"
Turning to the Imperial Guard Commander behind him, the Emperor ordered, "Take Li Gonggong away and imprison him in the Heavenly Prison to await his fate!"
"Yes!" The Imperial Guard Commander complied, instructing his men to bind Li Gonggong tightly and escort him away.
After Li Gonggong was taken away, the Emperor approached Zhang Yun, patting him on the shoulder with a tone of gratitude. "Zhang Aiqing, thanks to you this time; otherwise, the consequences would have been unimaginable!"
Zhang Yun quickly knelt down and said, "I dare not claim credit; this is what I should do."
The Emperor helped Zhang Yun up and said, "There is no need for such formalities, my dear minister. You have made such great contributions to the court, and I must reward you handsomely!"
Zhang Yun felt a chill in his heart; he understood the principle of "great merit shaking the ruler." He quickly replied, "Your Majesty, I am just a commoner. Everything I have done is for Great Qian and for you, so I cannot ask for any rewards."
The Emperor looked at Zhang Yun with a hint of admiration in his eyes. He understood Zhang Yun's thoughts and said, "Since that is the case, I will not insist. I know you are a person who values simplicity over fame and fortune; however, I still want to bestow an honor upon you."
Zhang Yun wanted to decline further, but the Emperor waved his hand to stop him. "My mind is made up; do not refuse. I have decided to confer upon you the title of 'The Greatest Chancellor in the World' to recognize your integrity and loyalty to the country."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Yun was deeply moved and knelt down to express his gratitude. "I thank Your Majesty for your great kindness!"
The Emperor helped Zhang Yun up again and said, "Alright, rise. Today I am exhausted in body and mind; I will return to the palace to rest. You should also return home and rest early."
"I humbly send off Your Majesty!"
Zhang Yun watched as the Emperor departed, feeling a mix of emotions. He knew that although he had prevented a rebellion, the crisis facing the Great Qian Dynasty was far from resolved. He decided to protect this country in his own way.
