She sighed, changed her clothes, hopped on her electric bike, and casually bought a cake on the way to school to pick up her son, making her way to Yue Town at a leisurely pace.
"Li Family Daughter-in-Law is here!"
As Sun Bai parked her electric bike, an elderly woman basking in the rare sunny day at the alley's entrance greeted her with a smile.
"Yes, are you resting?" Sun Bai replied while lifting her son from the child seat and adjusting the bike.
According to the town's hierarchy and age, the elderly woman was a senior, so Sun Bai didn’t want to appear rude. She took the cake out of the bike basket and walked over to the elderly woman. "Auntie, today is my dad's birthday; would you like to join us?"
The elderly woman grimaced and revealed a row of yellow dentures. "I wouldn't step into that house; it's filthy!"
Sun Bai awkwardly chuckled twice. "Alright, Auntie, then you rest here; I’ll head over." She stood up, took Li Ming's hand, and was about to enter the alley when the elderly woman tugged at the hem of Sun Bai's shirt and earnestly said, "Sun Bai, you should talk to Li Cheng. After all, he’s an educated man; he shouldn’t be acting like this. Go ask around; who in town doesn’t complain about his family being dirty? Both father and son have wives and children; how can they be involved with another woman? Let’s not even mention that woman is Ali’s wife; Ali is a fool and doesn’t count. But Chengzi has a son this big now—don’t you think you should say something as his daughter-in-law?"
Sun Bai's lips trembled. "Ali—when did he get married?"
"You don’t know this as his sister-in-law?" The elderly woman pondered under Sun Bai's confused gaze. "I’m getting old; I can’t remember exactly, but it must have been at least half a year ago. Hey, let me tell you, Ali’s wife is quite pretty; she usually puts on eye makeup and lipstick, not like a good woman. Li Family Daughter-in-Law, you don’t know this—this woman has been involved with Chengzi and Li Weimin; you really need to take care of it..."
Sun Bai didn’t know how she made it to the Li Family’s door. Her son Xiao Ming was shaking her hand, calling out “Mom” several times before she snapped back to reality and forced a smile at him. When she looked up, the courtyard gate was right in front of her.
The two doors were closed, and there were rustling noises coming from inside.
Sun Bai’s mind buzzed as she suddenly felt like she wasn’t herself anymore. The part of her occupied by courage and resentment made her abruptly release her son’s hand and bang heavily on the wooden door.
The noise inside instantly stopped, like mice in a granary at midnight that freeze upon hearing any sound.
After waiting for a moment without anyone coming to open the door from inside, she pounded again with determination as if she wouldn’t stop until the door was broken down.
Finally, someone inside surrendered.
"Who—ah—" It was Li Li’s lazy yet silly voice.
"It’s me."
At that moment, Sun Bai felt like a hedgehog; Li Ming stood quietly beside her, too timid to speak.
The door opened, revealing Li Li after a long absence. He had dirt on his shoulders—dark soil that was wet—and there was dirt on his knees and pant legs as well. But Sun Bai didn’t notice any of that; she pushed him aside roughly and stepped directly across the threshold.
"Where's your brother?"
The yard was just as empty as when she returned home earlier; no one was around as if the whole family had managed to escape collectively upon learning of her arrival.
"Dad—Dad is celebrating his birthday; Brother took him and Mom—and his wife—to eat a big meal."
A sudden wave of despair washed over Sun Bai, akin to an ancient man marrying multiple wives while his legitimate wife lost favor to a concubine. She was his wife! The one who had registered their marriage and bore him a son! On his father’s birthday, he didn’t even bother to greet her but directly took his mistress out instead. Ironically, both elders knew about this matter yet chose to cover it up; what did they think of her? A dispensable plaything? Did they think they could bully her because she had no parents and was left alone?
Sun Bai stood in the center of the yard, breathing heavily and anxiously. After a while, she suddenly pushed open the door to the main room and rushed inside, turning into the west room. The bed was neatly made, and the wardrobe contained only Li Cheng's clothes.
Feeling unwilling to accept this, Sun Bai exited the main room and entered the small room where Li Li lived. The originally dim, low, shabby, and dilapidated space had taken on a new appearance. On the bed, covered with bedding, were two entangled pieces of clothing—one was a woman's and the other was Li Cheng's.
Sun Bai suddenly crouched down and cried out loud, holding her head. Li Li stood helplessly by the door, saying, "Sister-in-law—sister-in-law—don't cry—"
Sun Bai trembled slightly, slowly raising her head to look at the thin figure standing in the sunlight. A surge of hatred exploded in her mind. She got up, grabbed Li Li, and walked to the yard entrance. Upon seeing her son waiting outside, she said, "Stay here and don't go anywhere. Wait for me to come get you."
Li Li was almost dragged out as he asked, "Sister-in-law, where are we going?"
Sun Bai did not respond.
"Sister-in-law, brother will be back soon. There will be good food when he returns—we'll wait for him—"
"Sister-in-law—"
The sun-warmed mother-in-law seemed to realize she had caused trouble and had disappeared with the stool in hand.
"Stand still!" Sun Bai commanded sharply, releasing her grip on Li Li. He mumbled but dared not move an inch.
Sun Bai clattered as she dismantled the child seat and tossed it aside. Then she forced Li Li into the back seat before getting on the bike and driving onto the road.
There was a market about three to five miles away from Yue Town, where there were certainly inns and hotels.
When Sun Bai paid for a room, Li Li seemed to realize something and whimpered, refusing to enter.
The cashier looked at them with a strange expression.
Sun Bai turned her head to glare at Li Li, who was clinging to the door frame with eyes sharp as knives. "If you still remember my kindness, then come inside with me!"
Li Li stood frozen for a while; perhaps he was intimidated by Sun Bai's gaze. Slowly, he released his grip on the door frame and allowed Sun Bai to take him upstairs with the room key.
Once inside, there was no time for washing up or foreplay; Sun Bai didn't know where she found the strength but threw Li Li onto the bed. Standing beside it, she looked down at him disdainfully. In his eyes, there was nothing but innocence. When she first met him while visiting her parents-in-law with Li Cheng, he was a pitiful yet laughable figure; even then his eyes were so clean and clear. All these years later, they hadn't changed at all. In their first two years of marriage, she had taken care of him like a child...
Sun Bai shook her head; what good was it to think about these things now?
She was Li Cheng's wife—legally protected and married—and now Li Cheng was openly cheating on her. His whole family brazenly deceived and insulted her. If she didn't do something about it now, she would truly die—she would die in despair.
She straddled one leg over Li Li's body and tore at his old pants. When they came off, however, his member was limp. Despite his muffled sounds of resistance, she tried every possible way to stimulate him, but throughout it all, there was no reaction whatsoever.
"You useless waste!" Sun Bai collapsed beside him in defeat, burying her head in the blanket. "He slept with your wife; don't you hate him? Don't you want revenge? Don't you want to sleep with his wife too?"
"Sister-in-law—" Li Li pulled up his pants and squatted by the bed, cautiously calling out, "Sister-in-law, don't be sad."
Sun Bai immediately burst into tears.
Sun Bai left, exhausted from crying, leaving Li Li alone in the hotel.
