"Hello, who are you?!" An Xin Ya turned her face to the side, listening attentively to the movements of the stranger standing at the door.
Finally, she saw An Xin Ya. It turned out she lived in a small town in Las Vegas, which was quite easy to find. Her home was in Building 2, Unit 3 of an old residential area.
Seeing An Xin Ya made Shouya incredibly happy. He had always watched her from a distance, but never this closely. She was truly beautiful, with delicate features and elegant eyes, like a fairy.
"Xinya, who is it? Ahem..." Just as Shouya was about to introduce himself, a faint voice came from inside the room.
Hearing that voice made Shouya uneasy. He raised his eyes to look inside and saw an elderly woman lying on a bed in another room, struggling to get up.
"Grandma!" An Xin Ya's expression changed slightly upon hearing her grandmother's cough. She hurriedly turned away from the stranger at the door and rushed into the room. "Grandma, are you okay? I'll get your medicine..."
Shouya followed her into Grandma An's room and saw her looking unwell. As a doctor, he could tell immediately that she was seriously ill. He took her hand to check her pulse, his expression growing serious. After examining her face and eyes, he straightened up and said to An Xin Ya, who was bringing medicine, "Your grandmother is very ill; she needs to be taken to the hospital."
An Xin Ya froze for a moment. This was an unfamiliar voice, and she felt nervous. "Who are you? You entered my house without my permission! Get out... get out..."
"Who I am isn't important; what's important is getting your grandmother to the hospital," Shouya said with a furrowed brow. He noticed that An Xin Ya was holding some antibiotics and quickly took them from her hands. "These medications shouldn't be given to your grandmother without proper guidance; she needs to see a doctor first."
"I..." He was right. Hearing that her grandmother was so seriously ill shocked An Xin Ya. She had no idea what to do other than give her medicine. Her grandmother's health had never been great; she often took medication, and there were countless bottles in the drawer.
Without hesitation, Shouya carefully lifted Grandma An onto his back and quickly left the room.
"Grandma, Grandma! Where are you taking my grandma?" An Xin Ya sensed something was wrong and stumbled out of the room to the door. She heard heavy footsteps coming from the stairs. Who was he? Why did she feel such a strong sense of unease?
Not hearing any sounds made An Xin Ya want to cry, tears welling up in her eyes.
Footsteps echoed again in her ears, growing fainter as they hurried away. Shouya placed Grandma An in the car and then rushed back inside. He was shocked to see An Xin Ya collapsed on the ground crying. His heart tightened as he hurried over to help her up, but she forcefully pushed him away and shouted, "Where did you take my grandma?"
"Your grandmother is very ill; we need to get her to the hospital for treatment quickly. If we delay, it could be life-threatening!"
Hearing how serious it was made An Xin Ya's face fill with terror. She didn't want to lose her grandmother; she only had her left as family. "Okay!" An Xin Ya nodded vigorously. She didn't care whether he was good or bad or what his intentions were; she just needed to follow him to the hospital because her grandmother's health was the most important thing right now.
Once in the car, An Xin Ya supported Grandma An while Shouya quickly took his seat in the driver's position, started the engine, and drove rapidly toward the hospital.
Soon they arrived at the hospital. Shouya was holding Grandma An and hurriedly ran inside, anxiously shouting, "Doctor, nurse..."
At that moment, the doctors and nurses pushed a bed forward. Shouya carefully placed Grandma An onto the bed. He was panting and sweating as he watched Grandma An being wheeled into the operating room.
"Grandma, Grandma..." An Xin Ya tightly grasped Shouya's shirt corner. Hearing the chaotic footsteps and the sound of the gurney, she caught a whiff of a pungent medicinal smell. This was indeed a hospital; he hadn't lied to her.
Shouya supported her and looked at her complicated expression. Her hollow eyes were filled with tears. Seeing An Xin Ya like this made him feel quite upset. He comforted her, saying, "Don't worry, Grandma has already been taken into the operating room."
An Xin Ya sat anxiously on a bench in the hospital waiting for her grandmother. Shouya walked over with a bottle of mineral water he had just bought outside and sat down beside her, gently saying, "Drink some water!"
He took her hand, placed the water in her palm, and reassured her, "Don't worry, Grandma will be fine!"
An Xin Ya held the mineral water, her expression sorrowful as she lowered her head without saying a word. She kept praying in her heart, hoping that Grandma would be okay and recover! For some reason, having him by her side gave her a sense of security and made her feel more at ease.
At that moment, the door to the operating room opened, and a doctor in a white coat came out holding a report.
Shouya quickly stood up and walked to the doctor, asking, "How is the patient?"
The doctor recognized Shouya. His eyes crinkled with a smile as he took off his mask and reviewed the report in his hand. He said, "The patient has a tumor in the stomach, but fortunately it is benign. It was discovered in time, and we have already removed it. However, the patient will need to stay in the hospital for observation for a few days."
Hearing this from the doctor, Shouya breathed a sigh of relief and smiled as he said, "Thank you, doctor!"
After the doctor left, Shouya approached An Xin Ya to tell her that Grandma was okay. Just then, the operating room door opened again, and nurses wheeled Grandma An out into the ward area.
Entering the ward, An Xin Ya walked to her grandmother's bedside with Shouya's support. She reached out to touch Grandma's hand. After hearing that Grandma was fine earlier, she felt both excited and guilty. The guilt stemmed from feeling useless for not being able to take care of Grandma. If it weren't for that car accident six years ago, perhaps her adoptive mother would still be around. Then she wouldn't have insomnia and would have been able to care for Grandma; their family could have been happy together.
After staying in the ward for a while, An Xin Ya and Shouya stepped out.
An Xin Ya's hollow eyes gazed ahead as she listened intently to the sounds around them. She heard Shouya beside her and gratefully said to him, "Thank you! If it weren't for you, I really wouldn't know what I would do."
"It's nothing; it's what I should do," Shouya replied shyly. Seeing An Xin Ya looking confused, he added, "If others saw it too, they would do the same."
"It's all my fault. If I didn't have my eyes and wasn't blind..."
Shouya quickly interrupted her, grabbing her hands and looking into her beautiful eyes, saying, "You can't blame yourself for this. Please don't feel guilty."
"But I..." An Xin Ya was moved, her eyes filled with tears, and two glistening drops fell as her voice choked.
"Stop blaming yourself!" Seeing her cry again, Shouya felt a pang of distress in his heart. He furrowed his brow and gently wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, saying, "Don't cry! If Grandma wakes up, she wouldn't want to see your tear-streaked face."
An Xin Ya nodded and wiped away the tears on her face. Realizing her earlier outburst, she shyly said, "I'm sorry!"
Seeing her like this eased Shouya's heart significantly, and a faint smile unconsciously appeared on his lips.
"Oh right, I forgot to ask your name!" An Xin Ya remembered that she hadn't had the chance to ask him who he was since they left home for the hospital.
Shouya smiled and said, "My name is Shouya."
Noticing her slightly furrowed brows as if she didn't understand, he continued, "My surname is Shou, like in sushi, and 'Ya' is like the arrow that never wavers."
An Xin Ya seemed to recall something and chuckled softly, covering her mouth with her hand.
Her laughter was truly beautiful, like a blooming flower that delighted the heart and made him feel elated.
Furrowing his brows, Shouya asked, "What's wrong? Is it that funny?"
"No, it's nothing!" An Xin Ya replied with a smile. "Just remember to treat me to sushi next time."
So that's what it was. Earlier when she looked confused, he had earnestly explained his name, which led to an accidental mention of sushi. Faisal often teased him about that in private.
"I'll walk you back!" Shouya changed the subject.
"No, I want to stay and take care of Grandma," An Xin Ya said.
"There are doctors and nurses here; they will take good care of Grandma. Besides, she needs to rest now, and no one can go in to disturb her. With your eyes not in good condition, if something happens while you're here looking after her, wouldn't you be flustered and at a loss?" Shouya looked at An Xin Ya, who was frowning and looking troubled. He understood that she wanted to be by her grandmother's side, but she needed care herself. How could she take care of someone else?
An Xin Ya had no words to say and could only walk out of the hospital with Shouya's assistance. The sunlight outside was bright, shining on her face with a scorching sensation.
Carefully sitting in the passenger seat, An Xin Ya fumbled for the seatbelt.
Shouya quickly walked around the front of the car, opened the door, and sat in the driver's seat. He saw An Xin Ya trying to buckle her seatbelt but struggling to do so. He smiled gently, took the seatbelt from her hand, and secured it for her.
An Xin Ya felt his warmth and caught a whiff of his fresh scent mixed with a hint of masculinity, causing her heart to race uncontrollably. She instinctively placed her hand over her chest. Although she couldn't see him, she felt a sense of familiarity and wondered if he was the same man she had encountered in the music room.
Shouya started the car, and it smoothly drove onto the road.
Throughout the journey, neither of them spoke. The quiet atmosphere in the car felt somewhat oppressive and awkward.
"Brother Shouya, um, can I call you Brother Shouya?" An Xin Ya suddenly asked, breaking the tense silence.
"Of course," Shouya replied with a slight smile.
"Brother Shouya, my name is An Xin Ya; you can call me Xinya from now on!" An Xin Ya placed her hand on her chest as she introduced herself to Shouya.
"An Xin Ya!" Shouya had already learned her name from Yuga. True to her name, she was calm and elegant. He pronounced her name slowly and deliberately as if he wanted to engrave it deeply in his heart.
