"He wants me to raise a Zombie!" Lin Fan looked at the figure of "one hundred thousand a month" on the contract, his palms slightly sweating.
"This is a Nationally Protected Animal," the director said with a kind smile, handing Lin Fan a cup of tea. "We don't trust just anyone with this."
Lin Fan chuckled awkwardly, thinking to himself that who would feel safe raising something that eats people? Even for a million a month, he wouldn't do it.
"The last caretaker quit and is now writing novels," the director pointed to a signed new book on the desk. "It's selling very well and has already gone to its third printing."
On the cover of the new book, a grotesque Zombie grinned widely, revealing a chilling smile. The title was—
"I Have a Date with a Zombie."
Lin Fan shivered, picturing himself being chased and bitten by a Zombie, and shook his head vigorously, trying to shake off the terrifying thought.
"I'll... think about it some more," he said as he set down the teacup and stood up to leave.
"Young man," the director called out to him, "I understand your concerns, but Xiao Tang is different from those Zombies in movies; she's very well-behaved."
"Well-behaved..." Lin Fan looked at him in disbelief, as if he had heard something absurd. A Zombie being described as "well-behaved"?
"How about this," the director noticed his hesitation, "you can go meet Xiao Tang and spend a day with her. If it really doesn't work out, I'll help you find another job."
In the end, tempted by money and dreams of the future, Lin Fan gritted his teeth and signed this special "contract of servitude."
As he walked home, the sunset's glow fell on him but couldn't dispel the gloom in his heart. Lin Fan kept replaying the director's words in his mind, while various terrifying scenes from Zombie movies uncontrollably surfaced in his thoughts.
"Ding ding ding—"
The phone suddenly rang, startling Lin Fan. He fumbled to take out his phone, and a strange number flashed on the screen.
"Hello?" Lin Fan answered the call, his tone slightly tense.
"Hello, is this... Mr. Lin Fan?" The voice on the other end was somewhat hoarse and hesitant.
"Yes, it is. Who are you?" Lin Fan held the phone tightly, a sense of unease rising within him.
"I am..." The caller paused, as if organizing their thoughts. "I was the previous caretaker of Xiao Tang."
"The previous caretaker?" Lin Fan's heart tightened as images of the novel titled "I Have a Date with a Zombie" flashed through his mind. "Could it be..."
"Um... hello," he tried to suppress his inner anxiety and asked calmly, "What is it that you need?"
"Listen," the voice suddenly dropped in tone and quickened in pace, "this job... it's not simple. Xiao Tang... she's not what you think she is..."
Beep—beep—beep—
Before the caller could finish, the line went dead with a busy signal.
"Hello? Hello?" Lin Fan shouted into the phone several times but received no response.
Frustrated, he ran his fingers through his hair. This mysterious call only added to the weight of his already anxious feelings.
“ Xiao Tang... she is not what I thought...” The other person's words echoed in Lin Fan's ears. What did it mean?
Lin Fan came to his senses and realized he had already reached his front door.
He walked into the room and looked around; it was empty. A sense of inexplicable panic surged within him, his heart began to race, and cold sweat formed in his palms.
“ Xiao Tang?”
Lin Fan called out softly, his voice trembling slightly.
The room was silent, with only his echo resonating in the empty space.
Lin Fan walked over to the corner where the toys were arranged. Everything here was neat and orderly, showing no signs of a Zombie having been present.
Could it be... she escaped?
The thought sent a chill down his spine.
Lin Fan hurriedly turned around, intending to find the principal, but suddenly heard a clattering sound coming from the kitchen.
He stepped lightly, slowly making his way toward the kitchen.
Through the partially open door, Lin Fan saw a small figure awkwardly trying to open the refrigerator.
