When I returned to the rental house, it was already 5:30 in the morning, and the sky outside was a dark blue.
Xie Annan I turned on the living room light and saw that the milk and cookies on the coffee table had all been bitten and chewed, with milk spilling onto the floor.
"Damn it, did the mice get in again?" Xie Annan stared at the scattered cookies on the table, feeling a surge of anger.
He cursed loudly while throwing the milk and cookies from the bag into the trash can, thinking about the huge rat that had escaped through the kitchen window that night, guessing it must be the same one. But it clearly saw how I scalded that little mouse to death, so how dare it come back here?
"Could it be a mother and child seeking revenge?" South Bank rubbed his chin.
After thinking for a while, Xie Annan felt that it was not impossible. He began to hate the mouse even more, lit a cigarette, and planned how to kill the thing.
"Alright, you want to fight with me, huh? Tomorrow, I'll arrange rat poison and mouse traps for you." Xie Annan took a few puffs of his cigarette, put it out, and went to sleep directly on the sofa. The cheap bottle of red wine he had just drunk was giving him a headache.
I slept heavily until noon, Xie Annan got up, washed my face, went downstairs to pack a lunch box, and then went to the street to buy mouse traps and rat poison.
He placed the rat poison next to the kitchen sink, and moved the mouse trap from the kitchen to the hallway in the living room. He considered all the routes that the mice would take, and now he's just waiting for that damn mouse to show up.
The noisy downstairs gradually quieted down until after midnight. Lying in bed, unable to fall asleep, I quietly listened to the sounds outside. Unfortunately, after listening for over an hour, there was no movement, and I eventually fell asleep.
I don't know how long I slept, but the sound of crinkling plastic bags in the living room woke me up. I opened my eyes, gritted my teeth, feeling annoyed. I listened quietly to the sound, clearly a rat rummaging through the plastic bag to steal cookies. After listening for a few minutes, I cursed under my breath and got up quietly, tiptoeing to the living room.
In the instant the light came on, a big rat darted across the coffee table, then in a few seconds, it leaped onto the balcony and onto a tree branch.
"Motherf***er." Xie Annan muttered under his breath, glanced at the night outside the balcony, then ran to the kitchen. He found that the mousetraps and rat poison had not been touched, feeling both angry and puzzled at how the rats had managed to evade these traps.
Just then, a branch outside made a noise, and Xie Annan turned to see the big rat sitting on the branch, staring at him quietly.
Are mice so clever now, even knowing how to provoke humans? Xie Annan took a glance and found that it was indeed the same one as before at the window, after all, such a large mouse is very rare.
Xie Annan muttered something to the mouse in a low voice, but couldn't do anything about it, so he had to close the window and go back to bed to continue sleeping.
In his deep sleep, he had a strange dream that he had grown a coat of rat fur and was staying in a damp and dark sewer. In front of him, there was a dense group of little rats bowing to him as their leader.
At night, in this old and dilapidated neighborhood on Chang'an Street, only a few households were still lit up. The several old buildings, each six stories high, had walls covered in a layer of stone rice, which had already peeled off in many places and was covered in sticky moss.
Xie Annan has been wandering around this neighborhood for a few days. He knows that most of the people living here are elderly and are becoming forgetful. Stealing money from these elderly people is the easiest.
At one o'clock in the night, Xie Annan looked up at the moon, spat out his cigarette and stepped on it, then walked into one of the buildings. The iron gate of the stairwell is covered in rust, secured with a lock from the 90s.
Xie Annan pulled out a bunch of keys, flipped through them, and found no suitable key. Finally, they poked open the iron lock with a piece of wire, and the iron door creaked open.
The sensor light in the corridor had already broken. Xie Annan felt their way to the third floor, stopping at the door of unit 303 on the left corridor. An elderly living alone lived in this unit, and Xie Annan had been observing for three days.
He spent a few seconds unlocking the door, then carefully felt his way inside.
The room was a living room with moonlight shining on the wooden sofa through the window. The entire living room was cluttered with miscellaneous items, and the only electrical appliance was an old television. Xie Annan glanced around and then walked quietly to the bedroom door.
He pushed open the door a little, and moonlight also shone into the room. The old man on the bed was snoring. Xie Annan went in directly and started searching the bedside table.
Generally, old people like to keep money in places like mooncake boxes, under pillows, and under the mattress.
Xie Annan He didn't find anything valuable in the cabinet, so he bent down to search under the old man's pillow. After feeling around for a while, he touched a stack of banknotes wrapped in plastic bags. He felt happy in his heart and slowly pulled them out.
But at this moment, the old man moved, and Xie Annan was startled. He quickly crouched down and hid under the bed.
After about a minute of silence, the old man did not make any more sound. It seemed that he had just turned over. The tension in Xie Annan's heart eased a little. He got up and looked at the old man in the dim light, then reached out to continue feeling under the pillow.
Just as his hand touched the stack of money, Xie Annan felt something was not right. He looked carefully at the old man and saw a big rat squatting at the head of the bed.
The body size is similar to the one at home before. Could it be the same one?
Xie Annan Without much thought, the mouse suddenly jumped onto the old man's face and bit his nose. The old man screamed in pain and sat up abruptly.
He cursed under his breath, turned abruptly, and ran into the living room. The old man on the bed was bewildered for a few seconds, then suddenly shouted "thief!" and hurriedly chased into the living room. But Xie Annan had already disappeared.
The old man took a few deep breaths and, as he regained his composure, realized that something had bitten his nose. He reached up to touch it and found a sticky, bloody mess.
He returned to the room, turned on the light, and a huge rat darted out of the window.
