The heavy stone slab descended, sealing off the entrance to the secret passage, and darkness quickly filled the space.
"Don't panic, just keep walking!"
Baron's voice echoed in the passage, his deep tone soothing everyone.
Frowning slightly, Freya thought for a moment and then walked uncertainly towards Baron, asking, "Father, why didn't Aunt Mary come with us? Could it be...?"
After a long pause, Baron's voice reached her ears.
"Mm!"
In the darkness, she couldn't see Baron's expression and didn't know how he felt, but Freya's heart ached slightly. She genuinely liked that somewhat talkative woman who always cared for her. She never expected that in the end, she wouldn't make it through...
"Stop thinking about it! Beyond this passage is the road outside Tear Town. With Saladin's speed of invasion, we will be safe for the time being."
Baron deliberately changed the subject, trying to keep Freya from feeling sad.
Understanding her father's intentions, Freya sighed, steadied her mind, and began to consider summarizing what had happened.
The battle between the Castle Guard and the imperial soldiers had nearly wiped out Baron's private troops; in the end, only about seventy or eighty people had made it here, and among them were a few servants.
One could imagine how many of these people would choose to stay once they escaped danger.
“……”
Nodding slightly, Baron stood up after bandaging the wound and glanced warily around. Without the command of the senior officers, the remnants of the Empire were quietly retreating.
“I know, I killed my brother too! However, we must leave now; Saladin's men are already charging in. If we don’t leave soon, there will be nothing left!”
The cold tone carried a sense of pain, causing Howard Bailey's scattered gaze to suddenly sharpen. He paused for a moment and then slowly stood up with the support of a pillar.
He understood that this man in front of him valued friendship more than himself; he might be suffering even more than he was now. Yet, Baron’s expression remained calm and composed.
This kind of iron will had always been something he admired!
Seeing Howard Bailey stand up again, Baron directly ordered the Guard Member behind him to assist him.
Two thousand soldiers of the Empire seemed like a lot, but the private army nurtured by Green Castle was not to be underestimated. Both sides were engaged in fierce combat, fully aware of each other's intentions.
Even though they had been ambushed by the guards, the Empire soldiers' formidable armor and weapons still allowed them to resist. In just a short time, both sides suffered heavy losses.
However, after their senior officer was killed, without a backbone, the remaining Empire soldiers began to retreat in an orderly manner and took the opportunity to open the castle gates that had been closed.
......
Outside a hidden passage behind the castle, four Black Carriages and several warhorses stood quietly. The horses occasionally snorted, and besides Eric and his group by the carriage, several bodies of Guard Members clad in Half Armor lay on the ground.
“Young Master! Baron and Miss haven’t arrived yet. Should we…” A servant gathered his courage and trembled as he spoke to Eric.
"Mm?" The already anxious Eric coldly glanced at the servant, lightly shaking the blood-dripping sword in his hand.
"Did you not hear what I just said? I will continue to wait! If you don't want to end up like the corpse lying there!"
"...Yes!" The servant shrank back, not daring to make another sound.
He knew that just moments ago, several Guard Members had attempted to ambush Eric, trying to seize the four carriages loaded with valuables and escape. However, they were swiftly cut down by Eric and a few of the Baron’s most loyal followers.
And the previously gentle Eric seemed to have turned cold in an instant, actually picking up a sword.
This change made some who had other thoughts immediately retract their intentions.
As time passed, within the anxious gaze of Eric, a group of familiar figures appeared in the distance.
Leading the way were Baron and Freya, along with about ten others rushing towards them.
"Hurry! Get on the horses, we need to leave immediately! Saladin's men are already at the gates!" Baron’s voice carried over before they even arrived.
Understanding that time was of the essence, everyone quickly took action, and the long-awaited carriages began to move.
Catching up with the group, Baron and his companions immediately mounted the available warhorses, allowing the severely injured Howard Bailey to lie down in one of the carriages before swiftly escaping towards a hidden underground passage.
Freya rode on her horse and glanced at everyone in the light, noticing that most were present, including Eli, but the housekeeper Mary was notably absent.
Bang!
Through their conversation on the road, Freya learned about Baron's upcoming plans.
The fall of the Byron Empire was certain, and it was clear that they could not stay in this country any longer. The only place they could go was the Rudin Kingdom, where Baron's second daughter was married.
In fact, aside from Eric, Baron had always been particularly kind to Freya and his other children. Even his second daughter, who had married far away in another country, often kept in touch through letters.
Freya didn't have many memories of her sister because she had gotten married at a young age due to what was called love when Freya was still very young.
Fortunately, her sister's choice seemed to be a good one. Through Baron's occasional hints, Freya learned that her brother-in-law came from a wealthy merchant family and held a respectable position with considerable financial resources.
At that moment, they were in a large town called Dragon Harbor in the Rudin Kingdom, which was close to the sea and had trade relations with the Sea Tribe's Humanoid Races.
Freya quietly contemplated her future direction. Although she cared about her painful experiences, there was nothing she could do about them now; all she could do was look forward.
Meanwhile, the others harbored their own thoughts regarding Freya's contemplation.
Those who had witnessed Freya's skills along the way began to regard her as a leader whose status was only second to Baron, especially while Howard Bailey had not yet recovered from his serious injuries.
In this world, strength ultimately prevailed. The power of a Knight-Level Expert could almost determine any situation in front of ordinary people.
With three Knight-Level Experts present, the entire team felt an inexplicable sense of reassurance.
In the darkness, Eric occasionally wandered towards Baron and Freya. Besides pride and honor, he also felt a strong motivation to strive for improvement.
What he valued most about gradually gaining his father's recognition was actually Freya's attitude towards him.
If it weren't for Freya back then, he might still be that good-for-nothing who only knew how to have fun, or he could have died somewhere in the castle.
This complex emotion of gratitude and pride towards Freya made him unconsciously start to imitate her.
After all, he was just a thirteen-year-old boy.
For a moment, everyone in the darkness was lost in their own thoughts, and no one spoke.
In the empty secret passage, only the sound of hooves echoed.
Until two hours later, a faint light appeared in the dark passage.
This alerted the entire team.
"We're almost at the exit!" Baron whispered.
