I gasped as my body uncontrollably fell downward.
"Hold on to me!" Shen Yi's voice came from beside me as he grabbed my hand, his other hand quickly searching at his waist.
"Bang!"
A loud noise erupted from above. I looked up to see that the training ground had completely collapsed, revealing a dark, deep pit, with debris continuously falling from the edge.
"Hurry!" Shen Yi urged, forcefully swinging the rope in his hand. The metal hook at the other end caught onto the stone wall of the pit. After confirming it was secure, he pulled me up along the rope.
The bottom of the pit was at least ten meters from the surface. I climbed using both my hands and feet, but it felt increasingly difficult, my arms aching to the point of near numbness.
"Don't be afraid, hold on!" Shen Yi's voice came from above, filled with encouragement and determination.
I gritted my teeth, trying to control my trembling legs, and finally reached the edge of the pit.
Shen Yi pulled me up with one swift motion, and I collapsed onto the ground, gasping for air.
"Are you okay?" Shen Yi asked with concern as he brushed off the dust from my clothes.
"I'm fine," I shook my head, glancing back at the deep pit with lingering fear. "Good thing you reacted quickly; otherwise, we would have been buried alive."
Shen Yi smiled slightly and pointed to the bottom of the pit. "Look there."
Following his gaze, I saw that the bottom of the pit was covered in dense spikes that glinted ominously in the sunlight.
"This... this is..." I inhaled sharply, staring in terror at the sight before me.
"This is the real test that Wei Yan prepared for us," Shen Yi said solemnly. "If I'm not mistaken, there should be a hidden passage down there leading to the exit of the training ground."
As he spoke, he took a flashlight out of his backpack, switched it on, and a beam of bright light illuminated the bottom of the pit.
Sure enough, on one side of the deep pit, there was a concealed opening blocked by a large rock, which would be hard to notice without careful observation.
"It seems we can only go this way," Shen Yi said as he secured the rope to the large rock at the edge of the pit. "I'll go down first to scout the way; you wait for me up here."
"No way, it's too dangerous!" I grabbed his hand anxiously and said, "I should go down instead; you stay here to support me."
Shen Yi shook his head, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Trust me, you're not familiar with the terrain here, and you're not as strong as I am. It's safer for me to go."
Without waiting for me to respond, he slid down the rope and quickly disappeared into the darkness.
I stood at the edge of the pit, anxiously waiting, filled with unease and worry.
Time passed slowly; I could almost hear my own heartbeat, thumping loudly in my ears.
Suddenly, I felt the rope move slightly, and then Shen Yi's voice came from the opening. "I've found the exit; you can come down now."
Hearing this, I let out a sigh of relief and followed Shen Yi's instructions, grasping the rope and slowly descending.
The opening was narrow, forcing me to turn sideways and move down step by step.
"Be careful!" Shen Yi's voice called from below.
Before I could react, my foot slipped, and I lost my balance, screaming as I fell downward.
"Thud!"
I landed heavily on the hard ground, feeling as if all my bones were about to shatter.
"Are you okay?" Shen Yi's voice rang in my ears, filled with concern and urgency.
I struggled to sit up, rubbing my sore backside and replied irritably, "What do you think?"
Shen Yi saw that I was fine and let out a sigh of relief, smiling as he said, "It seems my worries were unnecessary."
I rolled my eyes at him and looked around, realizing I was in a narrow passageway, with torches lighting up the walls on either side.
"Where are we now?" I asked.
"If I'm not mistaken, this should be the tunnel leading to the training ground," Shen Yi replied, pointing to a stone door not far ahead. "The exit should be right there."
We approached the stone door, and Shen Yi pushed against it with all his might, but it didn't budge.
"It seems this door is locked from the outside," Shen Yi said as he took out some tools from his backpack and began to fiddle with them.
"I'll do it," Lu Zhanyun said as he took the tools from Shen Yi and quickly pried open the lock on the stone door. The heavy door slowly creaked open, revealing the blinding sunlight outside.
Stepping out of the passageway, I was greeted by a wide-open view of dense, lush woods, with sunlight filtering through the leaves and casting dappled spots of light on the ground.
"Finally out!" I sighed in relief and stretched my limbs.
"It seems we've successfully crossed through the trap area," Shen Yi said as he looked around to confirm it was safe. He then addressed the college students behind us, "Everyone take a moment to rest and replenish your energy."
The college students sat down in small groups on the ground, opening their backpacks to take out water and food while quietly discussing what had just happened.
"Oh my gosh, that was so thrilling! It was even more exciting than an escape room!"
"Exactly! Thank goodness for Shen Yi and Lu Zhanyun, or we would have been done for!"
"Speaking of which, why did General Wei Yan set such a dangerous test for us?"
...
"It seems we underestimated the abilities of these university students." Not far away, a soldier in armor whispered to his companion.
"Indeed, their reactions and adaptability far exceed our expectations." Another soldier nodded in agreement, "Especially that young man named Shen Yi; he seems like a natural strategist."
"Shh! Keep your voice down; don't let them hear you."
The soldiers lowered their voices, but the surprise and admiration in their eyes were hard to conceal.
"What do you think? I wasn't wrong, was I? These university students are not ordinary people." Wei Yan stood under a tall tree, watching the university students resting in the distance, a slight smile appearing at the corners of his mouth.
"The general is truly insightful; I admire you!" said the deputy commander beside him, clasping his fists. "But why does the general treat these university students so specially?"
"The Chancellor instructed me to thoroughly test their abilities and see if they truly possess the extraordinary wisdom and talent as rumored," Wei Yan replied, his gaze landing on Shen Yi, a hint of appreciation flashing in his eyes. "Moreover, I have a feeling that these university students will play an important role in the Northern Expedition war."
"Report—"
A Messenger hurriedly ran up to Wei Yan, kneeling on one knee and clasping his fists as he reported, "General, the Chancellor has heard that the university students successfully crossed the trap area and has come specifically to meet them in person."
"The Chancellor is here?" Wei Yan was slightly taken aback but then showed a hint of joy on his face. "Let's go; I will lead you to welcome the Chancellor!"
